THE FIRST THING I’M GOING TO DO The first thing I’m going to do. For the vast majority of us, the COVID-19 virus has become a daily, integrated part of what we do: Leave the house with a mask on, enter the supermarket with a mask on, go out only to do things that are “essential.”. We’re inundated with messages about how serious the virus is, and how we need toprotect
RULES OF CRAIGSLIST: FOR BUYERS In honor of the disclaimer craigslist attaches to every mail that comes in, I decided to create a more exhaustive two-part series of rules to follow when buying and selling there. Using these rules as a guide, you'll be more comfortable in the jungle that is Craigslist. AUTOMATE VMWARE CONVERTER 5 FOR BACKUPS OR DISASTER Perhaps a daft move, but VMware Converter (sometimes called P2V or vCenter Converter) no longer allows you to script the creation of a machine image by way of the command line. This used to be possible in earlier versions of Converter but was unceremoniously removed from version 5.0 and up. This has many confused, who used the tool as something of a “poor man’s disaster recovery tool”. EXTRACT FILES FROM WINDOWS EASY TRANSFER (MIG) ARCHIVES First off, you’ll want to get the free tool that opens.MIG files. It’s called MIG Recovery and Viewer Utility and runs on Vista, 7, and likely 8. I didn’t test it, but it appears as though this tool will not run on Windows XP. All you need to do is run the tool and direct it to open the .MIG file SCHEDULE A TASK WHEN PC SWITCHES FROM CHARGING TO AC As I was going over some issues others have had – I came across a fascinating question in the Microsoft Answer newsgroups. The user essentially wanted to trigger the execution of a task when the computer goes from being on battery to AC and vice versa. Since the Windows Task Scheduler does not include the ability to set a WINDOWS: REVERT BACK TO THE LAST LOGIN NAME (AND MAKE IT This rather obscure request had me thinking of scenarios where it would be useful to change the last user name in Windows. Imagine you’re a network admin and you want to do some work on the PC as the domain or local administrator. When you finish and log out (assuming the last user name display is enabled), the login screen will display “administrator” or “domain\administrator WHY ARE BLOGGER AND ANALYTICS STATS SO DIFFERENT? BRIDGE NETWORKING IN DOCKER: ASSIGNING STATIC IPS ON Docker has been an amazing tool for deploying applications fast, but as I have come to need containers that interacted with each other, the networking aspects have brought some major challenges.
THE STRANGE REGRESSION OF UNIFI AND ITS NVR Unifi dabbled in the hardware/software integration waters with its NVR product, but that was only intended for small-scale scenarios. Next, Unifi Protect was released with a new generation of cameras. This system improved on some problems in the previous release. Gone was the port forwarding headache, replaced by WebRTC. SCHEDULE A TASK WHEN PC SWITCHES FROM CHARGING TO AC As I was going over some issues others have had – I came across a fascinating question in the Microsoft Answer newsgroups. The user essentially wanted to trigger the execution of a task when the computer goes from being on battery to AC and vice versa. Since the Windows Task Scheduler does not include the ability to set a HOW TO ROTATE A VIDEO IN 5 EASY STEPS WITH AVIDEMUX 1. LOGMEIN ON SAFARI: SOLVING THE PAIN If you use Logmein on all the time, you'll know that working from an Apple OSX machine has always been something of a pain. I have tried a number of things to get around some of the bugs I've seen, but few things really help. I found something today that has improved the use of Logmein on a Mac greatly. Let's take a look at the problem and what you can do to solve it. BASICS: HOW DO I FIND MY COMPUTER NAME? Windows XP. XP is older, but still commonly used. You’ll first click the Start Button and then Control Panel. In the Control Panel, look for the icon named “System” and double-click on that. BOOK REVIEW: THE CRASH DETECTIVES __Kevin Costain __9th February, 2020__ review
My thoughts on The Crash Detectives: Investigating the World’s Most Mysterious Air Disasters – This is definitely not a book to read on a flight. I had just gotten to the runway on a one hour trip when picking up this book to continue post-chapter 1. That was a bad idea. I doubt a page was read before I locked it away tight in my carry-on bag. I nevertheless endured and finally finished the book., on I really enjoyed actually.4 stars of 5

