If you create a custom envoy.yaml you can create your own Docker image with it using the following Dockerfile recipe: Build the Docker image using: $ docker build -t envoy:v1 . Assuming Envoy is configured to listen on ports 9901 and 10000, you can now start itwith:

Gimbal is a layer 7 load balancing platform built on Kubernetes, the Envoy proxy, and Contour, a Kubernetes Ingress controller. It provides a scalable, multi-team, and API-driven ingress tier capable of routing Internet traffic to multiple upstream Kubernetes clusters and traditional infrastructure technologies such as OpenStack. ENVOY PROXY ON WINDOWS CONTAINERS Envoy is an L7 proxy and communication bus designed for large modern service oriented architectures. In this blog post we will walk you through using Envoy and THE UNIVERSAL DATA PLANE API. AS I’VE SAID BEFORE, THE Thus, even at this early stage we were seeing the beginnings of a desire for a universal data plane API: a simple API that abstracts the data plane from the control plane. In the past year, multiple v1/REST management APIs have been added to Envoy. They include: USING SPIRE TO (AUTOMATICALLY) DELIVER TLS CERTIFICATES TO Hello! This is Andrew Harding from Scytale. If you are currently using Envoy to provide secure service-to-service communication, I’d like to show you how to leverage the open-source SPIRE project to dramatically improve your authentication security with automatically delivered and rotated keys and certificates based on multi-factor workload authentication. ENVOY HOT RESTART. THIS IS THE 2ND IN MY SERIES OF POSTS Envoy’s approach to hot restart is to hide as much as possible from the rest of the infrastructure and appear as a single logical process. This results in substantially easier operability. Container based hot restart was also an initial design goal USING ENVOY TO LOAD BALANCE GRPC TRAFFIC Using Envoy to Load Balance gRPC Traffic. At Bugsnag, we recently launched the Releases dashboard for tracking the health of releases. It was a large undertaking, but as we built out the backend to support it we paid particular attention to performance. One of the key areas we focused on was the latency associated with our backend servicecalls
SERVICE MESH DATA PLANE VS. CONTROL PLANE The previous tweets mention several different projects (Linkerd, NGINX, HAProxy, Envoy, and Istio) but more importantly introduce the general concepts of the service mesh data plane and the control plane. In this post I will step back and discuss what I mean by the terms data plane and control plane at a very high level and then discuss how the terms relate to the projects mentioned in the tweets.ENVOY PROXY

Role Based Access Control (RBAC) Filter. Per-Route Configuration. Statistics. Dynamic Metadata. Router. HTTP headers (consumed from downstreams) HTTP response headers consumed from upstream. HTTP request headers set on upstream calls. HTTP response headers set on downstream responses. TLS — ENVOY 1.19.0-DEV-747944 DOCUMENTATION TLS¶. Envoy supports both TLS termination in listeners as well as TLS origination when making connections to upstream clusters. Support is sufficient for Envoy to perform standard edge proxy duties for modern web services as well as to initiate connections with external services that have advanced TLS requirements (TLS1.2, SNI, etc.). ENVOY AND GRPC-WEB: A FRESH NEW ALTERNATIVE TO REST gRPC-Web is a huge win because you don’t have to create that translation layer — you just need to provide Envoy with some basic configuration.. With gRPC-Web, client calls still need to be translated into gRPC-friendly calls, but that role is now filled by Envoy, which has built-in support for gRPC-Web and serves as its default service gateway. THE UNIVERSAL DATA PLANE API. AS I’VE SAID BEFORE, THE Thus, even at this early stage we were seeing the beginnings of a desire for a universal data plane API: a simple API that abstracts the data plane from the control plane. In the past year, multiple v1/REST management APIs have been added to Envoy. They include: ANNOUNCING ALPHA SUPPORT FOR ENVOY ON WINDOWS Porting Envoy to the Windows platform has been a goal of the project since 2016 and today we are excited to announce the Alpha release of Windows-native support for Envoy. The contributor community has been hard at work bringing Envoy’s rich feature set to Windows and this is another step in line with the project’s mission of making the network “transparent” to any application ENVOY THREADING MODEL. LOW LEVEL TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION Low level technical documentation on the Envoy codebase is currently fairly sparse. To rectify that I’m planning on doing a series of blog posts about various subsystems. As this is the first post, please let me know what you think and what other topics you would like to see covered.. One of the most common technical questions I get about Envoy is a request for a low level description of the ENVOY STATS. EDIT 5/19: THIS POST IS NOT ENTIRELY… Figure 2: Individual counter/gauge stats entry in shared memory. As we already discussed in the hot restart post, ultimately, all stats are stored in shared memory so that they can be utilized from both processes. Figure 2 shows what a single stat entry looks like. It is composed of the following parts: Name: The fully resolved name of the stat. E.g., http.admin.downstream_cx_active.* Github

WHY ENVOY?
As on the ground microservice practitioners quickly realize, the majority of operational problems that arise when moving to a distributed architecture are ultimately grounded in two areas: networking and observability. It is simply an orders of magnitude larger problem to network and debug a set of intertwined distributed services versus a single monolithic application. Originally built at LYFT, Envoy is a high performance C++ distributed proxy designed for single services and applications, as well as a communication bus and “universal data plane” designed for large microservice “service mesh” architectures. Built on the learnings of solutions such as NGINX, HAProxy, hardware load balancers, and cloud load balancers, Envoy runs alongside every application and abstracts the network by providing common features in a platform-agnostic manner. When all service traffic in an infrastructure flows via an Envoy mesh, it becomes easy to visualize problem areas via consistent observability, tune overall performance, and add substrate features in a single place.FEATURES
OUT OF PROCESS ARCHITECTURE Envoy is a self contained, high performance server with a small memory footprint. It runs alongside any application language or framework. HTTP/2 AND GRPC SUPPORT Envoy has first class support for HTTP/2 and gRPC for both incoming and outgoing connections. It is a transparent HTTP/1.1 to HTTP/2proxy.
ADVANCED LOAD BALANCING Envoy supports advanced load balancing features including automatic retries, circuit breaking, global rate limiting, request shadowing, zone local load balancing, etc. APIS FOR CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT Envoy provides robust APIs for dynamically managing its configuration.OBSERVABILITY
Deep observability of L7 traffic, native support for distributed tracing, and wire-level observability of MongoDB, DynamoDB, and more. "At Lyft, we've made tremendous strides in our resilience and observability since we started deploying Envoy. We're excited to be open sourcing Envoy, and the community that's growing around Envoy will help both Lyft and others adopting a microservices architecture."
