Elephant seals live mostly at sea, spending 8-10 months of the year in the open ocean and they come ashore only twice a year. They are onshore in the winter for birthing and breeding, and in the late spring and early summer to shed their fur (molt) and grow their newskin and coat.
MOLTING | FRIENDS OF THE ELEPHANT SEAL Molting. Beginning in late March and extending into September, each of the seals, with the exception of the weaned pups of that year, will return to the rookery for a month to grow new skin and hair. THERMOREGULATION
Thermoregulation. Seals control internal temperatures and reduce heat loss by a mechanism called countercurrent heat-exchange. As an example, the arteries carrying warm blood to the hind flippers are meshed with the veins carrying cold blood. Inside this mesh, heat is transferred from the arteries to the veins, moving heat to thereturning

The elephant seal has a broad, round face with very large eyes. Pups are 3 to 4 feet (1 m) long at birth and weigh about 70 pounds (32 kg). WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW? What’s Happening Now? The number of seals at the rookery peaks three times during the year: in late January when most births have occurred, around the first of May at the peak of the juvenile/adult female molt, and in late October during the fall or juvenile haul-out. The annual cycle begins in November with the arrival of mature males at the WHERE DO ELEPHANT SEALS LIVE? Elephant seals live mostly at sea, spending 8-10 months of the year in the open ocean and they come ashore only twice a year. They are onshore in the winter for birthing and breeding, and in the late spring and early summer to shed their fur (molt) and grow their newskin and coat.

Your charitable LIFESPAN OF AN ELEPHANT SEAL The more than double mortality rate of the male may be the result of their foraging preference in areas rich in orcas. For those few who do survive, the maximum lifespan for male northern elephant seals is age 14; for females it is to age 20 or more. FASTING | FRIENDS OF THE ELEPHANT SEAL Fasting as long as three months, one of the longest mammalian fasts, ensures the male retains mating access to females. Female elephant seals nurse their pups for about a month. Leaving the rookery to forage could result in a female losing her pup, a major cause of pup mortality. Weaned pups (weanlings) remain on the beach after theirmothers

QUESTION OR COMMENT? _Friends of the Elephant Seal_ is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating people about elephant seals and other marine life and teaching stewardship for the ocean off the central coast of California. It is a cooperating association with California StateParks.
The northern elephant seal,_ Mirounga angustirostris,_ is an extraordinary marine mammal. It spends eight to ten months a year in the open ocean, diving 1000 to 5800 feet deep for periods of fifteen minutes to two hours, and migrating thousands of miles, twice a year, to its land-based rookery for birthing, breeding, molting, and rest. Piedras Blancas is a great place to view these remarkable creatures during their time onshore. The Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery spreads over 6 miles of shoreline around Point Piedras Blancas on the central coast of California. The viewing areas are located 90 miles south of Monterey, 5 miles north of Hearst Castle State Historical Monument in San Simeon, 1.5 miles south of Point Piedras Blancas. The viewing areas are open every day of the year, are wheelchair accessible, and free. No reservations required.
