ARE U DODO?
Welcome to my scrap book. These are collections which I gather when I browse the internet. The contents are copied from the websites and blogs I visited daily and are for my reference. None of them is my own. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 2011 Dr Wong Tien Yin & Dr Chia Shi Lu (former President's scholars) who studied medicine in NUS to that list, who also served NS as M.O.s after their bachelors degree. So it's very clear that Dr Patrick Tan DID receive special treatment to study medicine in the US (which was unprecedented then) with a President's scholarship!!! ...and did not have to undergo militarytraining in MOCC!

By getting a 12 year disruption, does that not effectively shorten the actual period of Patrick Tan's reservist liability? Most Singaporeans start serving their reservist liability soon after their ORD, not when they are in their 30s. More importantly, by not serving as a Medical Officer in the army (which is a Captain's rank), but only serving as a 3SG, doesn't he get the benefit of a discharge of reservist liability at the age of 40, instead of 50 if he had been a Captain? So he would have 10 years less reservist liability than other NS men with medical degrees!Posted by hunterJet

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2011 A German banker who hit and killed a cyclist while driving was slapped with the maximum fine yesterday. He had been trying to beat a red light when the accident happened. Walter Alfred Heinz Fuchs, 43, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of causing the man's death through a negligent act. He was given a $10,000 fine and banned from driving for six years. He was originally charged with causing death by dangerous driving, which carries a jail term of up to five years. The head of Hypo Vereinsbank's treasury in Singapore admitted that he had failed to keep a proper lookout when he hit Mr Chan Ah Soo, 75, onJuly 17 last year.
In court yesterday, Fuchs, who was dressed in a suit, folded his arms just before being sentenced. Before District Judge Adrian Soon handed down the sentence, he asked the banker to put down his hands. The court heard that Fuchs was driving a rented Rover along Upper Cross Street at 10.15 pm that night. He beat the red lights and hit Mr Chan, who was riding his bicycle at the pedestrian crossing. The crossing lights were in the cyclist's favour and he was believed to be on his way to his home in York Hill, off Chin Swee Road. He was thrown off his bicycle on impact and died on the spot. Fuchs' lawyer, Senior Counsel R. Palakrishnan, said in mitigation that his client, who is married with two children, had an unblemisheddriving record.
His client, he said, came to Singapore in September 2000 to be executive director of the German bank. In February last year, he became the top man in charge of the bank's treasury as well as market and liquidity risks in Asia. Mr Palakrishnan said that Fuchs, who has been driving for 20 years, suffered trauma after the accident and was still undergoingcounselling.
HE ADDED THAT THE CYCLIST SHOULD NOT HAVE USED THE PEDESTRIAN CROSSING TO RIDE ACROSS THE FIVE-LANE ROAD, AND SO WAS WRONG TO AN EXTENT. Urging the court to impose a 'minimal fine', he said this was a case of 'momentary inattention or misjudgment'.Posted by hunterJet

SUNDAY, APRIL 3, 2011 The lack of scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs is the result of lack of financial education. Students only learn to pass exams, but do not learn how to be creative to make a lot of money and then make their money work for themselves. If the schools do not do this, then families must educate their children on their own in this matter.Posted by hunterJet

Concerned Citizen:
April 4, 2010 at 5:51 pm I witnessed one case of abuse of authority in army. I was on Friday’s guard duty and was surprised to see 2 cars of ladies approaching the gate at 2200hrs. As the sentry on shift I approached them and find out what they want. A lady came out of the car and demanded entry to the camp. She said they are here to attend a function at the officer’s mess. I told her no entry to civilian after 1800hrs. She got angry and raised her voice saying she knows MAJ XXX. I told her to wait and inform my Duty Guard Commander. My guard commander is a colleague of mine. A good regular specialist. He came out and told them the same thing I said and that lady started to abuse him verbally! Saying he will be charged if he does not allow us to enter! My guard commander ….. got really angry by this time and called up the duty officer and explained to him about the situation. Less than 10 minutes later, the duty officer and MAJ XXX drove to the guard house and escorted the ladies to the officer mess. Before they left, MAJ XXX warned my guard commander and everyone at the guard room that he will make sure we get into big trouble if we mention this to anyone. We were all so angry with this blatant violation of security! My guard commander wanted to call SIB but all of us asked him not to as alot of us NSF will be ORD in another 6 months and we do not want any trouble. The next morning at about 0400hrs. The 2 cars with the ladies left the camp. From what we heard from the mess boy, it was not unlike an orgy in the officer mess that night! The poor duty officer, who is a nice decent guy was implicated in this unsavoury incident.Posted by hunterJet

THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2011 In his plays the incredibly trenchant German playwrite Bertolt Brecht satirized the East German communists is casting them as such: "If the people let down the Communist Party, then it was up to the communist party to 'dissolve' the people and get themselves a newpeople".
This reversing of democracy is indeed a twisted idea of such a horrific and unimaginable magnitude -- which is one of the reasons Brecht is still considered a thinking-genius today. You could look on the PAP doctrine through the lens of Bertolt Brecht: The people getting too disobedient and disrespectful of the 'wonders' of 'the world's best government'? simple: Get new people.Posted by hunterJet

TUESDAY, MARCH 29, 2011 To study locally or overseas? 5 factors to consider When choosing to further their studies locally or overseas, there are factors students take into serious consideration before making their decision. Here are some of the main concerns of graduating students. 1. Cost Spending expenses surfaced as the number one factor when students decide if they should pursue their degree overseas. "I'm lucky. My parents are able to support my overseas education." - Rachel Goh, 20, University of Melbourne "It's also cheaper here. The course fees abroad and locally are more or less the same, except that overseas, you have to pay more for living expenses." - Sabrina Tan, 19, SIM - University of London 2. Proximity from family and friends Daily interaction and activities with friends and family will greatly lessen. From seeing the people closest to you every day, you are now at least a plane ride away. "I preferred studying in Australia rather than the UK or US as it is much nearer (to home)." - Charles Ma, Alumni at Monash University. "My mum didn't feel safe with me studying overseas alone" - Sabrina Tan, 19, SIM - University of London 3. Lifestyle changes "I migrated to New Zealand 10 years ago, so integrating back into the Singaporean education system would have been much too great a challenge for me." - Rachel Woon, 21, University of Auckland "Having to alter my late sleeping habits to wake up early and start the day since malls in Melbourne close at 5PM. You cannot afford to sleep most of your day away here." - Rachel Goh, 20, University of Melbo 4. Academic programmes Of course, before enrolling in any school, the choices of graduating students are greatly affected by the pedagogy in each institution. "I wanted a change in terms of exposing myself to different style of learning. Also, I wanted to challenge myself in a foreign environment." - Jan Lin, Alumni at University of Melbourne "The unique pedagogy attracted me. Classes aren't conducted in the conventional lecture-tutorial styles. SMU prides itself over its seminar-styled broad-based education and I found that extremely appealing" Zizie Zuzantie, 20, on her choice - Singapore Management University 5. Future Prospects Students will most definitely want to spend their time and money on a course of study which will aid them in the future career choices they make. "Studying at NTU as opened up opportunities for me. It has made it much easier to find a job." - Soon Qiao Ying, 22, Alumni at National Technological University "Statistically, it's a highly ranked university and highly regarded amongst employers." - Rachel Goh, 20, University of Melbourne Simple. Study overseas and start working overseas. Local talents are less appreciated that FTs. However overseas we are the FTs, living the good life, less stress, more open spaces, to ski, snowboard, rock climbing, hiking, cheaper cars n homes. Back in S'pore we'll be in debt the rest of our lives with such cost. These days when someone tells you that his child is going overseas for his Uni education, two questions cross the mind. Is he a scholar or a NUS/NTU/SMU reject? Peter Low .....yourbrain is so shallow

SUNDAY, MARCH 20, 2011 Dirty secrets of foreign recruitment unveil Last week, I approached a Job agency use by our company to source for candidates, as our HR manager had left the company, I was put in charge to look for an IT programmer, I received several suitable resume from other source, they were mainly local applicants. Then this job agency called me up, the boss was Micheal, he was very friendly, he told me of the great working relationship he had with the previous HR manager. As he carry on describing his services, he mentioned about redpackets.
you see, if our company were to employ locals which is widelyavailable,
this Job agency will not get any commission, because local will notpay
commission to the job agencies. Therefore to get the commision fromour
company and the job applicants, they have to get foreigners who aremore
willing to pay. So he was proposing to me that if I were to select his foreign candidates, I will get a cut of the commission from ourcompany and
the foreigners, and he reminded me that our previous manager alwaysworks
that way.
I thank him for his services, but i told him, that respective deptchoose the
applicants, not me.

TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 2011 Not to practice but to do research http://thinkhappiness.blogspot.com/2006/08/meeting-david-marshall-in-1994.html 1956 – ON Repressing And ILLICIT Love-Making! “Repression, Sir is a habit that grows. I am told it is like making love – it is always easier the second time! The first time there may be pangs of conscience, a sense of guilt. But once embarked on this course with constant repetition you get more and more brazen in the attack. All you have to do is to dissolve organizations and societies and banish and detain the key political workers in these societies. Then miraculously everything is tranquil on the surface. Then an intimidated press and the government-controlled radio together can regularly sing your praises, and slowly and steadily the people are made to forget the evil things that have already been done, or if these things are referred to again they’re conveniently distorted and distorted with impunity, because there will be no opposition to contradict.” – Lee as an opposition PAP member speaking to David Marshall, Singapore Legislative Assembly, Debates, 4 October 1956Posted by hunterJet

we use this concept of family cohesion to place on our youths the burden of caring for aging and ailing parents and grand-parents. The young have got their own lives to make. To carry in your own homes aging irritable ailing parents and grandparents can destroy the familylife of the young.
But then, the alternative is for the government to pour so much mountains of gold into building homes for the aged. That’s sacrilege – gold is to be gathered and not to be spent. I want to see more crèches, more homes for the aged.Posted by hunterJet

THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 2011 Published November 17, 2010 GuocoLand aims for the sky with 78-storey homes It submits highest of 6 bids for site above Tanjong Pagar MRT Station, plans $3 billion mixed-development project By KALPANA RASHIWALA MALAYSIAN tycoon Quek Leng Chan's GuocoLand is planning to build Singapore's tallest residences, up to 78 storeys high, within a $3 billion mixed-development project on a site above Tanjong Pagar MRTStation.
The $3 billion development cost includes the $1.708 billion or $1,006 per square foot per plot ratio (psf ppr) that Singapore-listed GuocoLand will pay for the 99-year leasehold plot. It placed the highest of six bids for the 'white' site, which was offered at a state tender which closed yesterday. GuocoLand is required to allocate at least 60 per cent of the maximum 1.7 million sq ft gross floor area (GFA) to offices and another 10 per cent for hotel use, under the rules for the site set by Urban Redevelopment Authority. GuocoLand Singapore managing director Trina Loh says that with a maximum height of 280 metres above mean sea level the proposed development will join Republic Plaza, UOB Plaza and OUB Centre in Raffles Place as Singapore's tallest buildings. 'Within the Tanjong Pagar area, it will be the tallest project and we'll also offer the tallest residences in the whole of Singapore,'Mrs Loh added.
The proposed development will rank alongside Republic Plaza, UOB Plaza and OUB Centre in Raffles Place as one of the tallest buildings in Singapore, all of which are 280 metres above mean sea level. The group plans to develop two towers, possibly with a mix of uses. In addition to offices, a hotel and apartments, there will also be ground-floor retail space. 'What makes this site very exciting is that it can be a truly, fully-integrated development above the MRT Station, plus the height of the project. 'And as the winner of two BCA Green Mark Platinum awards, we'll ensure this latest proposed development will also be eco friendly,' sheadded.
GuocoLand bid 11.8 per cent or about $180 million more than its closest rival. The partnership comprising Keppel Land, Hongkong Land and Cheung Kong Holdings which is developing the Marina Bay Financial Centre was the second highest bidder at yesterday's tender. It offered about $1.53 billion or $900 psf ppr. Frasers Centrepoint teamed up with Far East Organization and Japan's Sekisui House to emerge as the third highest bidder, at around $1.43 billion or $844 psf ppr. The other bidders were CapitaLand group ($777 psf ppr), Malaysia's IOI Properties Berhad ($730 psf ppr) and Lippo-unit Overseas Union Enterprise ($362 psf ppr). In addition to these six offers, URA received a submission from a tenderer that was disqualified - Wee Jong Dit. A person bearing the same name received the Public Service Medal at the 2002 National Day Awards. He is understood to be a former banker (involved in forex dealing). Typically, a bidder at a state land tender would be disqualified if he does not fulfil tender conditions, the most important of which is that the submission must be accompanied by a tender deposit (of at least 5 per cent of the bid price). GuocoLand has been on the lookout for a mega development site in Singapore for years. It was unsuccessful in its bids for the plots that have since been developed into Marina Bay Financial Centre site and Ion Orchard/Or- chard Residences. BT understands that some overseas parties are keen on teaming up with GuocoLand for the proposed Tanjong Pagar project. The group's bid was above market expectations; property consultants polled in late July when the site was launched had forecast bids of upto $1.4 billion.
However, Cushman & Wakefield Singapore vice-chairman Donald Han said yesterday that GuocoLand's bid was 'still workable'. 'Singapore Grade A office rents have been recovering nicely and investors' appetite in completed office buildings has also returned. GuocoLand may sell the Tanjong Pagar project's office portion after completion. The group has experience in developing residential and office properties. And its sister company, Thistle Hotels of UK, may get an entry to manage a Singapore hotel,' he added. CBRE Research executive director Li Hiaw Ho said: 'In order to obtain this top bid of $1,006 psf ppr, the gross development value for the 60 per cent office component is estimated at $2,200-2,300 psf. 'The mandatory 10 per cent of GFA for hotel use would translate into 330-350 rooms with each room estimated at $800,000-900,000. Based on the top bid, condo units at this mega development could possibly transact at $2,400-2,500 psf when ready for launch.Posted by hunterJet

there are lots of Singaporeans that are deemed “bright” in Singapore as they have excelled in all school curricula. More importantly, they think of themselves as bright and when they get to a Western University, they realise that they are not so bright as being bright is more than just recurgitating facts and established principles. This is where Singaporeans lose out in the West as they are good in answering but they are not good in questioning.Posted by hunterJet

