A comprehensive list of everything we relied on and used a lot during Orion’s first 3 months of life! I know I titled this post “essentials” but a lot of this can be more accurately categorized as “nice to have” or “to make life easier for the parents” or “things we used and why they worked for us and what didn’twork.”.

Put this post together after getting many messages asking about all the dishware that repeatedly appear in my cooking stories on IG. This is about those daily plates, bowls, and glasses that have stood the test of time with us, can take the constant handling through breakfast lunch and dinner, and look great in their simplicity and versatility. DIY ROOM SPRAYS WITH PRINTABLE LABELS For the room sprays, I referred to this guide for the basic recipe as follows to approximately fill an 8oz bottle: 1/2 cup distilled water. 1/2 cup vodka or witch hazel. 20-30 drops essential oil. I tried both vodka and witch hazel hoping one would work better than the other, but they work the same, so which one to use is only a matter of your LIVING AND DINING ROOM Sponsored posts or gifted items will be fully disclosed, and any thoughts and opinions shared are always honest and my own. Some posts contain contextual affiliate links, from which I may receive a commission on sales should you use them to make a purchase. HOW TO PRINT DESIGNS ON CERAMICS Make sure you print on the correct side, then let the ink dry for 30 minutes before handling. Wrap the paper around the container to determine the needed length and cut the template to size. Spray two to three coats of acrylic spray onto the decal (will explain soon why we need to do this.) Wait until it’s completely dry before proceeding. HOW TO MAKE A BASIC IKEBANA FLORAL ARRANGEMENT Put it roughly at an angle of 20 degrees in any direction (I chose slightly leaning back and to the left). In general, you want to insert everything at some sort of angle since that’s how it is in nature. Nothing should be perfectly straight up and down. The second stem is the object, which should measure about 1/3 the length of the subject. DIY MINI FLOWER BOUQUETS Bunch a few of your flowers together, cut them down to desired mini length, and tie them all together with a rubber band or floral tape. Cut a square piece of tissue paper and place the mini bouquet at one corner of the tissue paper. Wrap the left side of the paper over to the right, the bottom portion up over that, and the right side over ontop.
HOW TO COVER BOXES WITH CONTACT PAPER Peel the backing off the paper and lay it face down. Press the top of the lid onto the center of the adhesive, making sure the corners of the lid line up with the inner corners of the paper. Fold the sides of adhesive with the tabs straight up and smooth it over to stick firmly onto the side of the lid, then fold the tabs over each corner.HOMEY OH MY

DIY MODERN FALL WREATH It’s the best time of the year for many reasons, my favorite being that I love decorating for fall in a way that brings in more natural textures and foliage. A wreath is a beautifully simple way to do this, and I took a modern approach by adding in wood beads and doing something different from the traditional round shape. OUR WHITE OAK ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORS A thousand samples later, we landed on these wide plank white oak engineered hardwood floors in the Lago Como style from Monarch Plank, who I reached out to for partnering on this project along with Finishing Touch Floors since I was drawn to many of the options in their modern selection of floors. DIY CLAY BOWL
Use both hands to roll the clay into an orange sized ball. Press your thumb into the center of the ball and pinch the clay while rotating it with the other hand. Start near the bottom then work your way up with the pinching as you rotate. Pinch in a more upward pulling motion for added height to the bowl. Use a clay rib to smooth out the inside DIY SMALL ROPE BASKET When you reach the top (mine is about 4.75″ tall) create a handle on each side like so by only gluing down the edge of each handle to the top. Reinforce the handles by coiling around and gluing the rope one more time on top. Cut off the excess rope leaving about an inch at the end. Glue the end of the rope down onto the inside of the basket DIY DOUBLE RING WALL HANGING Wrap the string around the rings down one side, then down to the other side, then come back to the center before double knotting the string in place with the knot facing the back. Apply a couple drops of glue to the knot to secure it. A gel formula works best since it soaks right into the string. Tie long pieces of yarn around the 3 inch ring GALLERY WALL UPDATE: A TV THAT MATCHES OUR DECOR Gallery Wall Update: A TV That Matches Our Decor. This is by far the most exciting thing to ever happen to our space, solving a problem that I know every design-conscious home has mourned over, and that is how to hide and minimize that big eye sore of a TV. While that black screen at least fit in with the colors of our monochrome home, it felt DIY ROTATING UTENSIL CADDY Next, I glued on the lazy susan to the bottom of the wood, then glued a 3in square piece of wood to the bottom part of the lazy susan to provide an even base for the caddy. There are holes for drilling in screws, but if I have a choice between drilling and gluing, I always go with gluing if the connecting surfaces aren’t going to endure AN UPDATE ON THE HOUSE PART TWO: WHY ADDING NEW DOORS TO It all started because we discovered that one of the bedroom doors had a fist-sized hole on one side. We could have just replaced that door, but we wouldn’t have wanted to pick that same style one since we weren’t into it, and then having one door different from the rest of the ones in the house seemed silly so we might as well just change all of them to what we want.HOMEY OH MY

