Palestine. I attended a brilliant talk by Nadine Chahine, a renowned type designer and student of International Relations. The subject was the volatile situation in East Jerusalem and the escalation in violence across the region. Nadine highlighted the use of intentional language to dictate a one-sided narrative that typically casts Israelis as civilians and Palestinians as terrorists.SIMON COLLISON

31st December, 2020 / music. 2020 in music. Weird year. Despite the virus, there was an overwhelming avalanche of new music. As the pandemic tore at the fabric of life, music was the balm that helped us cope with such an awful year.SIMON COLLISON
The swifts are here! They’ve made it again, Which means the globe’s still working, the Creation’s Still waking refreshed, our summer’s Still all to come — Ted Hughes, from Swifts. The Sneinton swifts are a little late this year — 2017, 11th; 2018, 7th; 2019, 9th; 2020, 5th — but they’re here, opening the skies with their screeching and filling me with optimism.SIMON COLLISON
I’ve been looking at these old art journals for the first time in years. They were my blog, Notion, Ulysses, Pocket and Instagram before any of those things existed, and they represent a version of me that I really like. I loved Promises: Through Congress. Technically, Trevor Tweeten’s film is nothing more than a meditative zoom-out from the centre of Julie Mehretu’s Congress, soundtracked by Floating Points’ Promises. And yet, it’s so rewarding — the pleasure of listening to a painting for 46 minutes. There is logic to this pairing. Sam Shepherd would refer to Congress when composing Promises, andSIMON COLLISON

I expanded the existing colour palette and presented a number of bold typography options. In the end, we liked Whitney from Hoefler & Co. for display, and also found that it worked well enough for body copy.. Bold visual language. This project afforded plenty of opportunity to be creative with colour and graphics, and I produced lots of flexible reusable shapes and tiling patterns.SIMON COLLISON
Identity, site design, build and illustration for The Intentional Organisation, a new book and coaching practice from Sara Hicks and Mathias Meyer. This is one of the projects that Geri has helped bring to life. I think bespoke illustrations and textures can give a site so much personality, especially when the illustrator is sensitive to a responsive medium. Such a fun job.SIMON COLLISON
3rd December, 2017 / games . Outdoors, indoors . It’s an easy mistake to assume that going outside—actually out of the door—is the only way to reconnect with the natural world. A scene from Firewatch. Not everyone can do the simple things most take for granted, nor should it always be necessary to go outdoors to pacify our biophilic urges.SIMON COLLISON

Galleries and gardens. We enjoyed a much needed day out at The Hepworth Wakefield, celebrating its 10th year with the biggest show of Barbara Hepworth’s work since her death. It was so uplifting to move through galleries again and wander the beautiful garden. I love the new album from Brooklyn-based Pakistani composer Arooj Aftab. It’s sparse but intricate, with elements of jazz, classical, even reggae. Singing mainly in Urdu, Aftab’s sorrowful vocal weaves everything together, with lyrics drawing wisdom and comfort from traditional poetry. Forged in shadow but leaning into the light, there’s something magical about it. Vulture Prince bySIMON COLLISON
Beastie Boys Story is just right: two hours of funny, surprising, redemptive and moving moments with Adam Horovitz and Michael Diamond.
