Marvellous Mechanicals Gosport Gallery, Ordnance Road, off the High Street, Gosport, PO12 1NQ 11th October – 19th December 2020 Mechanical Circus 2nd November – April 26th 2020We are delighted to tour WORKING WITH BRASS, PART 1 Spin the tool around the tubing several times. Turn the knob a little to bring the blade against the tubing, and rotate again. Repeat this until the tubing has been divided. Don’t tighten the knob much or the tubing may end up with a crimped end. If this should happen, a tapered reamer can be used to spread opening. WORKING WITH BRASS, PART 2 You can use a triangular file or a square file with one edge facing down. File a groove along the marker line starting at one edge of the bar, working to the opposite edge. You want an even 90 degree trench running from one side of the bar to the other, a little bit deeper than half the thickness of the bar.KEITH NEWSTEAD

After brief careers on a paper round in Finland and as a Graphic Designer, he became a motorcycle despatch rider in London for 10 years. During this time he also made and sold Jewellery. Peter Markey (1930-2016) studied painting at Swansea Art College and taught art for 25 years in secondary schools. He left teaching in 1980 and began making simple wooden automata after someone innocently suggested that he try making his footballer sculptures move. This is the second visit of Cabaret Mechanical Theatre automata to Explora, and there are both new artworks and old favorites included in the collection, which will tour the US as “Mechanics Alive!”. It can be used to keep the handle from being turned the wrong way or to divide the cycle of action into a series of small steps. This is one way to extend the duration of theperformance.

Musical Hell. Sharing its title with the right-hand wing of the triptych “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Bosch, this object is the first in a series of omnibus automata in which a table bearing three mechanical objects is presided over by a grey figure. The figure seems in some way responsible for the artefacts. RON FULLER - CABARET MECHANICAL THEATRE Ron Fuller was born in 1936 and went to Art Schools in Plymouth and Falmouth before studying Art and Theatre Design at the Royal College of Art. After a career in teaching he began making wooden toys for a living in 1972. He developed many techniques for producing his toys in short production runs. His WORKING WITH BRASS, PART 3 Step 2: Clean the Surfaces. Use a file, sandpaper, emery cloth, Scotch-brite pads, or steel wool to clean the surfaces to be soldered. A fiberglass scratch brush is good for cleaning hard-to-reach areas. Note that some brass is coated with a clear lacquer to keep it bright. CREATING WOODEN JOINTS FOR AUTOMATA FIGURES Creating Wooden Joints for Automata Figures Often an automaton figure without jointed arms and legs will work just fine. But, if you want to create a character pedaling a bicycle, those knees will need to bend! Over the following decade the world of Cabaret Mechanical Theatre has continued expanding. The shop has a large range of handmade automata which cannot be bought anywhere else, it also sells kits, card cut-outs and videos. EUROPEAN TOURING EXHIBITION European Touring Exhibition This is a larger exhibition with a core of 40 exhibits and was launched in February 2008 as part of PhantasieMechanik at phaeno, Wolfsburg. It will be at Museum Boerhaave until September 2011. Availability until September 2012 only. Exhibiton Floor area: from 300 sq metres. Rental Fee: 25000GBP per 3month venue.
WORKING WITH BRASS, PART 3 Step 2: Clean the Surfaces. Use a file, sandpaper, emery cloth, Scotch-brite pads, or steel wool to clean the surfaces to be soldered. A fiberglass scratch brush is good for cleaning hard-to-reach areas. Note that some brass is coated with a clear lacquer to keep it bright.FI HENSHALL
Fi Henshall. I was born in Fishguard in south west Wales in 1981. I did a sculpture degree at Falmouth College of Arts from which I graduated (not much the wiser) in 2004, and then worked for a recycling company, as a labourer on an organic farm and finally as awaitress.

After a career in teaching he began making wooden toys for a living in 1972. He developed many techniques for producing his toys in short production runs. File a groove along the marker line starting at one edge of the bar, working to the opposite edge. This is our first, very rough, test of a possible new product for experimenting with mechanisms. The pegboard idea came from The Exploratorium’s Tinkering Studio as a design intended for use with Lego.We started a non-Lego version by trying the 3-bar linkage from our book using lolly sticks, o-rings, washers, dowel, foam, etc!KEITH NEWSTEAD

WORKING WITH BRASS, PART 1 Spin the tool around the tubing several times. Turn the knob a little to bring the blade against the tubing, and rotate again. Repeat this until the tubing has been divided. Don’t tighten the knob much or the tubing may end up with a crimped end. If this should happen, a tapered reamer can be used to spread opening. Over the following decade the world of Cabaret Mechanical Theatre has continued expanding. The shop has a large range of handmade automata which cannot be bought anywhere else, it also sells kits, card cut-outs and videos. AUTOMATA TINKERING KIT Tinkering Kit with 3-bar Linkage. This is our first, very rough, test of a possible new product for experimenting with mechanisms. The pegboard idea came from The Exploratorium’s Tinkering Studio as a design intended for use with Lego.We started a non-Lego version by trying the 3-bar linkage from our book using lolly sticks, o-rings, washers, dowel, foam, etc!KEITH NEWSTEAD
Keith Newstead (1956-2020) studied at Barking College of Art and Technology. After brief careers on a paper round in Finland and as a Graphic Designer, he became a motorcycle despatch rider in London for 10 years. During this time he also made and sold Jewellery. File a groove along the marker line starting at one edge of the bar, working to the opposite edge. You want an even 90 degree trench running from one side of the bar to the other, a little bit deeper than half the thickness of the bar.FI HENSHALL
Fi Henshall. I was born in Fishguard in south west Wales in 1981. I did a sculpture degree at Falmouth College of Arts from which I graduated (not much the wiser) in 2004, and then worked for a recycling company, as a labourer on an organic farm and finally as awaitress.
