CONCRETE SURFACE COLOR PROBLEMS AND HOW TO FIX THEM What type of performance is expected? No repair is as good as the original. What type of maintenance is acceptable? The following is an overview of some of the most common concrete surface color problems and successful repair products and systems for surface color issues that I have worked with over the last 15 years. EPOXY-BONDED STONE SYSTEMS HIT THE DECORATIVE MARKET The epoxy-bonded stone system is also known in the United Kingdom as resin-bonded or resin-bound systems. Over there, resin-bonded involves scattering loose stone onto a coating of resin. In the U.S., resin-bound refers to aggregate and resin blended together prior to application. www.hovertrowel.com. THE IMPORTANCE OF BONDING PRIMERS ON CONCRETE Bonding primers serve two purposes when applied to concrete before topcoating, according to Victor Pachade, national sales manager for Smart Surface Technology, manufacturer of Colormaker products. “They seal the concrete surface and develop a bond line for a coating or topping to bond to the substrate.”. The hot pressurized water, usually more than 200 F, must bedistributed
CONCRETE QUESTIONS: CAN YOU RESTORE SOLVENT-BASED CONCRETE In the case of the 5-year-old stamped patio, my recommendation would be to try a solvent bath with xylene or use one of the new solvent bath products on the market. Spray a thin coat across the surface and let it liquefy the sealer. Use a clean 3/8-inch-nap roller and back-roll across the area a few times to work out the problem area. The carrier (water) evaporates, leaving the color behind. These color washes have no bond to the concrete and require a sealer to lock them into place. Their biggest limitation is lack of depth of color. HOW ADDING COLOR TO CONCRETE SEALERS CREATES BEAUTIFUL In general, there are three ways to think about adding color to a concrete installation. The first, as noted above, is to add a color pigment to the original mix. This can be very effective, but finish and color consistency can vary. WHY CONCRETE SEALERS MAY LEAVE A LINGERING ODOR There are a lot of factors that impact the evaporation rate including, but not limited to, air temperature, air movement, solvent type, air pressure and surroundings. Now that we know the odor comes from the liquid evaporating as the sealer dries, we can start trying to figure out where or why the sealer is still drying months after application. The carrier (water) evaporates, leaving the color behind. These color washes have no bond to the concrete and require a sealer to lock them into place. Their biggest limitation is lack of depth of color. FLOATING CONCRETE TOOLS FOR FINISHING CONCRETE FLOORS A float, generally, is a flat metal, wood, or laminate tool that smoothes the surface of freshly laid concrete. The term “floating” refers to the application of pressure so a float sits lightly and flatly just on top of the surface of the poured concrete and pushes the aggregate down, allowing the liquid in the concrete to rise, dry,and
HOW ADDING COLOR TO CONCRETE SEALERS CREATES BEAUTIFUL In general, there are three ways to think about adding color to a concrete installation. The first, as noted above, is to add a color pigment to the original mix. This can be very effective, but finish and color consistency can vary. The second is a stain that uses a chemical reaction, and the resulting color is what remains. PICKING THE RIGHT MIXER AND PADDLE FOR CONCRETE A two-handled mixer and the right blade for the product being mixed can provide more comfort for the person doing the work, a more thorough mix and a more consistent mix from batch to batch. Add water as needed until a peanut butter consistency is reached. 4 Mist the blocks with water to a surface-saturated dry condition. Using a trowel, apply a thick, even coat of surface-bondingcement.

Choosing the right roller sleeve is important because with rollers, you get what you pay for, says Sullivan. “Consider the core, the length of the nap, and what the cover is made of. LAYERING COLOR WITH ACID STAINS ON CONCRETE There are limits to how many layers of color can be built up on top of one another. One limit is the availability of free lime, which acid stains need to react with. Each layer of acid stain uses up some of the free lime in the cementitious surface. Once all lime is gone, so is the ability of the cementitious surface to take further acid stain. Artcrete’s Deck Coat, for its part, is a two-part precolored product that is spray-applied over adhesive stencils on existing vertical concrete surfaces. When stenciling wet panels, Peters recommends using self-consolidating concrete with strength of at least 5,000 pounds persquare inch.
SEEDING AGGREGATE IN CONCRETE Before there was stamped concrete and before the emergence of acid staining, an exposed aggregate finish was the decorative concrete choice by many. Broadcasting, or "seeding" aggregate is somewhat of a lost art for contractors who are relative newcomers to the trade, but this application is a very popular choice still. HOW TO FIX BUG HOLES IN CONCRETE COUNTERTOPS IN ONE STEP Allow your slab to dry before filling the bug holes, or use air to drive the water out of the holes. CSA cement seems to have been invented to fill bug holes. It shrinks a lot less than portland cement and it sets a lot faster. I use a mixture of CSA cement, pigment as needed, and a 1 to 1 ratio of Acryl 60 and water.
