HISTORYTHE COURSE
The Dipsea Race. First run in 1905, the Dipsea is the oldest trail race in America. It is run every year on the second Sunday in June. The scenic 7.4 mile course from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach is considered to be one of the most beautiful courses in the world. The stairs and steep trails make it a grueling and treacherous race. THE DIPSEA RACE: THE COURSE The Dipsea Race Course. It begins in downtown Mill Valley with a sprint down Throckmorton to the Old Mill Park, then up three flights of stairs as tall as a fifty-story building, and up some more through an old horse ranch to Windy Gap. THE DIPSEA RACE: 2019 RACE SUMMARY The 2019 Dipsea. Brian Pilcher was in a big hurry in the 109th Dipsea. He had extra motivation to win the race for a dear friend and a plane to catch to go to France afterward. With a 13-minute head start, the 62-year-old retired real estate financier returned to the 7.5-mile trail race from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach for the first time since HISTORICAL INFORMATION The precise origins of the Dipsea Race are obscure and shrouded in legend. Even the root of the name "Dipsea" remains uncertain despite exhaustive research by Mark Reese and others. The first Dipsea was held on a rainy November 19, 1905. The 100th Running of the Dipsea was one for the ages. Extreme ages. It was won by 52-inch, 62-pound, 8-year-old fourth grader, Reilly Johnson of Mill Valley, who beat a 68-year-old grandmother of four, Melody-Ann Schultz of Ross, to become the youngest runner ever to win the Dipsea, topping then 9-year-old MeganMcGowan in 1991.
