To guide the development of OSH, policymakers and companies can learn from the success of open source software and from the criticism of overly dominant web platforms. A few years ago, we also started giving trainings for other researchers on how to approach the blackbox “societal impact”. Our experience is that few researchers really know whether and how their research can have a societal impact. PROF. DR. AI REFLECTIONS IN 2020 Nature Machine Intelligence invited authors of selected Comments and Perspectives published in Nature Machine Intelligence in the latter half of 2019 and first half of 2020 to describe how their topic has developed, what their thoughts are about the challenges of 2020, and what they look forward to in 2021. DIVERSITY IN NEWS RECOMMENDER SYSTEMS News diversity in the media has for a long time been a foundational and uncontested basis for ensuring that the communicative needs of individuals and society at large are met. Today, people increasingly rely on online content and recommender systems to consume information challenging the traditional concept of news diversity. In addition, the very concept of diversity, which differs between TOWARD A STRONGER THEORETICAL GROUNDING OF COMPUTATIONAL Computational communication science (CCS) is embraced by many as a fruitful methodological approach to studying communication in the digital era. However, theoretical advances have not been considered equally important in CCS. Specifically, we observe an emphasis on mid-range and micro theories that misses a larger discussion on how macro-theoretical frameworks can serve CCS REFINING THE CONCEPT OF THE RIGHT TO DATA PROTECTION IN There may be no other fundamental right of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights (ECFR) that raises more questions on the precise object and concept of protection than the right to data protection in Article 8 ECFR. The ambiguous object and concept of protection of Article 8 ECFR leads to several significant problems on both the level of fundamental rights and ordinary law, such as the EU FUTURE IMAGINARIES IN THE MAKING AND GOVERNING OF DIGITAL Visions of the future are omnipresent in current debates about the digital transformation. This introductory article and the full special issue are concerned with the function, power, and performativity of future visions and how they relate to the making and governing of digital technology. Revisiting existing concepts, we particularly discuss and advance the concept of sociotechnical imaginaries.
