WORKING HOT
Time and again, electricians are told to deenergize for compliance and safety. Of course, there are exceptions. The question is what justifies an exception. Answering this requires a review of the regulation. To apply it to real life, one needs something more thought-provoking. Therefore, the following are offered: the standard and footnotes, two real life scenarios, and an Occupational Safety EYE AND FACE PROTECTION Safety should be the best motivator It’s hard to resist telling morbid stories of occupational accidents to motivate individuals to take safety precautions. However, the ease with which foreign objects can enter the eyes should speak for itself. Add to this the damage an arc flash can have on an electrician’s eyes and it should be reason enough to wear the proper eye and face protection.APPLIED TAP RULES
Someone recently asked me to explain the differences between the 10-foot tap rule and the 25-foot tap rule as they apply to feeders. An additional question was raised about connecting multiple taps to the same feeder using both the 10- and 25-foot tap rules. Using examples helps simplify the approach to properly applying the National Electrical Code (NEC) tap rules. HOW TO TRAIN AN ESTIMATOR When I was asked to write 1,200 words on how to train an estimator I thought, “This should be easy, I train estimators every day.” After a few hours of organizing my thoughts and writing my outline, I realized 1,200 words will barely scratch the surface. At best, it might be the introduction to a book. Any attempt to educate someone, even at the most basic level, in 1,200 words would beWORKING HOT

GROUND-FAULT PROTECTION SYSTEMS FOR SERVICES Ground-fault sensing and relaying equipment is intended for use in power distribution systems rated at 600V maximum and are considered to be equipment protection devices, not personal protection devices. Ground-fault protection devices function at a predetermined value of ground fault in accordance with Section 230.95 of the National Electrical Code (NEC). HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT: HAZARDOUS ENERGY IN THE WORKPLACE Electrical energy is the most common hazardous energy in the workplace. For electricians, linemen and wiremen, it likely is the most familiar. However, hazardous energy comes in many forms, including mechanical, chemical, nuclear, pneumatic, hydraulic and gravitational. Regardless of the type, hazardous energy needs to be understood and controlled.MASS NOTIFICATION
Although notifying large groups of individuals simultaneously is not new, it is relatively new to combine emergency communications for non-fire alarm emergencies with fire alarm systems. A siren that warns of an approaching tornado is an example of a simple mass notification system. Integrating fire, security and communications systems to provide emergency notification to large groups is NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH The National Safety Council (NSC), Itasca, Ill., has observed June as National Safety Month since 1996. This annual observance aims to promote a culture of safety both in and out of the workplace. PRICING SERVICE WORK FOR PROFIT The key to profitably pricing service work is knowing the true “street cost” of running your service department, which, simply put, is the cost incurred fulfilling your customers’ needs and expectations. The cost of providing service is more than the direct cost of labor and materials expended at the customer’s site during a service call. The true street cost is the total cost of GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS, PART XXXIII General Installation Requirements, Part XXXIII. Thousands of public inputs (formerly proposals) are usually submitted for revising the next edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC). With some editions, there are global, Code-wide changes. One of the Code-wide changes in the 2014 edition was raising the voltage threshold from 600to 1,000
WHAT IS A 'UFER' GROUND? CONCRETE-ENCASED GROUNDING A “Ufer” ground is slang for what the National Electrical Code (NEC) addresses as a concrete-encased grounding electrode. The term “Ufer” does not appear in the Code, but many in the industry use it. Ufer is the name of the engineer who created it as a solution to SOFTWARE HELPS CUSTOMERS AND UTILITIES CALCULATE ENERGY Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, N.M., released a software tool designed to help utilities and utility customers (and the electrical contractors they hire) “assess the economic value of installing an energy storage system.” Quest, the free, open Skip to main content* Sections
