► Governor JARED POLIS on Monday outlined a path forward forColorado
to begin to return to normal life after more than a month of stay-at-home orders, though critics worry that there is still a severe shortage of coronavirus testing in our state. As Denver 7reports:
> Colorado public health officials said Monday that even once the > governor begins to lift the stay-at-home order next week, strict > physical distancing measures, the wearing of masks and better > COVID-19 case detection and containment will be needed for months to > avoid overwhelming the state’s ICU hospital beds.>
> Gov. Jared Polis said Monday afternoon he would allow the statewide > stay-at-home order to expire Sunday, but plans keep those strict > measures discussed by health officials in place as the state > gradually begins to reopen through what Polis said would be “safer > at home” guidance. Polis said retail businesses could begin curbside delivery on Monday, April 27. Elective surgeries will be allowed beginning that same day. Large workplaces will be allowed to open at 50 percent capacity beginning on May 4. Polis says he hopes bars, restaurants, and clubs can reopen by mid-May but warned that more data was needed before he can make that decision. ► There are conflicting stories about the progress of another coronavirus stimulus bill in Congress. As _The Washington Post_reports:
> Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said Tuesday that > lawmakers and the White House have reached a nearly $500 billion > deal to replenish a small business lending program slammed by the > coronavirus and to boost spending on hospitals and testing…>
> …However, a Senate GOP leadership aide cautioned that a deal was > close but not yet completed as it awaited final sign-off from GOP > leaders. The aide spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss > private negotiations. Democrats have been demanding that more money is included to provide relief to local governments and municipalities. Meanwhile, _The Colorado Sun_ breaks down Colorado’s $7.4 billion share from the first round of funding for the Paycheck Protection Program. ► CNN once again fact-checks PRESIDENT TRUMP’S daily coronavirus briefing. ► We’ve mentioned before that nearly 8 in 10 Americans DO NOTAGREE
with the narrative being pushed by protestors who are mad about stay-at-home orders. Now, a new poll shows that the majority of Americans believe these protestors are wrong. From Newsweek:
> The latest survey by Yahoo! News and YouGov found that 60 percent of > the U.S. public opposed protesters calling for an immediate end to > social distancing measures and stay-at-home orders designed to > protect public safety.>
> Less than a quarter of respondents (22 percent) said they supported > the rallies calling for America to be “reopened” while a further > 18 percent said they were “not sure” how they felt on the> matter.
The coronavirus also disagrees with these protestors. The state of Kentucky saw a surge in coronavirus cases a few days after rallies from right-wing meatheads who are mad about stay-at-home orders. _If you’re looking for political news that isn’t about Coronavirus, it’s available right after the jump…_(more…)
PREVENTABLE TRAGEDY: WISCONSIN ELECTIONS SPREAD COVID0
by: Colorado Pols
April 21,
2020 at 11:05 AM MDT Wisconsin voters in line, April 7, 2020. NBC NEWS has a sad but very predictable update on the recent elections held in the state of Wisconsin, in which the Democratic governor attempting to delay voting until a vote-by-mail system could be put in place was overruled by the state’s conservative-dominated SupremeCourt:
> Officials have identified seven people who appear to have contracted > the coronavirus through activities related to the April 7 election > in Wisconsin, Milwaukee’s health commissioner said, and advocates > worry it could be just the “tip of the iceberg.”>
> Commissioner Jeanette Kowalik said six of the cases involve > Milwaukee voters and one is a Milwaukee poll worker, the Journal > Sentinel reported…>
> Wisconsin proceeded with in-person voting only after a bitter > partisan fight. The state’s Democratic governor tried to shift the > election to vote-by-mail and postpone it, but was blocked by the > conservative majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the > Republican-controlled legislature, prompting the chairman of the > Wisconsin Democratic Party to warn that voters would die as a> result.
>
> Now, Wisconsin Democrats worry there may be more yet-to-be-reported > cases since Milwaukee officials say they have only about 30 percent > of the data in yet and officials in other parts of the state have > yet to release information on Election Day-related infections. Images of Wisconsin voters futilely attempting to practice social distancing while standing in line at polling places caused nationwide outrage, and called attention once again to the GOP’s very deliberate policy goal of obstructing the right to vote for urban and minority populations in particular. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the stark contrast between states which enforce rigid and often arbitrary laws requiring additional correspondence with officials to avoid being purged from the rolls and costly government issued IDs to register well in advance and states like Colorado, with accessible, secure mail ballots and same-day voter registration was emerging as a major new civil rights frontier. The net result is severely unequal access to the vote across differentstates.
