SOME WORK I’VE DONE. Some work I’ve done. Hi, I’m Ethan. I’m a web designer who helps companies make beautiful sites and services that work everywhere. My design practice focuses on responsive, device-agnostic interfaces; on building resilient, accessible products; and on creating digital design systems at scale. Over the last two decades I’ve worked withMY JOURNAL.
Pack a plan. If you’re doing any public speaking, I have a few small (but useful!) tips. “The second step is inclusiveness.”. Here’s a quote on inclusive design I quite liked. (Maybe you’ll like it, too.) Keynote, Magic Move, and you. One of my favorite features in Apple’s Keynote is “Magic Move.”. SOURCE — ETHAN MARCOTTE Source is a project “designed to amplify the impact of journalism code.” In other words, the Source team strives to make the code behind good journalism more visible, whether that code creates a digital narrative exploring Mars, rescues data from hostile governments, or powers a World Series simulator.. In other words, Source promotes not just the code, but the community behind it.DESIGN-ISH SYSTEMS.
Design-ish systems. This is a piece of writing that was posted on 8 April 2021 . In much of the design systems work I’ve done, I’ve frequently encountered a subtle, gently persistent impulse to frame most issues as technical in nature: that once this thing is implemented, some other, deeper issue in the design system will befixed.
UNION. — ETHAN MARCOTTE A union is a democratically-elected body, one that’s built by and for its workers. Once formed, a union works to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement, a legal contract between union members and the company. The agreement governs various workplace-related matters — pay, benefits, workplace safety, and so on. STUPID JEKYLL TRICKS. Stupid Jekyll tricks. This is a piece of writing that was posted on 18 February 2018 . This little website’s currently powered by some software called Jekyll. I’m generally into it, as these things go, and thought I’d write up a couple things I use on my website. Nothing remotely groundbreaking follows, mind — just two tricksthat’ve

HI, I’M ETHAN.
I’m a web designer, writer, and speaker, and the fellow who started that whole “responsive design” thing.
It’s real nice to meet you.THE WORK I DO.
I’ve helped organizations design and build better sites and services, and to ensure they work everywhere. And in my work I’ve been fortunate enough to help clients like People Magazine, The Sundance Film Festival, and The Boston Globe to refine their design processes, improve their design systems, and to build more accessible products. CONFERENCES, WORKSHOPS, & TRAINING—OH MY. I’ve spoken at conferences across the world, including Adobe MAX, An Event Apart, and Webstock. And I’ve frequently offered workshops to my clients on a variety of topics, from pattern-driven design practices, to modern design/development workflows, to the fundamentals of creating responsive layouts. Photo credit: InUse Experience Buy the book “Responsive Web Design” A FEW THINGS I’VE WRITTEN. A few years ago, I wrote a little book about responsive design. More
recently, I wrote a book about responsive design _patterns_.
(If you’ve read either: thank you so much.) I also have a blog where I occasionally write about responsive design, the web, and everything else under the sun. (My most recent entry? That’d be “The World-Wide Work.”)
