I planted tiger flower (_Tigridia pavonia_ ) this year for the first time. Although it is not hardy in my Kentucky garden I plan to grow it as an annual - the flowers are spectacular and appear during the dog days of summer. I like Mexican shell flower (another of its common names) so much that I'm going to lift and overwinter the bulbs indoors and buy additional bulbs! Read the tiger flower profile We enjoy summertime flowers from these of tiger flower's close relatives also have summer time flowers: montbretia (_Crocosmia X crocosmiiflora_) African iris (_Dietes bicolor_) gladolius (_Gladiolus_ spp.) fortnight lily (_Dietes iridioides_)NEW PROFILE

Burro's tail (_Sedum morganianum_ ) is a ground-huggin tender perennial with fleshy leaves. Besides making a great hanging basket, burro’s tail (where hardy in Zones 9-12) can be used in rock gardens, as edging in the front of a low border, or as a ground cover. Read the burro's tail profile » . Like the burro's tail, these plants are also easily grown inddors and are great choices fornovice gardeners:

Indian shot (_Canna indica_ ) is a parent of many of the showy hybrid cannas (_Canna_ x _generalis_ ) that we enjoy in our gardens every summer. Click here » to read more about this large perennial that is grown (and naturalized in places) in USDA Zones 8-11. In colder Zones Indian shot is lifted in fall and overwintered indoors. The podocarpus (_Podocarpus macrophylla_ ) shrubs are often loaded with colorful fruits at this time of year. A couple of people have written to say that these juicy fruits are edible. I don't know, they may be - but I'm not going to eat them and I haven't ever observed birds eating them so you probably shouldn't either - just to be safe and not die. Read the podocarpus profile» THE GLORIES OF _IPOMOEA_ Steve lets a few cypress vines _Ipomoea quamoclit_ grow on his bean trellis just because they're pretty with finely cut feathery foliage and showy red blossoms. I had a couple extra seeds of 'Sensation Mix' cosmos (_Cosmos bipinnatus_ ) a few years ago. I tossed them into a planter on the balcony and forgot about them. A single seed germinated, grew into a huge plant and became the star attraction of that year's balcony garden. Read more » I planted a pack of bargain-bin orange cosmos (_Cosmos sulphureus_ ) seeds in late June. They're just now beginning to bloom which is a relief because the seedlings look very much like those of ragweed ! This annual is very easy to grow and attracts swarms of bees and butterflies for food and fun. Read more » Unlike the above annual Cosmos species, the chocolate cosmos (_Cosmos atrosanguineus_ ) is a perennial. Butterflies also like this beauty which is another good reason for plant one or some! I like to grow this one in a container on my deck because they aren't reliably hardy in my Zone 6 garden. Corn salad is a small, weedy-looking vegetable that grows in a basal rosette of tender, smooth and flavorful leaves. These have a delicate, nutlike flavor and a juicy texture that seems to melt in the mouth. Also called fetticus (_Valerianella locusta_ ), this is one of the salad greens that Steve grows every year and refers to it "one of the highlights of the winter vegetable garden". Sow seeds around the time of first frost - corn salad tolerates frost and freezing temperatures and can be overwintered to USDA zone 5.