Now, unfortunately, we may soon be talking about a cost in lives. But even under a tragic headline, there’s some hope for Wisconsin in this story–delivered by none other than Colorado Division of Elections Director JUDD CHOATE: > Judd Choate, the director of elections in Colorado, one of five > states that vote entirely by mail, said he actually saw a silver > lining in Wisconsin’s ability to dramatically scale up absentee > mail balloting…>
> “They went from almost no vote-by-mail to over half vote-by-mail > in a couple of weeks,” Choate told reporters on a call organized > by the National Vote at Home Institute. “Yes, there were lines, > yes there were these odd circumstances of people wearing masks and > standing a great distance apart from each other. But that’s the > in-person part. The vote-by-mail part actually went pretty well.” For the voters who were able to take advantage of absentee ballots in Wisconsin, that’s a win. But the sum of Wisconsin’s experience, from the partisan political battle preceding lines on Election Day to the cases of pandemic disease that appear to have directly resulted, could not be a more powerful argument for every state to adopt Colorado’s model of all-mail ballots without delay. THE HARDEST CALLS: GOV. POLIS WEIGHS LIFE AND DEATH DECISIONS7
by: Colorado Pols
April 21,
2020 at 9:46 AM MDT
Gov. Jared Polis (D). As a team of _Denver Post_ reporters detail for us,
yesterday Gov. JARED POLIS outlined a process by which the state of Colorado will begin to reopen the mostly-shuttered economy at the end of April after over a month of mandatory stay-at-home orders in place–orders which appear to have definitively turned the tide against the COVID-19 pandemic, though at great cost to the economy here in Colorado and across the globe. > The first stage of Colorado’s response to the novel coronavirus > pandemic is ending, but the second phase will be far from a return > to normal life, Gov. Jared Polis said Monday as he laid out > expectations for how the state will reopen after his stay-at-home > order expires Sunday.>
> Coloradans will need to shift from staying at home to being “safer > at home,” Polis said, outlining how the state’s order will morph > into strong recommendations for residents with restrictions on the > businesses that are able to slowly reopen in the coming weeks.>
> Polis said he expects retailers will have the option to reopen with > curbside pickup beginning April 27, and then will be able to reopen > to limited numbers of in-store customers on May 1, as long as they > have social-distancing policies in place. As MARIANNE GOODLAND of the _Colorado Springs Gazette_ reports,
there is increasing evidence that the stay-at-home orders have been highly effective in slowing the spread of COVID-19 in this state: > Officials with the Colorado Department of Public Health and the > Colorado School of Public Health presented that data in a conference > call with reporters Monday afternoon. “We did well,” said Dr. > Jonathan Samet, dean of the Colorado School of Public Health. > “We’ve reduced the contact rate to 75%” and the curve — a > measure that shows the peak of infections and when that peak takes > place — is going down.>
> Despite the news that social distancing has begun to show results, > the officials said that 65,000 to 75,000 Coloradans likely have > contracted COVID-19, well above the 10,098 cases listed by CDPHE for> Monday.
But as 9NEWS’ KYLE CLARK pointed out last night, there’s a problem: one of the key preconditions previously voiced by Gov. Polis himself for reopening the economy as well as the consensus of health experts fighting the pandemic, widespread available testing for the disease to enable informed decisions from the statewide to the individual level, has not been met. This undeniable change in the stated criteria for reopening Colorado’s economy cannot help but create legitimate concern that the pressure to do so is overcoming the best advice of public health officials battling the pandemic, which is to keep stay-at-home orders in place until ubiquitous testing and the containment strategies testing facilitates become feasible. As history shows, premature loosening of restrictions on public life can unleash a second wave of disease worse than thefirst.