HOW TO GATHER EMAIL ADDRESSES FROM MAIL AND OTHER DATA TO CREATE ALIST
__Kevin Costain __27th January, 2020__ blog
A disclaimer, you shouldn’t just add people to a newsletter list indiscriminately. You should endeavor to get them to opt-in in every way possible. Another other option sucks. While what I describe is a bit of a special case, all the addresses that I extracted were used tosolicit opt-ins.
Right, so my problem here was that a client asked needed to extract data from a few disparate sources and build a clean, usable list of email addresses. Certainly no small feat since some of this was going to have to come out of an email account itself. I wasn’t even going to benefit from working from contacts either – addresses had to come from the messages themselves. I’m going to describe what I did toget there.
Also, this only relates to work with data locally. This does not describe scraping email addresses off web sites, etc. That may be another challenge for another day.Read More

10 BOOKS I LOVED IN 2019 __Kevin Costain __28th December, 2019__ blog
My list for last year was rather short at only three books, but
I’ve managed to expand my reading. Reading is something I do as much as I can. That can be difficult at times. If I’m not reading every day, things feel off. I try to sneak a couple pages of reading in lineat the supermarket.
Lists around this time can be a gift because it gives us readers ideas about or next book. Here are the books I’ve enjoyed this year in noparticular order.

HOW TO WATCH FOR KIJIJI SCAMS WITH A CRITICAL EYE __Kevin Costain__4th October, 2019
__ blog
Could scammers be working out of this location? While posting a product online, I came across a well-developed scam. When I saw it, I wanted to humor the bad guys and see what information I might glean from the process. This is not something you should do, but the details I’ve gathered can help you look at these scams with a more critical eye to avoid them. Scam watching is more important today given how sophisticated they can be.Read More

HOW BEST TO STORE YOUR PASSWORDS SECURELY AND SAFELY IN AN OFFLINEDATABASE

“Password Day”

Direction is licensedunder _CC0 1.0
Passwords aren’t going anywhere. Even though we’ve seen a rise in new type of authentication including two-factor and even Yubico -style log in options; passwords still seem to persist in our lives. If you’re online and use passwords (I know you do), you want to be as sure as possible when storing them. This mean, no more writing passwords on paper or post-it notes – it justisn’t safe.

WHAT MAKES YOUR WRITING VALUABLE? __Kevin Costain__17th July, 2019
__ blog
That writing needs to hold some value is not a new concept. Those that write have some basic intuition that what they create needs to have some intrinsic value. Of course, if I want to write a science fiction story, it should entertain and enlighten those who read it. When I write on this blog, I carefully consider what use each post is to you. 700 articles later, I know some of them have been more valuable thanothers.

HOW TO GET BACK TO WRITING A BOOK AFTER A LONG TIME __Kevin Costain__12th June, 2019
__ blog
I’ve been writing a book for a very long time. In fact, I think I’ve been on this book for more than two years. Two years of going away, distracted by all that life offers, and returning to inch along, trying to add to my word count. One thing I’ve become very familiar with is returning cold to a book that’s been in some form of completion. Here’s how I approach this.Read More

LEAVING THE MAC FOR WINDOWS. IT’S TIME. __Kevin Costain__4th June, 2019
__ blog
I’ve moved back to Windows from MacOS. As a decade-long Macbook user, this huge shift (for me) deserves some explaining. In my business, many look to me for understanding about what to use, and quite literally the computer I use every day influences other’s choices, reactions and ultimately purchase decisions.Read More

APPLE BEWARE
__Kevin Costain __19th December, 2018__ blog
“Please send me that screenshot, I want to beat the snow”. I’ve come to a small coffee shop ten minutes from home to connect and wait for confirmation of legitimacy almost as clandestine as “proof of life”. A gray market seller of an Apple laptop is making the aforementioned computer available, sealed in the box for hundreds of dollars under Apple’s retail cost. I get the image, it shows the serial number, it shows the warranty is active, and it’s enough for me to start the 3 hour trek through rush hour, a looming snowstorm anduncertainty.

THREE BOOKS I ENJOYED IN 2018 __Kevin Costain __5th December, 2018__ blog
The coming end of this year usually brings ponderings of the past and predictions for an unknown future; but screw that. Books are where it’s at. I love to read. As a fellow reader, you’re probably looking for books to add to the “want to read” bookshelf. I’m here to recommend three more that you should check out. These aren’t in any particular order or limited to being published this year, they’re just books I’ve read and loved.Read More
