The Cayuga Museum holds tens of thousands of objects that tell the story of Cayuga County, but we have room for only a very small percentage to be on display at any given time. The rest of the collection is kept in storage where proper protection and care are necessary to preserve objects for theTHE MEMORY PROJECT
2021 is the 85th anniversary of the Cayuga Museum of History and Art. As the oldest operating museum in Auburn and the representative of Cayuga County’s history and cultural heritage, we are using our anniversary year to reflect on how we serve our community as a spacefor your memory.
RIOTS AND RECONSTRUCTION Riots and Reconstruction. In the early 1800’s, the residents of Auburn were afraid that the prisoners would break out and wreak havoc in the village. This fear resulted in the organization in 1820 of the “Prison Guard,” known afterward as the “Auburn Guard.”. The Guard was armed and equipped by the State, and provided with an armory WORKING FOR COPPER JOHN Prisoners referred to being incarcerated at Auburn Prison as “working for Copper John.”. Copper John faces outward. To be released meant a man could look Copper John in the face. When the old administration building was razed in 1938, Copper John was taken down, repainted, and, later, placed on top of the new building.GOLF TOURNAMENT

The main goal of the Auburn System was to have the prisoners defray the costs of their incarceration through their own labor. A key factor in locating the state prison in Auburn was the availability of water power. A dam and power house on the Owasco Outlet was one of CLASSICS AT THE CARRIAGE HOUSE Classics at the Carriage House gives viewers an overview of classic and influential Hollywood Cinema from the 1940s and 1950s. This program is a collaboration between the Cayuga Museum and Cayuga Community College.