Throughout this unprecedented emergency, we and every other responsible editorial voice have rejected the armchair quarterbacking of qualified experts by politicians who either don’t understand or _don’t value_ the lives at stake. There is no question the tremendous damage being inflicted on the economy by this pandemic is a very serious crisis all its own, and requires intervention no less robust than control of the disease itself. At some level every medical expert also understands that economic devastation is also a public health threat. But the lives that would otherwise be lost _have tocome first._
What we can say is that the overwhelming trust Coloradans have for Gov. Polis right now shown in available polling is based on his perceived diligence in responding to the crisis, and overriding attention to public health before politics–even when it would be very tempting to focus on the Trump administration’s vast incompetence. Gov. Polis doesn’t need low-information protesters endangering themselves and others to know that getting Colorado functioning again economically is secondary in importance only to stopping the pandemic itself. These are the hardest calls any leader has to make. The polls say Gov. Polis has earned the trust to make them. And we must all now hope for the best.TUESDAY OPEN THREAD

CORY GARDNER EMBRACES TRUMP IN REPUBLICAN PRIMARY CAMPAIGN AD13
by: Erik MaulbetschApril 20,
2020 at 5:29 PM MDT
_(Promoted by Colorado Pols)_ Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) wanted to make it absolutely clear to his fellow Republicans at their virtual state assembly on Saturday that he stands firmly with President Trump. In place of a standard candidate speech, Gardner’s campaign played a video montage of Trump praising Gardner as the two men shared the stage in February at the Trump campaign rally held in Colorado Springs. > PRESIDENT TRUMP: I want to bring up a man who’s going to win the > election with us and really he has been- he’s been so rock solid. > You know there were stories, will he…? Because we’re doing great > in the state. We’re doing great. We fight together. And he’s > been so great. Cory Gardner, please come on up, please.>
> SEN. CORY GARDNER: Look at this enormous crowd! I can’t help but > think about the enormous accomplishments we’ve had together over > the past several years for this great state. The results are simply > astounding because I believe in Colorado. I believe in America. I > believe in the power of this great nation. And I believe in all of > you. And I just have one message for all of you and to our friends > and allies around the globe. When it comes to America, you ain’t > seen nothing yet. God bless you. Let’s win in November! Careful listeners will note that Trump starts and then stops a thought- “He’s been so rock solid. You know there were stories- will he…?” Although one can never be sure what the President was alluding to at that moment, it’s a reasonable guess that he was referring to Gardner’s support of President Trump, especially during the impeachment trial.
Both the President and Sen. Gardner took criticism for Trump’s most recent act of appreciation for Sen. Gardner, when he announced via Twitter that he was awarding Colorado 100 ventilators “at the request of Senator Gardner!” Gardner then went on Fox Newsto thank
Trump for the shipment. Gardner’s first words in the video are “Look at this enormous crowd!” Along with Denver Nuggets basketball games at the Pepsi Center, Trump’s rally was among the last large events in Colorado. The rally took place at the Broadmoor Arena in Colorado Springs, which has a capacity of 9,000. The Denver Post estimated as many as 20,000 people attended the event on February 20, with those who couldn’t get inside filling the parking lots. Three weeks later, Governor Polis announced a statewide ban on public gatherings of more than 250 people. The full video
of the GOP
state assembly is available on the party’s Facebook page, with Gardner’s segment beginning at 1:12:35. There you can also see a brief speech from Gardner’s primary challenger Margot Dupré. Dupré is a real estate agent from Colorado Springs who launched her longshot challenge to Gardner because she believes there is too much corruption in the federalgovernment.
EVEN MORE REPUBLICANS JUST MAKING STUFF UP7

Rep. Scott Tipton (R). As the old saying goes, it’s not what you don’t know that gets you into trouble–it’s what you know for sure that just isn’t so. Western Slope Republicans are proving it’s still as true as ever. Congressman SCOTT TIPTON, to kick things off, heard a rumor! And on the basis of that rumor made some very stern demands of Gov. JARED POLIS: > “I am writing to seek more information on how the state of > Colorado will allocate the approximately $1.7 billion it will > receive under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security > (CARES) Act to county and local governments. RUMORS > that you plan to use the entirety of the federal aid to balance the > state’s budget, and neglect to distribute the funds to smaller > county, tribal and municipal governments for which they are > intended, are deeply troubling…>
> I am extremely concerned about information I have received that > INDICATES YOUR OFFICE PLANS TO USE ALL OF COLORADO’S CARES ACT > FUNDS TO BALANCE THE STATE’S BUDGET, rather than > allocate a portion of the funds to county and local governments to > help offset their revenue losses and unforeseen expenses related to > the pandemic. This decision would be completely unacceptable, > against Congressional intent for these funds, and I request an > immediate response from you or your office on this matter.” “SEVERAL STATE AND FEDERAL ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE TELLING LOCAL ONES THINGS THAT MAY NOT BE TRUE.” _Grand Junction Sentinel, 4/18/20_ The full text of the letter has since been deleted from Tipton’s website, and there’s a good reason. Any of you who know who Colorado’s budget-setting process works, or for that matter we believe this process works across the country, should have by now taken note of a very basic problem. As the _Grand Junction Sentinel’s_ CHARLES ASHBY reports:
> In his regular COVID-19 press briefing, Polis said he spoke to > Tipton and reminded him that AS A FORMER MEMBER OF THE COLORADO > HOUSE, HE SHOULD KNOW THAT IT’S THE COLORADO LEGISLATURE, AND NOT > THE GOVERNOR, WHO CONTROLS THE STATE’S PURSE STRINGS, so it’s up to them to decide how that money is to be> spent.
