NEWS AND UPDATES
FEBRUARY 12, 2019
Our next Main Street is Gardner Village , which is unique in our catalog. Not so much a historic village in its own right as much as it is a collection of historic sites brought together to one location to form that village. Gardner Village, located in West Jordan, Utah in a suburb of Salt Lake City, contains over 20 shops and several restaurants surrounding a historic mill. The area is also accessible by light rail in that it is within walking distance of the Historic Gardner Station Trax light rail station onthe red line.
JANUARY 29, 2019
For our next Main Street community, we're going to head to the 9th and 9th area of Salt Lake City. 9th and 9th is a hip and bustling neighborhood located on Salt Lake City's east side. To understand how the area got its name, one must understand Salt Lake City's street naming scheme, which isn't always easy for newcomers. Just know that it's nine blocks east and nine blocks south of downtown Salt Lake City. The area is an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and businesses serving young residents and families that have been moving to the area in recent years.JANUARY 22, 2019
Our next Main Street community is the city of Ogden , Utah. Ogden's growth over the years was a result of the railroad since the golden spike of Promontory Summit was stuck nearby. Union Station was built in Ogden, and 25th Street connected the station to Ogden's downtown. In the past, this road was a major center of vice, including alcohol, drugs, prostitution, and gambling. But eventually the area was cleaned up and became the Main Street corridor we know today. Check it out and let us know what you think.JANUARY 15, 2019
We now head over to Utah and visit some Main Streets in the Beehive State. Our first stop is Park City , known for its excellent skiing, as well as being home to the Utah Olympic Park where the 2002 Winter Olympics were largely hosted. The city is also the site of the annual Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the U.S. But the town is also home to a downtown with a Main Street complete with shopping, restaurants, and historic architecture from its nineteenth-century mining past.JANUARY 8, 2019
Our next Main Street is also on Florida's Space Coast. The City of Melbourne , Florida features not one but two Main Street areas. The first is its primary downtown which spans New Haven Avenue and features shops, boutiques, restaurants, and nightlife. The other is the Eau Gallie Arts District, which was once part of a separate city but now forms a unique Main Street area and boasts a collection of art galleries and museums.DECEMBER 11, 2018
Next up, we'll head out to the coast to visit Cocoa Village , Florida. Cocoa Village is the nickname given to the downtown area of Cocoa, Florida (no relation to Cocoa Beach, which is right on the beach and just a few more miles east). Cocoa Village is on the banks of the Indian River and features boutiques, gift shops, antique stores, restaurants, and more. It earned the "Village" moniker from its narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets and giant shady oak trees. Check it out and let us know whatyou think.
DECEMBER 4, 2018
Our next stop through Florida, takes us to Mount Dora. Yes, Florida is the flattest state in the union, but Mount Dora gets its name from being in one of those few hilly portions in the middle of the state. So you can enjoy the scenic drive to get there, and once you arrive, enjoy the history, the restaurants, and the wide array of shopping, including the many antique shops in Mount Dora. Also, despite being in Central Florida, Mount Dora is a waterfront town, since it's on the banks of Lake Dora!NOVEMBER 27, 2018
After our trip through sunny California, we'll now head east to the Sunshine State of Florida. Our first stop is Winter Park in Central Florida. Park Avenue, or "Park Ave" as the locals call it is the Main Street for Winter Park. Just a few miles north of downtown Orlando, it is an upscale retail district with high end stores and restaurants. Winter Park is also home to many cultural institutions that serve the entire metro area, including several museums and even Rollins College, Florida's oldest recognized college, which sits at the southern end of Park Avenue.NOVEMBER 13, 2018
Next, we'll head further down the coast to Old Town San Diego . Old Town is nicknamed the Birthplace of California. It is the site of the oldest settled area in San Diego and is the site of the first European settlement in present-day California. The area is known for its preserved and recreated historic architecture, much of it found on a large state park. Old Town is also known for its excellent shopping and restaurants, including an abundance of high-quality Mexicanrestaurants.
OCTOBER 30, 2018
Our trip through California continues as we head down the coast into San Diego's North County region. We head to Encinitas , which has a very unique Main Street that is actually part of historic U.S. Highway 101. The road used to be the main north-south route through the area before being supplanted by nearby Interstate 5. However, you can still take the highway today and enjoy a scenic tour of the coast and enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean and other nearby Main Street communities.OCTOBER 23, 2018
We'll head back to the coast for our next Main Street. This one is Balboa Island , which is in the city of Newport Beach, California. Located in Orange County, the area is famous for its beaches, marinas, and some of the most expensive real estate in the country. But Balboa Island is also famous for its Frozen Bananas and its Balboa Bars, frozen ice cream dipped in chocolate and topped with your choice of candy. Who says the well-heeled don't like the simple things in life?OCTOBER 16, 2018
Next, we'll continue our tour of Southern California by heading inland to the City of Orange . The Old Towne Orange Historic District is a unique area in Orange County, California in that its downtown was largely preserved allowing future generations to enjoy its historic architecture. The district is centered around the large Orange Plaza and is known for its many antique stores, boutiques, restaurants, and other businesses. Check it out and let us know what you think.OCTOBER 9, 2018
This week we continue our trip through California. Our next stop is Seal Beach . It's one of those rare coastal Southern California places that maintains a small town atmosphere despite being so close to the beach. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), Main Street offers visitors gifts shops, boutiques, and antique stores. And as you get closer to the ocean, you totally start to pick up that beach vibe.OCTOBER 2, 2018
We'll now head out to the west coast to one of our favorite states for Main Streets. Let's spend some time in the great state of California, starting with Avalon on Catalina Island. Reachable by ferry, it feels like an entire world away from the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles. Check out the town of Avalon, and don't forget to explore the rest of the island while you're there too.SEPTEMBER 25, 2018
Now, we're going to move away from the Mid Atlantic states for awhile and head to the deep south to New Orleans, Louisiana. Let's hop off the beaten path of the usual touristy spots and visit Magazine Street .
