Have a question?
The Boy Scouts of America believes our organization has a social and moral responsibility to equitably compensate all victims who were abused during their time in Scouting. We also have a duty to carry out our mission for years to come. In order to meet these dual objectives, the national organization has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The BSA is using this process to help ensure that all victims of past abuse in our programs receive compensation. * We believe victims, we support them, we pay for counseling by a provider of their choice, and we encourage them to come forward. * We are heartbroken and outraged that there have been times when individuals took advantage of our programs to abuse innocent children and sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed during their time inScouting.
* Our plan is to use this Chapter 11 process to create a Trust that will provide equitable compensation to victims. * The safety of the children in our programs is the BSA’s absolutetop priority.
* That’s precisely why we’ve developed some of the strongest, expert-informed youth protection policiesfound in any
youth-serving organization. * Approximately 90% of pending and asserted abuse claims against the BSA relate to abuse that occurred more than 30 years ago. Scouting is safer now than ever before.Scouting continues.
* Scouting programs will continue to serve youth, families and local communities throughout this process and for many years to come. * Unit meetings and activities, district and council events, other Scouting adventures and countless service projects will take place asusual.
* Local councils are legally independent, separate and distinct from the national organization. * No local council assets are directly affected by the Chapter 11 filing because the local councils are not filing entities. * However, the national organization is working diligently to protect local councils’ interests through this process. * Local councils are not part of the Chapter 11 filings, but each local council will have an opportunity to contribute to the VictimsCompensation Trust.
Local councils have not filed for bankruptcy. We plan to emerge equipped to carry out our mission for many years to come. * Studies prove and parents agree that Scouting helps young people become more kind, helpful and prepared for life. * As our nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, we have an important duty to keep children safe, supported and protected while preparing them for their future. We have every intention of continuing to fulfill theseresponsibilities.