You see, governors do not pass the budget. Governors _recommend_ a budget, but budgets are assembled and passed by the legislature–the state legislature in Colorado that Rep. SCOTT TIPTON used to be a member of, and the federal legislature we call “Congress” that Tipton is a member of today. Some of the money is earmarked in the federal CARES ACT to go to _larger_ population centers, but that’s of course not the same thing–and the exact opposite of what Tipton and the “rumor” he was acting on believed. Apparently Tipton’s “rumor” was a mistaken email from COLORADO COUNTIES INC., but Tipton as a federal official has an obligation to vet allegations before they become the subject of official correspondence. Especially when the allegation is so wrong it’s silly. After all, Tipton _voted for this bill._ From here, Ashby documents how the lie traveled around the Western Slope while the truth was still getting its proverbial pants on: > The CCI email spurred Mesa County Commissioner Rose Pugliese and > state Rep. Janice Rich, R-Grand Junction, to repeat the false news > on social media Friday.>
> “Shocker!,” Pugliese wrote on Twitter. “It appears the Polis > Administration made the decision to use the state and local > government CARES Act funding, almost $1.7 billion dollars, to > balance the state’s budget.”>
> RICH LATER CORRECTED HER FACEBOOK POST AFTER CHECKING THE MATTER > WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY… SERIOUSLY FOLKS, DOESN’T ANY REPUBLICAN LEGISLATOR WEST OF THE DIVIDE UNDERSTAND HOW _THEIR OWN JOBS WORK? _Sen. BOB RANKIN serves on the JOINT BUDGET COMMITTEE and definitely knows better than this. Two seconds’ consultation with Rankin might have spared Tipton and Rep. Rich a lot of embarrassment. We assume he was not on the Zoom call. The real problem, of course, is that this kind of misinformation_ always_ travels farther and faster than the subsequent correction. Social media misinformation in particular can exponentially outrun the mainstream media’s less captivating reality, like a self-selected virus. Despite the best efforts of the _Grand Junction Sentinel_, voters on the Western Slope will go into the election season convinced that JARED POLIS swiped their cash to balance his big-city budget. We can only hope not too many, and other voters who don’t like being lied “rumored” to outnumber them. OIL PRICES DROP BELOW ZERO, AND NOT BECAUSE OF SB-18113

At one point today, a barrel of oil was trading at -$1.43, as JULIA HOROWITZ writes for CNN Business.
We won’t pretend we really understand how something can have a negative price, but apparently this is a thing that happened. This news will put a serious wrinkle in ongoing efforts by local oil and gas groups and their Colorado Republican friends to continue complaining that regulatory efforts— such as
SB-181, passed in 2019 — are stifling energy production in our state. This is also a complication for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which is pushing to open up new plots of public land for drillingin Colorado.
Anyway, the next time you hear someone say that state regulations are killing the oil and gas industry in Colorado…just smile politely and keep on walking. That narrative is officially dead. GET MORE SMARTER ON MONDAY (APRIL 20)3

► Remember earlier this month when PRESIDENT TRUMP fired theinspector general
who was supposed to oversee the distribution of coronavirus stimulus funds? It turns out that this was not a good idea! As _The Washington Post_ reports, the small business loan program ran out of money because a giant chunk of it went to _not _small businesses: > The federal government gave national hotel and restaurant chains > millions of dollars in grants before the $349 billion program ran > out of money Thursday, leading to a backlash that prompted one > company to give the money back and a Republican senator to say that > “millions of dollars are being wasted.”>
> Thousands of traditional small businesses were unable to get funding > from the program before it ran dry. As Congress and the White House > near a deal to add an additional $310 billion to the program, some > are calling for additional oversight and rule changes to prevent > bigger chains from accepting any more money…>
> …In all, more than 70> publicly
> traded companies have reported receiving money from the program, > according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Executives at Shake Shack, a $1.6 billion company, returned a $10 million dollar loan it had received after criticism from smallbusiness owners.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration and Congress are hammering out details on another coronavirus stimulus bill that could inject another $470 billion into the small business loan fund. Congressman JASON CROW (D-Aurora) is pushing locally for moremoney
to go into the Payment Protection Program. ► PRESIDENT TRUMP held another off-the-wall press briefing over the weekend that included defamatory comments toward the FBI and an open admission that he snubbed Utah Sen. MITT ROMNEY for a new committee purely out of spite. Then this happened: ► The actual President of the United States of America is literally cheerleading for anti-government protestors. As MAGGIE HABERMAN writes for _The New York Times_:
Via _The New York Times_(4/20/20)
> Whether his latest theme will be effective for him is an open > question: In an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released on Sunday, > just 36 percent of voters said they generally trusted what Mr. Trump > says about the coronavirus.>
> But the president, who ran as an insurgent in 2016, is most > comfortable raging against the machine of government, even when he > is the one running the country. And while the coronavirus is in > every state in the union, it is heavily affecting minority and > low-income communities.>
> So when Mr. Trump on Friday tweeted “LIBERATE,” his > all-capitalized exhortations against strict orders in specific > states — including Michigan — were in keeping with how he ran in > 2016: saying things that seem contradictory, like pledging to work > with governors and then urging people to “liberate” their > states, and leaving it to his audiences to hear what they want to > hear in his words. Right wing protestors mad about stay-at-home orders yelled at the State Capitol on Sunday.