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2011 Is his girlfriend's family trying to set him up? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have been with my wife for ten years and watched her 4 y/o son grow to be a young man. Now he is almost 15 y/o and popular with the ladies. He has a girlfriend and has been going cuckoo like most young men that age on a hormone roller coaster(and some older farts too LOL). Now my wife and much of her family are afraid he might have sex with this girl and her parents will start demanding money. They have seen our house and know we are not poor so $$$$ may be flashing intheir eyes.
Her mother seems to encourage them being alone often which is not normal in my opinion of something parents of a 14 y/o girl do. The girl is in my step son's class at school and last week her grandmother came to the classroom and took a photo of him. My wife says if the girl has sex with her son her mother may get the police involved and the extortion begins. We have told our son to keep it in his pants but no teenage boy could resit that opportunity. Being that Thai men seldom support step children my wife could make it clear to the girls mother that I will not contribute anything financially and the police could not force me too as I am not the boys father. Anyone have experience in this situation or thoughts on the matter. My wife and I do have a 5 y/o son together so this situation could turn ugly in 10 years when he grows up. http://teakdoor.com/living-in-thailand-forum/87298-his-girlfriends-family-trying-set-him.htmlPosted by hunterJet

The world had seen many protests and deaths and violence and US kept quiet..... Sudan Somalia Nepal & even Myanmar when monks marched. Why they will appear to be intervening is actually a very simple logic. They will pretend to be doing it when they found out that power change already become inevitable - e.g. during Suharto's fall. They do it for several purposes: 1. To create false impression that the USA was powerful that under their intervention 3rd world regimes changed hands. 2. They hurry in to buy some friendship with the new regime by doing some redundant assistance. 3. The US need to stay on the GOOD side of the books of new 3rd worldpowers.
4. When there are several possible alternative powers that could replace a falling regime, the USA will then try to see if they can help the one faction that is most friendly with Washington to gain power. But they will do that if the cost is not too high toWashington.
When change is into the hands of those hostile against USA, they will wash hands and run ASAP. USA is a lame bullshit, they will not want lose their lives and limbs and look for only very cheapo wins.....doesn't anybody?Posted by hunterJet

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2011 After carefully examining Jesus’ life and words, former Cambridge professor and skeptic, C. S. Lewis, came to a startling conclusion about him that altered the course of his life. So who is the real Jesus? Many will answer that Jesus was a great moral teacher. As we take a deeper look at the world’s most controversial person, we begin by asking: could Jesus have been merely a great moral teacher?Posted by hunterJet

At least you know they didn't use too much preservatives. Eg. humble bakery bread grows mouldy after a couple of days (ie. little preservatives). Gardenia bread grows mouldy after a week (ie. more preservatives). Sunshine bread never grows mouldy (ie. lots ofpreservatives).

Structural unemployment means those who lost their jobs are not likely to be hired again to do their previous jobs. Their previous jobs have gone away to other countries or been made obsolete by technology or been replaced by more productive labor. The only solution these jobless people have is to go for re-training and diversify into other industries. This is something they need tohelp themselves

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2011 This whole drama is to play with people's hearts...they will make you want it so badly and in the end break your hearts with promises and change. As is always happens with humanity...its going to end with a heartbreak when the new leader promises many things and give nothing...Humanity has been deceived for too long...Don't pin your hope, instead have a beer...Posted by hunterJet

It seems interior design contractors these days have more than enough work and income, so much in fact that they can pick and choose whom they decide to work for based on the size of the project. I have become completely disillusioned by some whom I tried to engage for some work at my new apartment, and three others I asked to provide some services and furniture at my place of work. For the home project, I contacted three contractors for an audio-visual console and shelving job at home and did not receive one response, despite sending drawings, measurements and budget. I wrote to them complaining about the lack of customer service and arrogance that smacks of "your job not worth it, lah". Are they doing so well that at around $3,000 to $4,000, the console job was not worth their time or effort? Well, they missed out on the chance to do a total upgrade of two bathrooms and a kitchen, had the console job beendone well.
Six weeks ago, I tried a well-known local interior designer. The website auto-responded within 15 minutes, advising that one of their consultants would contact me. I am still waiting. For my office we needed some desks, tables and chairs for a small boardroom and two offices. We contacted three providers, one promised to come back the following day for "more measurements" but we never heard from him again. The other two were keen, but had quotes for the same work that varied by almost 100 per cent. Is the industry so flush with business that smaller projects are just not worth it? This customer will certainly not be recommending four particular local businesses to friends and colleagues in the future.Posted by hunterJet

