MY TOP FIVE TABLETOP GAME MECHANICS After a certain point, a bad roll inevitably means certain death for your teammate AND a loss of whatever was riding on the duel. A win, though, can result in collective sighs of relief and cheers from the whole table. 1. Momentum: Chronicles of Ramlar. Alright, this one is a NOSFERATU: AN HIDDEN HORROR GEM Nosferatu was a lot like Castlevania in its core concept: a lone hero fighting his way through a Vampire’s castle, battling horrific monsters along the way, but unlike Castlevania’s fast-paced action platforming approach Nosferatu played like one of the classic Prince of Persia games, with a hero who moves and jumps much more like a real person than a video game character. WHY PERFORMANCE MATTERS: A CONSUMER’S TAKE ON THE SAG If you follow the game industry then you’re probably at least passingly familiar with the SAG-AFTRA video game strike that’s going on. If you’re not, though, I’ll do my best to summarize it: SAG-AFTRA, a union of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, is the union that represents performance talent in video games. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FINAL FANTASY VII It brought RPGs to the mainstream. Before the Playstation era, RPGs were an extremely niche market. Sure, there were those of us with old PCs who had gotten into the Wizardry series or The Bard’s Tale. Some of us discovered the Final Fantasy series early and an even smaller percentage of us discovered Earthbound, but the closest the mainstream really got to RPGs was the Zelda series.THE GAME DETECTIVE
