Byte Sized bits of History. AD 81 September 13 – On this day Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus died of fever. Titus was the eldest son of Vespasian, who famously took the principate for himself at the end of the year of four emperors, and elder brother to theinfamous Domitian.
1218 – THE FIFTH CRUSADE LEAVES ACRE FOR EGYPT – HISTORY BYTEZ 24 May The Fifth Crusade (1213–1221) was an attempt by Western Europeans to reacquire Jerusalem and the rest of the Holy Land by first conquering the powerful Ayyubid state in Egypt. Pope Innocent III and his successor Pope Honorius III organized crusading armies led by King Andrew II of Hungary and Leopold VI, Duke of 1915 – THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE BEGINS – HISTORY BYTEZ 24 April The Armenian Genocide was the Ottoman government's systematic extermination of its minority Armenian subjects inside their historic homeland, which lies within the present-day Republic of Turkey. The number of victims is estimated at between 800,000 and 1.5 million. She was the second grand-daughter of Rome's first emperor Augustus, the daughter of Augustus'close friend the famous general Marcus Agrippa, 1911 – A GUN BATTLE IN THE EAST END OF LONDON LEFT TWO 3 January. The Siege of Sidney Street, popularly known as the “Battle of Stepney“, was a notorious gunfight in London’s East End on this day in 1911.Preceded by the Houndsditch murders in December 1910 where three police officers and one gang member were shot dead, it ended with the deaths of two members of a politically motivated gang of burglars and international anarchists 2003 – INVASION OF IRAQ – HISTORY BYTEZ 20 March. The 2003 invasion of Iraq lasted from 20 March to 1 May 2003 and signalled the start of the Iraq War, which was dubbed Operation Iraqi Freedom by the United States (prior to 19 March, the mission in Iraq was called Operation Enduring Freedom, a carry over from the War in Afghanistan). The invasion consisted of 21 days of major combat operations, in which a combined force of troops 1997 – HEAVEN’S GATE MASS SUICIDES – HISTORY BYTEZ 26 March. They have found an almost complete Roman Lorica Segmentata dated to approximately the time of the battle (3AD). During the excavation activity at the Kalkriese park archaeologists came across an area with an unusually high concentration of finds. 1839 – HUMEN, CHINA – HISTORY BYTEZ 3 June Lin Tse-hsü destroys 1.2 million kg of opium confiscated from British merchants, providing Britain with a casus belli to open hostilities, resulting in the First Opium War. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the demand for Chinese goods (particularly silk, porcelain, and tea) in the European market created a trade imbalance because the 1968 – BATTLE OF KARAMEH IN JORDAN – HISTORY BYTEZ 21 March. The Battle of Karameh was a 15-hour military engagement between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and combined forces of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF) in the Jordanian town of Karameh on this day in 1968, during the War of Attrition. It was planned by Israel as two concurrent raids on PLO camps, one in Karameh and one in AD 70 – TITUS BREACHES SECOND WALL OF JERUSALEM – HISTORY 30 May - On this day Titus and his Roman legions breached the Second Wall of Jerusalem. The siege had begun in February of AD 70 and didn't finish until September of the same year. LUCIA’S FLOOD: THE ZUIDERZEE SEA WALL IN THE 14 December St. Lucia's flood was a storm tide that affected the Netherlands and Northern Germany on this day in 1287 (the day after St. Lucia Day) when a dike broke during a storm, killing approximately 50,000 to 80,000 people in the sixth largest flood in recorded history.