SUNDAY, JANUARY 30, 2011 I am amazed how these PRC gals are always so capable of pleasing their men verbally without the need to go to bed. It is like it's in their DNA and/or there are schools in China to train them to sweet-talk and con S'porean men. They 'lau kong' here and there, our men tak boleh tahan liao. They treat you better than the porlumpars treat their PAP masters. In a nutshell, local men aresimply mesmerised!
Slowly but surely, these gals will have family members who are sick and/or dying, house collapsing and needs renovation, siblings need further education etcetc. They only do so when they know you are already in their pockets. I know of a few friends who were innocently conned. But there are those who knowingly get conned. Not once by the same gal but several times. Others, when they discover their 'lau por' churi makan outside will find excuses for their partners' ECA.Posted by hunterJet

Singaporean men are too trusting of women and often after the first two dates, entrust bank account and money to the women instead of finding out more about their true colour. These PRC women will start asking about your salary, bank account and housing. Then, they will start talking about sick relatives while having a real husband behind the local man's back. Singaporean men need to wisen up when trusting a partner. S'porean men like to howlian to PRC gals. Maybe it is human nature. When the meimeis don't ask, our men will offer info to them - how rich they are, how much CPF money, forthcoming big biz deal etc. All these are said to merely entice the meimeis to bed. They could have paid $150 in Geylang to achieve the same objective. The pleasure is still the same when you cum. In my circle of friends, there are at least 15 with meimeis as constant companions and with the exception of two or three, the others are supporting their companions. The exceptions are smart. They pleaded guilty to their meimeis that they don't have money. From my observation, their relationship is still going strong. They started on the right note unlike many others. When courting, buy LV for meimei, dine at Thai Village, buy Rolex etc. Once meimei thought they found a 'robert', robert becomes a 'johnny pok kai'. Of course the meimei look for greener pastures elsewhere. The lesson is simple - never act rich. Act poor to test the meimei. If need be, borrow some money from her and see her reaction. Don't be a fool and don't fool her. Test the water first coz still water runsdeep.

I have learned over time that it does me absolutely no good to hold a grudge. i have a few people who have enraged me for one reason or another. The way I deal with those people is to just cut off all communication with them, and move on with my life. If they call, I ignore the phone, if they send me an e-mail, I do not respond, if I bump into them on the streets, I turn away. Just eliminating those people from my life has given me more peace. Holding on to anger will only hurt you. Chances are, these people don't give it a second thought. They are moving on with their lives. Why should you let anyone have that kind of hold on you?Posted by hunterJet

WHEN the Yan Kit pool opened in 1952, it was only the second public swimming pool here after the first on Mount Emily. Named after dentist Look Yan Kit, its official opening had then-Governor of Singapore John Nicoll and City Council president T.P.F McNeice as guests of honour. It was often packed, given its location in a densely populated area, as well as the lack of public pools at the time. But as commercial activity in the area flourished and residents moved out, the pool's decline was inevitable. By 2000, it drew an average of 100 people a day - a very low number compared to the 1,900 using the Tampines Swimming Complex at the time. The Singapore Sports Council closed it in March 2001. The council runs 24 public pools today.Posted by hunterJet

We are in the middle of a political earthquake in the Arab world and the ground has still not stopped shaking. To make predictions when events are so fluid is risky, but there is no doubt that the uprising in Egypt—however it ends—will have a dramatic impact across the region and within Palestine. If the Mubarak regime falls, and is replaced by one less tied to Israel and the United States, Israel will be a big loser. As Aluf Benn commented in the Israeli daily Haaretz, “The fading power of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s government leaves Israel in a state of strategic distress. Without Mubarak, Israel is left with almost no friends in the Middle East; last year, Israel saw its alliance with Turkey collapsePosted by hunterJet

Something tells me I could bet my life savings that her two daughters are going to “crash & burn” very soon. All kids need to rebel. Kids of strict parents massively rebel. Drugs & teen pregnancy is on the way to one Harvard Prof’s home! I do agree 100% with Summers ( above) as an engineer, I quickly noticed all the “straight -A” students were less than useless in industry. After a few years, they become little more than clerks in the engineering groups. Engineering is about solving problems that have no “academic” or “Book” solutions. Its about solving things that seem impossible with methods no one has ever even dreamed of. Straight A students just don’t have the creativity and imagination to solve real world problems..

