A QUICK LOOK AT THE NEVERS (2021) A Quick Look at The Nevers (2021) By Trystan L. Bass on May 11, 2021 in Nineteenth Century, Sci-Fi & Fantasy. 9. I haven’t watched all the episodes of The Nevers (2021), currently playing on HBO, and a dozen will air in the first season. But I’ve gotten a good taste, plus there’s been some interesting press about the show and thecostumes.

Her website, Démodé Couture, is one of the most well-known online resources for historical costumers. In the summer of 2014, she published a book on 18th century wig and hair styling.Kendra is a librarian at a university, specializing in historyand fashion.
TOP FIVE HISTORICAL MOVIES FOR THOSE WHO SEW The Time in Between (2013-14). El Tiempo Entre Costuras is a Spanish TV miniseries about a dressmaker who lives during the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s. Through various trials and tribulations that I don’t want to spoil, she ends up in Morocco making dresses for the Nazi elite’s wives while also spying for the British. DOWNTON ABBEY WEDDING OUTFITS, RANKED 7) Daisy’s Wedding Outfit. This was an awfully sweet look — in fact, it’s the first time we really see Daisy dressed up. In later seasons, she gets some sharp 1920s dresses, and this simple floral blouse and skirt worn with a curled hairstyle is a hint of how niceshe can look.

WOLF HALL – A LOOK AT THE GENTRY WOMEN The hardest thing, in my opinion, is not making flashy upper-class costumes. It’s making believable “everyday people” costumes. While we here at Frock Flicks might quibble here and there about Anne’s wrinkly bodice (let it go, people) or the weird French hoods on the court ladies (sigh), we pretty much unanimously agree that Wolf Hall (2015) nailed the gentry costumes beautifully. WILDE WEDNESDAY: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST Cecily’s Costumes in The Importance of Being Earnest. Cecily (Reese Witherspoon) is the young ward of Jack. She spends her days fantasizing about being rescued from her idle country life by a knight in shining armor, so when Algy shows up under the guise of “Earnest,” Jack’s fictitious wayward brother, Cecily is all over that like white on rice. To accompany our podcast for the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons, we’d like to share some of our favorite costumes from the movie. CATHERINE THE GREAT (2019): WHAT’S RIGHT IN THE COSTUMES Now that the trauma of watching Catherine the Great (2019) is over, and I’ve recovered a bit, I thought it might be helpful to do a final post that analyzes the costumes more in depth than what I was able to do in the recap posts (too busy being exasperated at the plot and wondering WTF Catherine saw in that manbaby Potemkin). ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL (2020-) SATISFIES The new All Creatures Great and Small (2020-) doesn’t tread new ground. It looks and feels in many places like a shiny HD remake of the 1970s version (which I adore, of course!), at least judging by the first couple episodes. The storyline is obviously the same since both series are taken from the books, but the story beats and pacing are very similar as well, which I noticed strongly since FRIVOLOUS FRIDAY: THE MUMMY (1999) I recently re-watched The Mummy (1999) and felt it deserved a little Friday post. The Mummy was a reimagining of the classic 1932 film of the same name, starring Boris Karloff.Basically, it modernized the original story, adding cutting-edge computer graphics and a cast almost entirely of some of the most beautiful people ever to appear in the same film together. Shaw is a supporting character, since this movie is about Thomas More, but the interplay between Henry and More is critical to understanding the plot of A Man for All Seasons. This Henry is the classic capricious bully, but that builds upon a clear friendship between these two men.MCM: ROBERT TAYLOR
He didn’t intend to become an actor, but his good looks made it nigh impossible to resist getting an MGM contract in the 1930s. And Robert Taylor stuck with MGM through the 1950s, starring in many a frock flick as dashing soldiers, rugged cowboys, and valiant knights.DRUNK HISTORY
