WATERFORD OR WEXFORD? Hi, First time to Ireland in June, for our last night before heading back to Dublin airport, should we stay in Waterford or Wexford, any recommendations, would like a B&B and close to the town, even if we don’t stay in Waterford, would like to stop there. ALTAMONT HOUSE & GARDENS Altamount Gardens is a place apart, a wonderland of interconnecting gardens, riverside walks and woodlands of incredible beauty and peacefulness. It change remarkably through the seasons, and is particularly lovely in late Spring, when the rhododendrons are in bloom, and early Autumn when the trees are in glorious colour. ARAN STITCHES AND THEIR MEANINGS The most commonly seen Aran stitch is the cable, of which there are many variations. These are said to symbolise fishermen’s ropes. The blackberry stitch represents nature. Some call it the trinity stitch and give it religious significance. The Moss stitch, said to symbolise abundance and growth. It is often used as a ‘filler’ in diamonds. IRISH SURNAMES OF VIKING ORIGIN The Vikings were in Ireland for relatively short time, but they left a considerable legacy of names behind. About Irish Roads. In short, many of Ireland’s roads are winding and narrow and they don’t always have the best of surfaces. A WALK AROUND JAMES JOYCE'S DUBLIN A Walk around James Joyce’s Dublin. This is a stroll around central Dublin, concentrating on places that are associated with James Joyce or with the characters in his novels and stories. The route shown is about 3.5 miles in length and there are a lot of places to stop along the way, so real enthusiasts might like to split it over two days IRISH SURNAMES OF GAELIC ORIGIN A majority, though a small one, of Irish surnames are of Gaelic origin. Many are now used primarily in their Anglicized form or have been subtlety changed in translation to English.