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2011 A MALAYSIAN, who was only 19 when he became a drug mule last year, was ordered to be hanged on Friday. Yong Vui Kong was found guilty of trafficking in 47g of heroin on June 13 last year by Justice Choo Han Teck. During the two-week long trial, his lawyers had argued that Yong was unaware of the contents in the packages in his possession. They said Yong was merely following the instructions of his boss in Johor Baru to give 'presents' to people here. These were wrapped in colourful wrapping paper and Yong had been assured by his boss that he would not land in trouble. His boss had also made him promise not to open the packets. Although Yong had told police he stood to receive $2,000 for running the errand, he denied it in court, saying that he had made up the lie as the police would not believe if he had told them he was justhelping his boss.
The identity of the ringleader, who Yong said drove a Singapore-registered car, is unknown. Dismissing the defence arguments, Deputy Public Prosecutors Peter Koy and Stella Tan argued that some of the packets had their ends opened and Yong would have seen the drugs. Perhaps most damaging was the evidence of Yong's accomplice Reggie Gwee Chin Hian, 22, who testified that he had received drugs from Yong five to six occasions between May and June last year. There had also been two past instances when the drugs were not wrapped when he received them. The court heard that Yong would drive into Singapore with the drugs. Once here, he would receive an SMS message with the telephone numbers of the recipients. On his trip on June 12, Yong, an odd-job worker, asked his friend Chai Hor Hsiang, 24, to accompany him. They drove in at about 10pm and went to Yishun where Yong passed about 14g of heroin to Lim Foo Seng, 51 and received $5,000 in return. Not realising that they were being trailed by Central Narcotics Bureau officers, they then tried to drive to Meritus Mandarin Hotel inOrchard Road.
They got lost and Yong boarded a taxi with his friend following in thecar.
When arrested shortly after midnight after his delivery to Gwee. Yong looked shocked and asked for his mother. His lawyers, who were assigned by the State as Yong was unrepresented in a capital case, told the court that Yong's father passed away many years ago and his mother was very sickly. Both Gwee and Lim have been jailed for 22 years for trafficking indrugs.
Yong's friend Chai was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal as there was no evidence he knew of the drugs. Yong looked devastated when the death sentence was passed, and was seen wiping tears away as he was manacled. His case will now go before the Court of Appeal.Posted by hunterJet

The house of God has become the latest victim of the property crunch, according to a survey. Nearly 200 US churches have had their properties seized by lenders since 2008 – compared to eight in the two previous years – and more are to come. Religious leaders were just as swept up by the property boom and bust as their parishioners, according to a survey by CoStar Group. During the years of feast religious leaders took advantage of easy credit to build bigger churches and cater to bigger, richer congregations. Now the years of famine mean smaller, poorer congregations but still facing the bills for the bigger houses ofworship they built.
Foreclosure proceedings against US churches have more than tripled since 2007, when the recession took hold. All religious denominations have suffered as donations have declined. But the financial crisis has hit independent churches hardest because they lack well funded governing bodies capable of bailing them out. Last year Ebenezer AME, one of the biggest churches in the US, with a congregation of 10,000, ran into trouble with its lenders. Banks demanded the church cut expenses as it struggled to make its mortgagepayments.
An investigation by a Memphis, Tennessee, television station found hundreds of churches in the city fighting foreclosure. There are 200 churches in Atlanta alone facing foreclosure, according to Reverend Jesse Jackson, founder of civil rights organisation Rainbow/Push. Jackson said African American and Latino communities had been hit particularly hard: "It's communities not just churches that are in foreclosure. We have paid more for less, churches and their members are being dragged down by debt," he said. "The church is the centre ofour community."
Chris Macke, analyst at CoStar, said the boom in foreclosures was due to the financial squeeze on parishioners and overly aggressive projections of future income from churches. Churches had fallen victim to "recency bias," he said. "Whatever happened most recently is what will happen in perpetuity, which is ironic considering that churches deal in issues of perpetuity," hesaid.

