Hwy 178 connects Hwy 395 to Hwy 99 in Bakersfield, by way of Hwy 14, Walker Pass, and Lake Isabella . The southern end of Canebrake Road is at Highway 178, about 9 miles west of Walker Pass, or about 25 miles east of Lake Isabella. The turnoff isn't marked with the road name, but there is a big sign for the Chimney Peak BLM wilderness area.HAIWEE PASS
This is an un-marked intersection but a road which crosses the 4-lane Hwy 395 with turn lanes is easy to find. Cross a cattle guard where a brown and white sign says Haiwee Pass Trail straight ahead, continue west-ish under the power lines (waypoint HAIPWR ) and into National Forest land. The road is rocky but suitable for any vehicle.BEAR BOX DETAILS

RED LAKE AND BIRCH LAKE The red line from BIGPIN to REDLAK is the standard route to Red Lake and Birch Lake. It took us almost an hour to drive out on the dirt road from the Red Lake trailhead in daylight and with exact knowledge of the turns, and close to twice that long to find our way up to the trailhead in the dark. Some mountain had to be #2 on the Sierra Peaks Section list to fall, and Mount Tallac was it. On the way, a relatively easy hike turned into an epic battle for life and death for my partner and me. From Curry Village (waypoint CURRYV ), go back out to the turnoff from Hwy 140 (waypoint CURRYT) and continue east on 140. Turn left at the sign for Upper and Lower Pines Campgrounds (waypoint PINEST) and park at the horse corrals (waypoint CORRAL) if you are day hiking. On foot, you can simply walk cross-country straight from CURRYV to PINEST. RED LAKE AND BIRCH LAKE The red line from BIGPIN to REDLAK is the standard route to Red Lake and Birch Lake. It took us almost an hour to drive out on the dirt road from the Red Lake trailhead in daylight and with exact knowledge of the turns, and close to twice that long to find our way up to the trailhead in the dark. SONORA PASS TRAILHEADS See Oakdale and Tracy Bypass for ways to get around towns like Tracy, Manteca, and Oakdale in bad traffic.. Sonora Pass is very steep and narrow, a good place to smoke your brakes in summer or spin out in spring and fall. It is closed in winter.