DIY FLORAL MONOGRAM
If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen that I recently got this *gorgeous* floral fabric that I wasn’t sure about how to use. I mentioned I’d probably be making a pillow cover with it, and I will (because how can my pillow-cover-obsessed-self not) but I also wanted to do something with it in a way where I could just look at it.. Seriously, I think I would have been ok with just 6 ESSENTIALS FOR A FUNCTIONAL ENTRYWAY Way more comfortable putting shoes on this way. 4| Rug – Not only is a rug essential for me to wipe my shoes on and for picking up debris, it also does a really good job of delineating the space, almost like putting a sign on it saying “hey, this is an entryway.”. In general, you want to insert everything at some sort of angle since that’s how it is in nature. Nothing should be perfectly straight up and down. DIY CANDLE HOLDERS
The votive and candlestick holders were all dollar store purchases, as well as the candles themselves. The only other thing you need is a glue gun. Apply the glue to the rim of the candlestick holder and place the votive candle holder on top. Do this quickly (and carefully) since the glue sets very fast. *Side note: How sweet is my mini greenDIY CLAY BOWL
Use both hands to roll the clay into an orange sized ball. Press your thumb into the center of the ball and pinch the clay while rotating it with the other hand. Start near the bottom then work your way up with the pinching as you rotate. Pinch in a more upward pulling motion for added height to the bowl. Use a clay rib to smooth out the inside DIY MARBLED EASTER EGGS- FOOD SAFE! wood stick or toothpick. gloves. paper towels. Soak the hard-boiled eggs in vinegar for about 5 minutes. This will help the dye set better on the eggs. Once taken out, wipe each one dry. Spread a 1 inch layer of Cool Whip onto a tray. I used about 1.5 containers of Cool Whip. Wrap the paper over the flowers from the left side, then fold up the paper from the bottom, and lastly fold the paper over from the right and wrap it around the entire bundle. For the loop tie, I cut a thin strip of that burlap and used it like DIY COPPER TIN CAN PLANTERS AND CHALKBOARD TAGS First draw a small circle on each tag where you want the holes to be and then cut them out with your knife using more of a poking motion.
Squeeze a few drops of food dye onto the Cool Whip.DIY MARBLED SOAP
Reheat if necessary. Placing the dividers in the mold, start pouring in the soap one color at a time. Since there isn’t anything holding the divider in place, hold it by hand as you pour, though it’s not a problem at all if it moves or the soap leaks past it. Work quickly to get the rest of the soap poured in. 3 EASY WAYS TO WRAP FLOWERS Paper Wrap with Loop Tie. Cut a rectangular piece of kraft paper and place the flowers at one corner. Keep poking around the circle until the hole is created. Your tags should look something like this. DIY CANDLE HOLDERS
The votive and candlestick holders were all dollar store purchases, as well as the candles themselves. The only other thing you need is a glue gun. Apply the glue to the rim of the candlestick holder and place the votive candle holder on top. DIY Home and Design. Admittedly summer is not my favorite season. In comparison to fall and winter holding the best holidays and spring gifting me with my favorite weather, summer doesn’t receive the most excitement probably because I dread living through the heat with AC HOW TO COVER BOXES WITH CONTACT PAPER I believe in two things: 1) beautiful storage is exciting and 2) a good, sturdy box should never be tossed. I was reminded of this after receiving a couple gifts this past Christmas that came in some nice boxes, and I was almost more excited about how I was going to re-use the boxes for storage. DIY MARBLED EASTER EGGS- FOOD SAFE! It only took me two dozen eggs to figure out this year’s Easter egg DIY, a big improvement from last year’s three dozen eggs, but the fact still remains that this time of year means lots of egg salad around here (I will never do anything to an egg that makes itinedible!)

