About the Right To Know Act . These bills were first introduced in the City Council in 2012, as part of the Community Safety Act package. They were re-introduced in the City Council in 2014, as the Right to Know Act to help end unconstitutional searches and to increase transparency and accountability in many of the most commonly abusive police interactions that New Yorkers face. REDEFINING COMMUNITY SAFETY Redefining Community Safety Town Halls & Forums Communities United for Police Reform (CPR) members and partners are hosting a series of virtual town halls and other events called “Redefining Community Safety,” in order to engage the public and the communities most harmed by the NYPD and create a real plan for change in New York City. In the summer of 2020 Governor Cuomo signed JUSTICE FOR ERIC GARNER On September 24, 2020, six years after the killing of Eric Garner, NY Supreme Court Justice Joan A. Madden ruled in Eric Garner's family's favor in their request for a judicial inquiry.The judge ruled that a public judicial inquiry into potential violations and neglect of duty by the de Blasio administration, including former NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill, and other top police officials FAMILY OF 27-YEAR-OLD ANTONIO WILLIAMS, KILLED BY NYPD NEW YORK, NY – Today, Antonio Williams’ father, stepmother and brother – joined by elected officials and police accountability advocates – rallied in front of NYPD headquarters to protest Mayor de Blasio and the NYPD’s refusal to provide Williams’ family with full access to unedited police body camera footage of the September 29th Bronx police killing of Antonio Williams and DENVER AND MORE U.S. CITIES SUCCESSFULLY SENDING MENTAL Multiple cities across the country are building programs that involve mental health professionals, social workers, or community members responding to certain 911 emergency calls instead of police officers.
