DEBATING EUROPE
Debating Europe is the platform where YOU can debate the issues you care about with European politicians and experts. ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST CAPITALISM To put it bluntly, capitalists exploit the labour value from their workers to fill their own pockets. In capitalism, only companies that make a profit can survive, or they will lose market share to competitors. This means that profit – not workers’ rights orwelfare –
ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST THE UNITED NATIONS The United Nations (UN) was founded in 1945 after the end of the Second World War with one central aim: to maintain international peace. Ever since, the UN have been working to prevent conflict, help parties in conflict make peace, and create the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish. The ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST DEMOCRACY ‘Cynicism is laziness masquerading as wisdom.’ The most common argument against democracy is that voters are uninformed. Yet voters don’t have to be policy experts to make reasoned choices. We all rely on ‘information shortcuts’ to make decisions. Be it political parties, opinion leaders ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST VEGANISM Vegan diets tend to be rich in foods that have proven health benefits: fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, nuts, beans and pulses. A vegan diet is typically higher in fibre, and lower in cholesterol, protein, calcium and salt compared to a non-vegan diet. Research suggests that vegans may have a lower risk of heart disease than non-vegans. ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST COMMUNISM The emergence of black markets to offer alternatives to the standardised and lower-quality products provided by the government is a common trait of communist states. Moreover, under a communist system it’s not just consumer choice which is limited: education is also controlled by the government and jobs are assigned according tocollective needs.
ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY There’s a reason why the death penalty is favoured in authoritarian regimes: it is the ultimate form of state control. Troublesome political dissidents can be mixed in with criminals and drug dealers on death row, and any criticism can be deflected as being “soft on crime”. 3. CLOSURE. Doctors are far too quick to prescribe drugs to patients and it’s becoming a serious problem. From the opioid crisis in the United States, to the global rise in antibiotic resistant bacteria, it’s clear that too many physicians are bowing to pressure from their patients and writing out prescriptions. Populism can and will survive the pandemic. The future of populism depends on many different factors, the pandemic is only one factor among many. So far, there is no consistent trend across Europe on how the pandemic has affected populist parties. Some populist parties have lost ground, others have held their place, some have even gainedsupport.

WHY ARE WE STILL ARGUING OVER GENDER QUOTAS? The EU prides itself on having equality between women and men as one of its founding values, but how much do the EU’s values match up with reality? In Europe, only one manager out of three is a woman and she earns almost a quarter less than a man. Half the population is not equally represented on the labour market.
