MUST SEE PERFORMING ARTS OF 2021: PART ONE As the latest outbreaks of COVID-19 have reminded us, we’re still living in the midst of a pandemic. This makes curating a list of some of the 2021’s most intriguing and promising performances something of a gamble, given that a new wave of infections could close theatres, borders and concert halls across the country in an instant at any time in the coming months. SIX ARTS ORGANISATIONS FACED WITH DEVASTATING FUNDING CUTS Six arts and cultural organisations including Australian Tapestry Workshop and Red Stitch Actors Theatre face losing $30,000 a year if Port Phillip Council’s plans go ahead, placing significant strain on already lean operations. The City of Port Phillip – encompassing Melbourne’s bayside CLAIMING ART PURCHASES ON YOUR TAX However, the fact that artworks are held to be depreciating assets by the ATO qualifies art for the instant asset write-off measure. During the 2019 financial year it is possible to claim a complete deduction of up to $30,000 for each artwork purchased by a small- or medium-sized business for their premises, subject to four criteria.