Singaporean actress Le Xuan revealed that many actresses in the republic were asked to “sleep” with directors in exchange for better movie or drama roles, reported Sin Chew Daily, which reproduced the story from a Singaporean paper. The 30-year-old said directors would ask female actresses and modelsto “do it”.
She added that it was not a rule in the film industry but most actresses knew about it. Le Xuan also said many new artistes would sleep with directors to advance their careers.Posted by hunterJet

THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 2011 From: 2LT Li Hongyi, _____ PC, _____ Sent: Thursday, 28 June 2007 9:36 AM To: ___ ____ ____, Minister, MHQ; MG ______ ____, CDF, CDF Office; BG -___ ____ ____, COA, COAOFF; COL _______, CSO, _______; zz All in ____, _________ Cc: zz All in ________, _____; zz ALL IN ____, _____; zz All in _____, _____; zz All in ______, ______ Subject: A complaint about the quality control of SAF officersDear Sirs and alI,
I am about to disrupt my national service to pursue further studies, and this will likely be my last email sent out for the next half a decade. Unlike the common "ORD letters" that you read, this letter unfortunately cannot be as cheerful. I am using this last opportunity to issue a letter of complaint against the quality control of officers in the SAF, more specifically against LTA X. During my time as his subordinate, LTA X was AWOL on at least 2 counts, attempted bribery, and lied to his subordinates and his superior officer. The battalion HQ has effectively given no punishment, and has not even made these infractions known to the rest of the battalion. Let me first give you some background. I am the ____ ____ platoon commander from __________. In order to maintain operational readiness my duties are performed at _____ camp where our ops bus and servers are instead of at stagmont camp where our battalion is. The company isstructured like so
OC
|
Centre Head
|
PC
The duties are therefore shared between the PC's, PS', and the Centre Head. LTA X is the centre head of the __________. LTA X, was originally supposed to be on duty at _____ Camp as the duty commander for the _______ on the 20th and 22nd of April, a Friday and Sunday respectively. I was on duty on the 21st of April that Saturday, to minimize the changing over, I contacted him and asked if he would like to swap duties for the Saturday and Sunday. To this he agreed, and thus he was to be on duty on the 20th and 21st of April. On the Friday however, LTA X called to inform me that he was busy during the day, and if I could cover for him until the evening. To this I agreed to do so. At about 1600 hours, I received a call from LTA X, informing me that he was on the way and that I could leave first, thought this would result in a time where there would be no duty commander in camp, he informed me that this had already be cleared with our OC. I therefore left camp. On Sunday the 22nd of April I arrived back in camp to take over duty from LTA X. After he had left camp the men informed me that he had not arrived in camp on Friday at all, and that he only arrived in camp at 1800 hours on Saturday the 21st of April. On Saturday they had tried to contact him to ask his whereabouts, to which he told them that he was in fact in _____ in ______ camp getting some work done. The men contacted their counterparts in ______ camp to verify this, however no one in______ camp had seen LTA X. 1 further confirmed with the ______ duty personnel on Saturday that none of them had seen LTA X, this was also with confirmed with that day's BDO. This news obviously was very distressing, I confronted LTA X regarding this information to which he confirmed that he only arrived in camp on Saturday at 1800 hours, but that he was at _____ for a while then left later to run some errands. Upon learning that I was to bring this information to our OC, LTA X then made an offer to do some of my duties for me to which I declined, his words were "You know if you need me to help you do some of your duties.." On Wednesday after I had completed my personal investigation and confirmed that these events had indeed transpired, I informed our OC of these offences. Our OC spoke to LTA X regarding these issues, and let him off with a warning. I would like the story to end here, however LTA RX was again on duty at ____ Camp for _________ on the following Saturday the 28th of April. At 0030 hours on Sunday the 29th of April I received a message from the duty personnel. The duty personnel of the platoon had just spotted LTA X's car, a white Mitsubishi lancer driving out of camp. I responded by telling them to check all the car parks and look for LTA X in camp. I received a call at about 0115 hours, the duty personnel informed me that they had checked the whole camp, and that LTA X's car was no where to be found. They also informed me that LTA X was no where to be found, not in any of the bunks nor any of the offices. On Monday the 20th of April when I arrived back in ______ Camp for work, I confirmed with both the guard commander and the duty officer for Saturday the 28th of April, that at white Mitsubishi lancer had indeed driven out of camp at about 0030 hours on the 29th of April. This latest information was told to our OC. When confronted by our OC, LTA X told him that indeed it was his car driving out of camp, he claimed however, that it was not him driving the car but that he had lent it to friend to drive out of camp. After checking with the person in question this was established to be untrue. Finally, LTA X admitted that he had lied, and that is was hewho had left camp.
I have been informed that LTA X was to be given 10 extra duties, though this may be considered an extremely light punishment there is a further problem. To date, which is to say, 2 months from the incidents, none of the duties have been published in the battalion RO, in addition, LTA X has not served any of the extra duties he was supposedly awarded. In addition, this system of leniency is not consistent throughout the battalion, or even the company. The following was published in the RO on 1 1th of June 2007: SXXXXXXXX CPL _____ ________ Non-compliance with a lawful duty or order. stoppage of Leave for 7 days This was the punishment for CPL ______ for leaving camp an hour before he was supposed to. This was published less than a week after his infringement. If you were to calculate the time AWOL alone, LTA X was missing for a minimum of over 20 hours. This does not take into the account the fact that he repeated the crime less than a week after being reprimanded the first time. This does not take into account the lying to his superior officer. This does not take into account the fact that he is an officer, and thus should be even more liable thancorporal.
