OUR 2021 THEME
_First and foremost we adhere to all guidelines ensuring that everyone’s safety is a top priority. To that end, future events will be determined as federal, state, and the San Francisco Department of Public Health guidelines dictate, therefore scheduling and format of any 2021 event is subject to change._ Artwork: ©2020 Cece Carpio, Inbal Rubin & ThitiwatPhromratanapongse.
OUR EXISTENCE IS RESISTANCE Our bodies tell a story. Our mere presence represents our ancestors’ battles to survive and thrive under all circumstances, no matter how challenging. Although every previous generation has a story of struggle, it is those who have been marginalized in this society––the poor, undocumented, LGBTQAI+ and people of color––whose very existence is a testament to overcoming immense physical, mental and economic obstacles. We are inspired by those who have resisted in order to exist today: the indigenous peoples of the Americas, who in spite of genocide and attempts to erase their cultures, are still here to share their ancestors’ stories; the people of the African Diaspora who are a symbol of resilience and of great pride, and who to this day acknowledge their forefather’s sacrifices; the LGBTQAI+ community whose ability to shine in the face of adversity and bigotry is a true testament of their strength; and the undocumented Latinxs, who, even inside steel cages today, dream of a future where they and their children will live free. Difficult times like the COVID–19 pandemic are not new to our people. We have survived smallpox, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS, all without adequate support and resources. Yet our oral histories as well a few righteous books tell our stories of triumphs even under the mostdire circumstances.
The inequity is apparent, with Native Americans, African–Americans, and Latinxs disproportionately infected and impacted by the pandemic. Ultimately, our histories prove that we can overcome the health and economic impacts of COVID–19 if we stay strong along with the help from our families and communities. We owe it to our ancestors. Our theme for 2021 is inspired by the stories of historically marginalized people. It is a reminder that your existence matters––that your health, your livelihood, and your happiness are all a symbol of resistance and prove that in spite of obstacles we thrive. Our Existence is Resistance! COVID 19: OUR RESPONSE TO THE COMMUNITY As CANA–Carnaval San Francisco continues to respond to the challenges the escalating pandemic presents, our first priority is the health and well–being of our production team members, volunteers, comparsas, artists, vendors, exhibitors and the community–at–large. In this spirit, we are committed to supporting our community with much–needed virtual fundraising events and services such as free COVID–19 testing, resources in health, education, employment, housing, food, PPE, and other needs in a culturally–relevant manner to Latino residents who are currently hardest–hit by the Coronaviruspandemic.
CANA–Carnaval San Francisco will continue to diligently abide with all Federal, State, and San Francisco City and County COVID-19 rules and regulations around safety, and will offer our support in tandem with our generous partners and sponsors.LATEST UPDATES
