Founded in 1967, the Heard consists of a 289 acre wildlife sanctuary and a natural science museum for the primary purpose of educating children about nature. The Heard exists to bring nature and people together to discover, enjoy, experience, restore, and preserve our priceless environment. In keeping with Miss Heard’s vision, the Heard’s mission is threefold: education, conservation, and TICKETS – HEARD MUSEUM Heard general admission provides access to our permanent and seasonal exhibits, gardens, our nature trails and more. With 289 acres, the possibilities for fun with nature are infinite! Bring the family, have a picnic at one of our tables, and make a day of it. Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary offers guided trails, workshops, and service projects that are appropriate for all types of groups with an interest in exploring the outdoors, including Cub Scouts, Webelos, Brownies, Junior Girl Scouts, Campfire, Bluebirds, and YMCA Guides. NATIVE TEXAS BUTTERFLY HOUSE & GARDEN The butterfly house includes native species, which vary by season and what is available from suppliers. Our butterfly garden is filled with host plants that naturally attract these lovely creatures.You may even find a few ideas to try in your own garden! This area is also a great setting for nature photography and portraiture (small fee applies).DINOSAURS LIVE!
Life-size Animatronic Dinosaurs exhibit. The exhibit always gives families and friends a fun, educational activity to enjoy together. See the dinosaurs move and hear them roar! Photo op and play area dinosaurs will be available as well. This year, the exhibit also features an outdoor fossil dig. ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS TRAIL Animal Encounters Trail is an exhibit that emphasizes the importance of animals in nature. The Heard will close at 3 pm on the day before Thanksgiving (November 25). Guests will not be granted entry after 2 pm. The Heard will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Learn more about our schedule here.

We are currently working on replacing the entire Wood Duck trail boardwalk. We will do our best to make this trail passable during the weekends. Please note that to keep the project timeline as brief as possible, this portion of the trail will be routinely rerouted on weekdays until the completion.
