LGBTQ+ RIGHTS ARE STILL FRAGILE By MACGUIRE BENTON • Special to www.AllOTSEGO.com This June marks 52 years since the Stonewall uprising began. We commemorate the contributions and sacrifices LGBTQ+ community members, activists and pioneers have made in the fight for civil rights. In the early hours of June 28, 1969, a series of demonstrations began in New York City as a result of a violent police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a historic gay club located in Greenwich Village. LGBTQ+ bars and nightclubs were subjected to constant raids by law enforcement agencies in the city at that time. The Stonewall uprising is recognized as the catalyst of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. FROM STATE TITLE TO COLLEGE HOOPS, LAMBERT LOOKS FOR HIS SHOT By: Kevin Limiti 06/03/2021 1:00 pm Jack Lambert defends an opponent’s guard during a Landmark Conference game in his sophomore year at University of Scranton. (Scranton University Sports Information) FROM STATE TITLE TO COLLEGE HOOPS, LAMBERT LOOKS FOR HIS SHOT By CHAD WELCH • Special to www.AllOTSEGO.com When Jack Lambert graduated from Cooperstown Central School, he was second on the boys’ basketball program’s career scoring list and as a senior had led his team to the school’s first-ever Class C state championship in boys basketball, while earning Most Outstanding Player honors after setting several state tournament scoring records. He was also named the NYSPHAA Class C Player of the Year in 2019. However, when he arrived to play for the men’s basketball team at the University of Scranton, he was just another freshman player trying to earn some playing time for a perennial Division III powerhouse. “It’s definitely a transition. I mean, I am proud of all the things I accomplished in high school, and that was awesome,” Lambert said. “But when you get to college, especially at a very competitive Division III level, it’s a whole new ballgame.” MILFORD GRADUATE HELPING WITH PANDEMIC RELIEF IN NEPAL By: Kevin Limiti 06/03/2021 1:00 pm Milford Central School graduate Zak Aldridge, center, helps deliver supplies in Nepal in this recent picture. EDUCATION COMPANY SEEKS TO FILL CAMP VOID By: Kevin Limiti 06/03/2021 1:00 pm EDUCATION COMPANY SEEKS TO FILL CAMP VOID By GREG KLEIN • Special to www.AllOTSEGO.com A local education company is planning to fill the gap in camps thissummer.
ResourceME, an Otsego County company started by Cooperstown Central School special education teacher Stephanie Nelen, will offer summercamps this year.
“The thing about this company is we want to be a source to fill a need in Cooperstown for educational enrichment, not to compete with anything we already had,” Nelen said. Nelen’s company had been working with Cooperstown Baptist Church during the height of the coronavirus pandemic to host learning pods and tutoring sessions. The church had applied for COVID money to help with educations needs during the pandemic. However, when Pastor Joseph Purdue left for a church in Connecticut, Cooperstown Deputy Mayor Cindy Falk — who is a member of the church and had helped Purdue apply for the grant — reached out to Nelen for help.
