These efforts were initiated by forester and teacher, Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck in 1898. While acting as chief forester for George W. Vanderbilt’s 125,000-acre Biltmore Estate, Dr. Schenck founded America’s first forestry school, the Biltmore Forest School. FAMILY HIKING TRAILS & OUTDOOR FUN Family Hiking Trails & Outdoor Fun - Learn about Conservation History. The Forest Festival Trail. The trail is 1.3 miles and blends Dr. Schenck’s forestry experiments with forest work today while allowing for discussions on many topics, including how plants grow, decomposition, forest issues, and past transportation methods. THE CRADLE OF FORESTRY HERITAGE SITE The Cradle of Forestry Heritage Site is open dailymid-April through early Novemberfrom 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Specifically designed for the Cradle’s 1.3 mile paved Forest Festival Trail with Agent Beaver as your guide, children are asked questions challenging their FOREST DISCOVERY CENTER Inside the Forest Discovery Center visitors can see our brand-new 26 minute movie, First in Forestry: Carl Schenck and the Biltmore Forest School, explore 15 hands-on exhibits, and shop at the Giving Tree Gift Shop.Our education wing offers two classrooms and a conference room, a perfect space for hosting meetings and workshops.
