AVON VALLEY RAILWAY
Opened in 1869 by the Midland Railway as a through-route between Birmingham and the South Coast the line was later linked to the iconic Somerset & Dorset Railway. Closed under the Beeching Axe of the 1960's the Avon Valley Railway was preserved by an enthusiastic group of volunteers. Today, 40 years on, three miles of track has been re-laidWHAT TO SEE
What to see. The centre of operations for the Avon Valley Railway is at Bitton, an original Victorian Midland Railway station painstakingly restored by our volunteers. We’ve tried to keep the feel of a local country station whilst providing modern facilities for our visitors. Bitton is also still retains the original goods shed, now an engine TIMETABLE - AVON VALLEY RAILWAY Saturday 22 May – Diesel. Sunday 23 May – Steam. Saturday 29 May – Diesel. Sunday 30 May – Steam –. Monday 31 May – Steam. Train Times are 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 & 15:30. Advance booking is highly recommended as some trains do sell out in advance. The Pines Express was the Manchester to Bournemouth long-distance service that ran daily through Bitton between 1910 and 1967. We offer three different experiences throughout the year, from our 2 hour steam taster, 3 hour Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) or half day diesel locomotive course, all under the expert supervision of our experienced Drivers and Firemen. This project has been made possible by a generous grant of £49,665 from Suez Communities Trust. Again, to make this grant possible Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust had to make a third-party contribution of £5,711.47. The Avon Valley Railway offers you the chance of a lifetime to realise your dream of driving a steam or diesel locomotive. We offer three different experiences throughout the year, from our 2 hour steam taster, 3 hour Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) or half day diesel locomotive course, all under the expert supervision of our experienced Drivers and Firemen. WELCOME TO THE AVON VALLEY RAILWAY Opened in 1869 by the Midland Railway as a through-route between Birmingham and the South Coast the line was later linked to the iconic Somerset & Dorset Railway. Closed under the Beeching Axe of the 1960's the Avon Valley Railway was preserved by an enthusiastic group of volunteers. Today, 40 years on, three miles of track has been re-laid, locomotives and carriages restored, and the sound of steam can once again be heard along the Avon Valley.View Timetable
