DÖW - DOCUMENTATION CENTER OF AUSTRIAN RESISTANCE Putting up resistance to a totalitarian regime that suppresses the population by means of terror, requires a high degree of courage and willingness to risk all, even one’s life. DÖW - DOCUMENTATION CENTER OF AUSTRIAN RESISTANCE The concentration camps (Konzentrationslager / KZ) set up by the Nazis immedi-ately after attaining power in 1933 were designed to oppress by violent means and to intimidate the perceived and real opponents of National Socialism.Gradually the concentration camps were accorded new functions – as a place of mass extermination and of economic exploitation of the inmates’ labor. DÖW - DOCUMENTATION CENTER OF AUSTRIAN RESISTANCE After the first phase of deportations from the Reich and »Protectorate« to Minsk had been concluded in November 1941, 16 trains with more than 15,000 people from Vienna, Königsberg, TerezÃn/Theresienstadt and Cologne arrived in Minsk between May andOctober 1942.

DÖW - DOCUMENTATION CENTER OF AUSTRIAN RESISTANCE The situation of refugees in Italy was characterised by insecurity and the feeling of constant threat. Despite its close relations to Nazi-Germany and the country's own racial legislation, Fascist Italy played an important role as first flight destination for those expelled from Germany and Austria on account of its at first relatively liberal immigration and residency requirements. DÖW - DOCUMENTATION CENTER OF AUSTRIAN RESISTANCE The concepts of »Volk« (people) and of a conflict-free »Volksgemein-schaft« (people’s community) are central to right-wing ideology. Real conflicts of interest have to take second place behind the interests of the entire »Volk.« Evident differences are frequently explained as »natural« in the sense of the superiority of the stronger (Social Darwinism).
