GUIDE TO CHRISTIAN ICONOGRAPHY: READING IMAGES OF A Guide to Christian Iconography:Images, Symbols, and Texts. Through the centuries, Christian artists drew their inspiration from scripture, saints' lives and Bible commentaries. This website will help you understand images of saints and events from scripture by ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI: ART, ICONOGRAPHY, LEGEND St. Francis of Assisi: The Iconography. The three most important iconographical traditions related to St. Francis are illustrated at right. She was unwillingly married at 12 to an abusive husband whose life ended in murder. With some difficulty she succeeded in dissuading her two sons from avenging the crime. Then they died too, and she entered an Augustinian convent. ST. BARBARA IN ART AND ICONOGRAPHY Saint Barbara: The Iconography. In the 8th century John the Stylite composed a Syriac life of St. Barbara, apparently based on earlier works. 1 The story remained obscure until the fifteenth century, when Barbara emerged as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. In the story, Dioscorus, a wealthy pagan, keeps his daughter Barbara in a tower. ST. JAMES THE LESS IN ART In the art there has been some confusion about what a fuller's club should look like. A fuller is a person who cleanses the impurities out of wool and thickens it, in a process that originally involved beating it with a club. In many images St. James the Less holds a club that looks sufficient for such a job, as in the first picture at right. THE ANASTASIS (HARROWING OF HELL): SCHOOL OF FRA ANGELICO The Anastasis (Harrowing of Hell) 1440s Fresco Convent of San Marco, Florence, Italy This fresco appears in one of the individual friars' cells in the convent.
