READING AVOCADO LEAVES These leaves on a Reed avocado tree are farther along in the aging process. They will drop any day now. This is their natural end. So . . . from red to lime green, to forest green, to yellow: that’s the colorful cycle of life for an avocado leaf. Here’s video of avocado trees in my yard in May of 2021, showing leaves in all natural stages: GROWING CORN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA The typical planting advice is that you make a minimum of four rows. In other words, make a patch, a block of corn plants. But that amount of space might be hard to come by. No matter, this is good advice, and the reason for it is related to how corn is pollinated, that is, how the kernels of corn on a cob are able to grow. AVOCADO ROOTSTOCKS: WHAT DO THEY MATTER? Rootstocks are mysterious. They do their work hidden, underground. Yet, their influence on the trees above ground is real and measurable. For example, some rootstocks have demonstrated that they can induce the tops to make more than twice as much fruit compared to otherrootstocks.
THE BACON AVOCADO TREE: A PROFILE Fruit description. A Bacon avocado has green skin with bright yellow dots, and the bottom end often has a dark spot, but the skin doesn’t change color overall as it ripens. The shape of the fruit is oval, similar to a giant egg. And Bacon avocados are bigger, HOW FAR APART TO PLANT AVOCADO TREES This is a Reed avocado tree that is seven years old and was planted about 11 feet from the fence. I can still easily walk between the fence and the tree, and I WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF AVOCADO TO GROW? Three trees: Fuerte with Reed and Hass. If I had the space for three avocado trees, I would add a Fuerte to the mix. Although I enjoy the diversity of tastes in most all avocado varieties, there’s something about Fuerte fruits that hit the target for me. THE LAMB/HASS AVOCADO TREE: A PROFILE The most important consideration is how the fruit eats. Lamb makes for very good eating. On the tree, the Lamb fruit has green skin until it’s mature, usually around May, when the skin turns black. It has a pear shape, often with a more blocky top than other avocados, such asHass.
HOW LONG TO RUN DRIP IRRIGATION ON VEGETABLES My short answer is: Start with 45 minutes, observe, and adjust. But there are a lot of variables, which is why observing and adjusting is necessary. Of the many factors that affect how long you should run a drip irrigation system on vegetables, one is the output of the emitters, which usually range in volume from 0.5 gallons per hour up to 4 gallons per hour. SETTING UP MICRO-SPRINKLERS UNDER FRUIT TREES Why water fruit trees with micro-sprinklers? If you’re wondering why one would choose to water fruit trees with micro-sprinklers in the first place, very briefly, the advantages compared to drip include being easier to adjust as trees grow bigger, and that there’s a larger wetting pattern so trees are more resilient in heat or drought. THE REED AVOCADO TREE: A PROFILE The Reed avocado variety is the first I ever grew. It is a great beginner’s avocado tree because it is relatively tough and productive. In addition, the fruit itself stands among the finest tasting avocados so it deserves consideration for planting by the first-time grower and the avocado aficionado. GROWING VEGETABLES UNDER FRUIT TREES Consider light needs. So you must coordinate the water needs of the vegetable plant (or melon vine, etc.) and the fruit tree. Also, you must coordinate the light needs of the two. The garlic, for example, must be planted under the south side of a citrus tree. It is growingthrough the winter.
PAINTING THE TRUNKS OF FRUIT TREES Paint all the way down to the soil and all the way up to the lowest limbs on the south side of the trunk. It is the south-facing side of the trunk that usually gets sunburned although it can also happen to the east and west sides, depending on what is around the tree. So I always paint all sides except the north just to be safe. PROTECTING AVOCADO TREES FROM HEAT Mulching or growing companion plants. Avocado roots like to grow right at the surface of the soil if they can. If it’s hot there, they can’t. Mulch keeps that level of the soil comfortably cool and hospitable to avocado roots. The more roots a tree has, the WHITE POWDER ON AVOCADO BRANCHES Faber is a University of California farm advisor for Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. He gave an overview of six stresses, or pests or diseases, that will cause some form of white powder to appear on avocado trees. If you’ve got white powder appearing on your avocado tree’s branches or trunk, and you don’t think it’s related to a USING WOOD CHIPS AS MULCH FOR FRUIT TREES Hi Johnny, Mulch is still beneficial for large mature avocado trees. It’s true that if they’re healthy and cared for properly, then they’ll have a “self-mulch” of leaf litter under them, but it is still beneficial to add some coarse material like wood chips everyonce in a while.
WHY ARE MY ORANGES SPLITTING? Split usually starts at navel. Usually the cracking begins at the navel, the bottom of the orange, which seems to be because that navel is a weak point in the rind. It’s like a natural scratch in the rind that is the first spot to tear open under pressure. Split starting atnavel.
BEWARE OF ROOTSTOCK SUCKERS ON CITRUS TREES Beware of branches below the graft union. Beware: If a branch emerges on the trunk from below the graft union, then it is rootstock — often called a rootstock sucker — and it will be vigorous and it will take over the whole tree if you don’t stop it.
