The Cranston Historical Society has owned and maintained the Joy Homestead (circa 1770) since 1959. Joy Homestead was its headquarters until the acquisition of the Governor Sprague Mansion in 1969. Members of the Cranston Historical Society have produced two books that tell the story of our city through vintage photographs and captions. Images of America: Cranston was written in 1999 and portrays the history of our neighborhoods such as Pawtuxet, Auburn, Arlington, Edgewood, OakLawn , Knightsville, Meshanticut and Western Cranston.JOY HOMESTEAD
The Cranston Historical Society has owned and maintained the Joy Homestead (circa 1770) since 1959. Joy Homestead was its headquarters until the acquisition of the Governor Sprague Mansion in 1969. The original part of the homestead is the small one room building where Job Joy and Rachel Westcott raised their ten children. The Governor Sprague Mansion, located at 1351 Cranston Street, served as the majestic home of one of our country’s leading families in 19th century industry.
