Archaeological evidence suggests that an Anglo-Saxon defensive structure predated the Norman Castle. This was not unusual, and in fact was the case in Dover, London, Exeter, Hastings, Winchester, and Pevensey, where castles were constructed after the Norman Conquest. ST CUTHBERT'S SHRINE DURHAM WORLD HERITAGE SITE “One of the Most Sumptuous Monuments in all England” The simplicity of St Cuthbert’s shrine today belies its original appearance, which was ornate. It is said that just one of the many jewels decorating the shrine would have been worth a king’s ransom. This Benedictine abbey is a text-book example of Romanesque architecture, with its square tower, solid construction, and small, round-archedwindows.
OWENGATE DURHAM WORLD HERITAGE SITE Owengate, the road leading up to Palace Green, gets its name from the gate originally located at the top of the street. The gate was part of the Castle defenses, controlling access to the Castle and Cathedral. The shopping list for Whit Week in 1346 includes “600 salt herrings; 400 white herrings; 30 salted salmon; 14 ling (a member of the cod family); 55 kelengs (?); 4 turbot; 2 horse-loads of white fish and a conger eel, plaice, sparling (young herring), and eels and fresh water fish; 9 carcasses of oxen, salted; 1 carcase and a quarter fresh; a quarter of an ox THE KEEPER OF THE SHRINE DURHAM WORLD HERITAGE SITE (From the Rites of Durham, 1530s). Opening the Shrine. His job was to look after the Holy Shrine of St Cuthbert. Whenever someone important wished to offer prayers or offerings at the shrine, and asked to see it, the Clerk of the Shrine, would immediately inform the Keeper.