DIY CLAY BOWL
I learned about pinch pots in pottery class, which are an easy way to make clay bowls in the sense that they don’t require a lot of skill or materials, but to bring this craft home where most of us don’t have a kiln, air dry clay is the best option though it can be finicky. WE’RE GROWING OUR FAMILY! The first time I took the pregnancy test in early February, it came up “Not Pregnant” and I genuinely thought to myself hmm, that’s not right. This was different. I re-read the instructions on how to take the test and oops there it was, I messed up. I opted to go with the cup of urine sample method but missed the detail about how large my sample needed to be. The test also advised that if you’re testing early, it should be done first thing in the morning, not late in the afternoon like I had done. I did more research online for the test and it was recommended that if you still think you’re pregnant after a negative result, test again in 3 days…Read More

OUR BACKYARD INSPIRATION The difference between this post and posts from prior years about backyard inspiration is that now we actually have a backyard that we want to design and this is a sort of rough and preliminary mood board of our vision for it, including the house exterior!! Originally we wanted to start working on it this Spring and have at least a first phase done by the end of this summer, which is now looking like that timeline is not going to happen because of the pandemic. Still, I’m sitting at home daydreaming about the “one day” and spending some of this time planning for things like our finished backyard. So in a way, it feels like this is all too soon to share, but that’s all this is: a rough cut rambling on our initial thoughts on things we’d like to do for our backyard and exterior.Read More

BEST AND EASY FRENCH TOAST It could be because we rarely eat French toast and when we do, it’ll be a special treat yourself moment at a brunch spot and we eat it while thinking yea it’s good it’s French toast, and then never think about it again until the next menu has it and we’re so tempted to order it because we almost can’t remember what it tastes like and need a refresher. Then we made it at home recently and for the first time ever thought oh my God THIS is French toast. Was it that we’d never had it this fresh before? Was it the brioche? Is it because we’re in isolation and miss everything that once felt effortlessly accessible? How could it be this easy? I don’t use this word lightly, so I really mean it when I say this is the _best_ French toast we’ve ever had.Read More

SKILLET BIBIMBAP
A classic Korean rice dish that I love and wasn’t planning to post on the blog until I shared it on IG stories a couple days ago and my DMs blew up from everyone asking for the recipe. Stories is where I’ve been sharing our quarantine cooking adventures since it’s quick and off the cuff, plus video is always the best way to convey all the elements and techniques that go into a dish. So if you want to get a better idea of how this recipe is made, check it out towards the end of my “Recipes” highlights since I wasn’t at all prepared for taking enough photos to portray it all in a blog post ha.Read More

MARCH FAVORITES
I know last month was challenging regarding the state of our world fighting against Covid-19. I’m sure we’ve spent enough time worrying about the repercussions of this mess, and while I don’t want to come across as flippant, I also know that we need some more positivity, things to look forward to, and ideas on how to spend all this extra time at home. I will do my best continuing with what I regularly do but with some necessary adjustments due to how some original plans are on hold until this storm passes and how it’s impossible not to acknowledge how much life has changed recently, starting with this quarantine edition of monthly favorites that has a heavy focus on recipes to make and things to do, and some other stuff. Let’s have some fun at home!Read More
