SPRING CLEAN UP 2021 CITY OF HOUGHTON. NATURAL YARD DEBRIS & SPRING CLEAN-UP. YARD DEBRIS:. The City of Houghton allows residents of the City to drop off their yard debris (leaves, small branches and yard clippings) at our Salt Storage Building on the corner of Technical Drive and Gundlach Road from April 23 rd to November (weather permitting) seven days a week. The yard debris is separated into two areas; CITY OF HOUGHTON ASSESSOR Assessor. Assessor Scott MacInnes was appointed in 2014. The department also includes an assistant assessor, James Fedie. The assessor prepares all regular and special assessment rolls, and annually assesses the value of all taxable property in the city. The assessor can be reached at 906-483-4647 or e-mail jim.fedie@cityofhoughton.com. Access CITY OF HOUGHTON BUILDING, ZONING AND PLANNING Houghton, MI 49931. Office: 906-483-4642. Fax: 906-482-0282. Email: jeffj@cityofhoughton.com. There is no fee associated with a Zoning Permit. Zoning Application (PDF Format) A Right-of-Way permit is required for any work proposed within the public rights-of-way such as pipes or utility lines. CITY OF HOUGHTON TRANSPORTATION The Houghton Public Transit is a City operated bus system which has many different services to offer its residents and visitors. Punch cards can be purchased for $20.00 each from any transit driver or at the City of Houghton offices. Bicycles are not allowed on transitbuses.
CITY OF HOUGHTON NARA NATURE PARK Nara Nature Park is a 100 acre nature park donated to the City of Houghton by Bob and Ruth Nara. The park is located two miles east of the Michigan Tech University campus at the east end of the Houghton Waterfront Trail. COLLEGE AVENUE/TOWNSEND DRIVE PROJECT 2021-2022 The Michigan Department of Transportation will perform a reconstruction project of Townsend Drive and College Avenue during the construction seasons of 2021-2022. Their plan is to reconstruct Townsend Drive during 2021 and reconstruct College Avenue and a portion of East Montezuma Avenue in 2022. During the reconstruction project, the City of Houghton will perform some CITY OF HOUGHTON UTILITIES, TRASH AND RECYCLING Recycling. The City provides wheeled recycling containers to residents for a one-time $10 fee that will be placed on your water bill. These containers can be purchased while supplies last. In order to receive a container, please call the office at 482-1700 and request one. Special bins are NOT required for recycling. CITY OF HOUGHTON RV PARK The RV Park is located on the shore of the Portage Waterway. The park has 25 sites and is located next to the Kestner Waterfront Park. This park connects to the four mile paved, non-motorized, waterfront trail that stretches from one end of Houghton, through downtown, to theother city limit.

CITY OF HOUGHTON WATERFRONT RECREATION Houghton’s waterfront offers a lakefront recreation area second to none in the state. From the City RV Park to the Nara Nature Area residents and visitors can enjoy several parks, walking/biking trails, scenic views, gardens, public art, and historic sites along a dedicated public waterfront corridor; a portion of which runs right through downtown’s dining, entertainment, and shopping. The City of Houghton offers a 4.5 mile paved trail which runs along our beautiful waterfront. The trail, which is paved and barrier free, accommodates walkers, joggers and bikers. At one end of the trail you will find the Waterfront Recreation area and RV Park, and at the other end you will find the Nara Nature Park. CITY OF HOUGHTON FIRE DEPARTMENT History. The first fire department in Houghton was established December 12, 1861, creating the Continental Fire Co. No. 1. The first fire fighting equipment was a hand operated pumper, purchased from the S.S Smith Company for $225.00.CITY OF HOUGHTON