Absence without leave 22. -(1) Every person subject to military law who is absent without leave from service in the Singapore Armed Forces or from the place where he is lawfully required for the time being to be shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction by a subordinate military court to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years or any less punishment authorised by this Act. (2) It shall be a defence for any person charged under this section to prove that his absence was a result of circumstances over which he hadno control.
this is where the report ends and the editorial begins. LTA X's continued service in the SAF is an embarrassment the entire officer corps. In the SAF we are constantly being told that we have very high standards expected from our officers. As an officer cadet any one of these actions would have you put immediately out of course. Here you have a person who lied to his subordinates, went AWOL, attempted to bribe a civil servant, went AWOL again not even a week after being reprimanded, then lied to cover himself, and tried to implicate another person in these lies. He discarded his second chance just days after being given it because he thought he could get away with it. I how ask you what exactly are these high standard that we speak of? I am realistically asking you how much worse than this can an officer really go? Does a person have to commit armed robbery or murder before he fails these supposedly "high" standards of officers in the SAF? I simply fail to understand how someone who would undeniably fail the standards expected of a cadet or even a private can continue to be anofficer.
The decisions of the battalion HQ are equally saddening. How can a lower standard of discipline be expected of officers than of men? In the our society, when a police officer commits a crime he is held to an even higher standard, and given even greater punishment than a normal citizen, this is because he has betrayed the very values it ishis duty to uphold.
I was told that one of the reasons this was so was that they did not wish to ruin his career with a summary trial. However the SAF is not a charity organisation and does not owe anyone a career. I feel that as a regular his status as an officer and his career should be under even closer scrutiny than that of an NSF, to intentionally withhold such information is effectively tricking the SAF into continuing to pay someone whom if all is known, has no place in the organisation. Another reason told to me for LTA X's lighter punishment was that it is in light of the work he has done for the battalion, I feel this is unacceptable for several reasons. Firstly in our country we do not mitigate punishments based on past achievements, Durai was not excused despite the amount of money he helped NKF raise, and a doctor would not be excused from molestation no matter how many lives he has helped save. Secondly such mitigation is nothing more than justified corruption and no different from a criminal paying off the police to escape arrest, the very thing we fight so hard to keep out of our society, Finally even if the previous two points are conceded, what LTA X did was not a mistake, mistakes are done by accident. What he has demonstrated is a systematic failure of character and unacceptableas an officer.
Even if you attribute the lack of punishment to extreme leniency, the decision to not inform the battalion is even more suspicious. Especially in a _____ unit such as _________ where the importance of being on duty cannot be over emphasized, to not even inform the battalion of the occurrence is to send a signal that there is nothing wrong with his actions. If it was unintentional it shows gross negligence for something which is clearly an important matter, and if intentional shows a level of corruption that I need not elaborate on. While some might say this is just a small matter, a story of a single bad officer, the fact that it was not dealt with more severely is indicative of a bigger problem. It shows the lack of quality control being practiced for the leaders of the SAF. The following quote was taken from the army's own intranet homepage: "In the 3rd Generation SAF, the quality and commitment of our people will continue to be the most important determinant for advancement" - Member of Parliament Ms Indranee Rajah We can take criticism about having second hand equipment, outdated training methods, and even questionable relevance to modern day operations. But one thing that cannot be tolerated is a reputation for having bad leaders. Such a reputation would compromise Singapore's defence credibility far more than using refurbished tanks or oldtraining manuals.
While I may only be a 2nd lieutenant, I am a citizen of this country. And as a citizen I have the right to demand high standards from the leaders of the SAF While it is true that high standards are hard to come by and even harder to enforce, for such events to come to light and yet nothing be done about it is to say the very least, unacceptable and disappointing.Yours Sincerely,
2LT Li Hongyi

SUNDAY, JANUARY 16, 2011 Repression, Sir is a habit that grows. Then an intimidated press and the government-controlled radio together can regularly sing your praises, and slowly and steadily the people are made to forget the evil things that have already been done, or if these things are referred to again they’re conveniently distorted and distorted with impunity, because there will be no opposition to contradict.” – Lee Kuan Yew as an opposition PAP member speaking to David Marshall, Singapore Legislative Assembly, Debates, 4 October1956
