T he East Bay produces a cornucopia of tree fruits that we love to eat, such as apples, figs, and plums. But what about our beloved avocado (Persea americana)?. Hearing reports of avocado trees growing quietly among us, I followed clues in search of these elusive trees and found them living NASTURTIUM CHIMICHURRI Story, recipes, and photos by Kristen Rasmussen de Vasquez. 1 tablespoon allspice berries. 5 cloves. Wash a half-gallon jar well with hot soapy water, rinse, and air dry. Add salt and water to jar and stir to dissolve the salt. Stab each walnut with a fork a few times to help the brine penetrate the flesh, then submerge and TATSOI WITH SPICY THAI SAUCE In a small bowl, whisk together honey, fish sauce, water, lime juice, ginger, garlic, and Thai chile until blended. Add salt and pepper to taste. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in onion and cook for 1 minute. Stir in tatsoi and cook until wilted but still bright green, about 2 to 3 minutes. BUCKWHEAT, SORGHUM, AND TEFF Oil an 8½-inch x 4½-inch loaf pan. In a large bowl, whisk together buckwheat and tapioca flours, baking powder, and salt until the mixture attains a uniform color, then set aside. In a small bowl, mix the flax meal, psyllium husks, dried apricots, and hot water until well blended, then let rest for 7 AVOCADO GROWING GUIDE Baker says that new trees should be planted on mounds 18 inches to two feet high, and six feet across, even when you have fast draining soil. She uses lots of aged manure and organic fertilizer in the planting hole, and the more mulch the better: With their shallow roots, avocados thrive in deep mulch. POMEGRANATE-JALAPEÑO JELLY 1 package powdered pectin. 4 cups sugar. Place pomegranate juice, lemon juice, and jalapeños in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the juice and return it to the saucepan; add the pectin and bring to a rolling boil. Add sugar and return to a rolling boil, then boil hard for 1 minute; remove fromheat

Although teff and injera are almost synonymous, Tefferi adds that in the hot lowlands or deserts of Ethiopia, injera is made from sorghum, a grain that plays another important role in Ethiopian culture: Its small round kernels are popped (like tiny popcorn) and eaten as a snack during traditional coffee brewing ceremonies.
