Arch for Arch is an architectural structure commissioned by Design Indaba that commemorates the work and life of one of South Africa’s most celebrated figures, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.. Commissioned by Design Indaba and supported by Liberty, the #ArchForArch project celebrates its namesake Tutu (lovingly nicknamed “the Arch”).Its design is meant to be a physical representation of his WE INTERVIEW FORMER DESIGN INDABA EMERGING CREATIVE MPHO What prompted this collaboration - how did your brands come together? HOMECOMING - The Collection began during lockdown in 2020 – a time during which ‘home’ came to mean so much more to all of us as a place of refuge and safety during the uncertainty of a pandemic. 17 INNOVATIVE WAYS TO ADDRESS WATER AND 17 Innovative ways to address water and sanitation. Water is a basic human need, but in many parts of the world access to clean, safe water is limited. We look at design that helps tackle this. 27 YOUNG SOUTH AFRICAN CREATIVES TO WATCH Leah Bessa. The 26-year-old studied at the University of Stellenbosch for an MSC in food science, which she completed in 2016. Based in Cape Town, Leah uses insects as a form of consumption in creating natural lactose-free ice cream. Her food designs are seen as healthy products, but that still taste as delicious. A NEW BRIDGE ACROSS THE MZAMBA RIVER CONNECTS A RURAL Vienna-based non-profit organisation for architecture and development, buildCollective, is collaborating with Austrian thesis students to build a 140 metre suspension bridge to connect the Eastern Cape Mzamba community to the infrastructure on the far bank of KwaZulu Natal. Every year children in the Mzamba community drown in the fast-moving river and during the rainy season the whole 6 DESIGNERS WHO USE WASTE AS INSPIRATION FOR NEW PRODUCTS Turning Cairo's trash into treasure. While studying in Europe, Egyptian entrepreneurs Rana Rafie and Yara Yassin were inspired by the recycling and upcycling boom taking place around them. Hailing from Cairo, one of the most polluted cities in the world, the two decided to take their new passion home. There they founded UpFuse, a upcycling ECO-FRIENDLY CONSTRUCTION BLOCKS MADE FROM PLASTIC WASTE The RePlast machine turns any type of plastic waste into a RePlast block. Unlike regular concrete, the blocks do not require glue or any other adhesive. While they’re currently made in the shape of traditional concrete blocks, RePlast blocks can be customised to multiple shapes and densities. Because the system is modular, it isportable.
HOW WILL CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECT OUR EATING HABITS IN 30 This is valued at about R61,5 billion. Food designer Chloe Rutzerveld specialises in looking into this, specifically rejected vegetables. Her concept, Stroop, is a flat, sweet snack made purely out of veggie by-products. From turning food waste into snacks to vegetable-based alternatives to meat, we have the The Impossible Burger. THREE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO WATER SHORTAGE IN SOUTH Hippo Roller. Two engineers from Gauteng designed Hippo Roller to create easier access to water in impoverished communities. Many of South Africa’s communities lack basic access to clean drinkable water, and instead have to travel long distances and then carry the heavy buckets back.
