The Curtis piano department integrates new students into the full musical life of the school from the moment they arrive. Working with distinguished artist-faculty members, pianists study solo repertoire and concertos, as well as chamber music. Curtis aims to educate and train musicians for 21st-century careers as performers on the highest GRADUATION RECITALS 2021 Celebrating Curtis Musicians. CURTIS MOURNS THE PASSING OF PETER SERKIN Curtis Mourns the Passing of Peter Serkin. Mr. Serkin (Piano ’64) passed away on February 1 at age 72. The Curtis Institute of Music was deeply saddened to learn that Peter Serkin passed away on February 1 at age 72. An alumnus, former faculty member, and profoundly gifted CURTIS MOURNS THE PASSING OF JOHN WEAVER Curtis mourns the death of acclaimed organist, teacher, and colleague John Weaver, who passed away on February 1 at age 83. Dr. Weaver (Organ ’59) was a member of the Curtis faculty for more than three decades, from 1971 to 2003. As a small child in eastern Pennsylvania, John loved to listen to his pastor father play the organ and piano. Curtis’s conducting fellows program provides a unique opportunity for young conductors at a crucial time in their development. In keeping with Curtis’s characteristic “learn by doing” approach, conducting fellows gain valuable experience through opportunities to lead rehearsals and performances of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, Curtis Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble 20/21, and Curtis Opera WHAT IF SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN ON CAMPUS TESTS POSITIVE FOR If a staff member who has been on campus tests positive for COVID-19, they must report their positive test confidentially to Human Resources, who will ask contact tracing questions to determine if any other Curtis community members may now be at risk. Gary Graffman has been a major figure in the music world since his debut with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of eighteen. For the next three decades he toured almost continuously, playing the most demanding works in the piano literature. His numerous recordings with the orchestras of New York, Philadelphia, BostonROBERT MCDONALD
Robert McDonald tours extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. He has appeared with major orchestras in the United States and was the recital partner for many years to Isaac Stern and other distinguishedinstrumentalists.

Performance courses, along with frequent opportunities to perform, are at the heart of a Curtis education. Performance courses include lessons and coachings, instrumental repertoire studies, vocal studies, and supplementary performance.MIKAEL ELIASEN
Danish-born coach and accompanist Mikael Eliasen received his early training in Copenhagen, Montreal, and Vienna. He has collaborated with numerous singers in recital worldwide, including Robert Merrill, Tom Krause, John Shirley-Quirk, Elly Ameling, Edith Mathis, Florence Quivar, Mira Zakai, Sarah Walker, Joan Patenaude-Yarnell, and Curtis alumni Theodor Uppman, Michael Schade, and Rinat Shaham.GARY GRAFFMAN
Gary Graffman has been a major figure in the music world since his debut with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of eighteen. For the next three decades he toured almost continuously, playing the most demanding works in the piano literature. Grant Loehnig collaborates with many of today’s most renowned musical artists as a pianist, vocal coach, and administrator. Internationally acclaimed as a violist as well as violinist, the versatile Ida Kavafian is an artist-member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and former violinist of the Beaux Arts Trio. Robert McDonald tours extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. He has appeared with major orchestras in the United States and was the recital partner for many years to Isaac Stern and other distinguishedinstrumentalists.
NATALIE ZHU
Piano. Pianist Natalie Zhu is the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, a Musical Fund Society Career Advancement Award, and the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award; and a winner of Astral’s National Auditions. Admissions are based on artistic promise alone. Enrollment is limited to the number of musicians needed for a symphony orchestra, opera department, and select programs in piano, composition, conducting, organ, and guitar, as well as community artist fellows and a string quartet in residence.ABOUT CURTIS