The most enduring image from Sunday was a few unidentified nurses who took a break from working at a nearby hospital to make their own statement:MARIANNE GOODLAND
has more on Sunday’s circus: > Maybe half of those at Sunday’s protest wore masks. Few practiced > social distancing. As a reminder, nearly 8 in 10 Americans DO NOT AGREE with the narrative being pushed by these protestors. ► As WILL BUNCH writes for _The Philadelphia Inquirer_,
these anti-government protests look and smell a lot like the 2009 Tea Party — which was not the grassroots organization that it claimed tobe:
> I’d be something of a hypocrite to criticize the fact that people > are writing about or broadcasting these protests because a) I’m > here this morning writing about them and b) a decade ago I was so > fascinated by a right-wing protest movement with similar, sometimes > irrational demands and similar nebulous origins — the Tea Party > —that I wrote an entire book about it, _The Backlash_.>
> But what I learned back then is why I’m troubled by the way the > Times, cable TV and other outlets are covering 2020′s > “spontaneous”-not-really-right-wing rallies, because the real > story is who stands behind them, and why. ► Colorado Sen. CORY GARDNER (R-Yuma) is the subject of an ethics complaint related to a $1,000-a-bottle champagne tasting party he attended in late February in Palm Beach, Florida. The pictures from the event are not a good look for Gardner. _If you’re looking for political news that isn’t about Coronavirus, it’s available right after the jump…_(more…)

2020 at 10:17 AM MDT UPDATE 1:40PM: The very same far-right conservative firebreather MICHELLE MALKIN (see below) is on the scene of today’s hot mess of an “OPERATION GRIDLOCK DENVER” protest, and the rich, tangy ironywarms our hearts:
And she’s meeting the _most amazing friends:_ Stay safe, which at the moment means well away from downtown Denver.—–
UPDATE 1:05PM: Welcome to the next COVID-19 hotspot, Denver: Not much of a “gridlock” in this photo, but that’s too close pedestrian patriots. _Too close._—–
Top: protester in Lansing Michigan, 4/15/20. Bottom: protester and Michelle Malkin in Denver, 2/17/09. As readers know, some manner of protest is expected to take place later today in downtown Denver in the streets around the state capitol building, part of a nationwide “movement” of similar protests to one that occurred in Lansing, Michigan last week–protests that appear to have a been organized by a relatively small groupof
well-funded right-wing activists, in many ways echoing the “astroturf” organization of the so-called Tea Party protests against basically every action President BARACK OBAMA took in 2009-10. Apropos, former Speaker of the Colorado House DICKEY LEE HULLINGHORST has a new guest column for the _Denver Post_ recalling the Tea Party’s rise in 2009,
and how different things might be today if Republicans were as supportive of Obama’s economic stimulus package as they generally are of President DONALD TRUMP throwing trillions at the economy forthe same purpose:
> Obama signed the stimulus into law at the Denver Museum of Nature > and Science on February 17, 2009, as a gesture to Denver’s role in > his recent election and as a way to showcase the green energy > investments loaded within the stimulus package. His program included > cash infusions to prop up demand in a cratering economy, tax cuts > and payments to working families, money to shore up faltering state > budgets, and extended unemployment benefits. These features are all > found in the package that just passed the Senate with unanimous > Democratic and Republican votes. In 2009, not a single Republican in > the U.S. House voted for the bill, and only three Republican > senators did. This included Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, who > the Tea Party Republicans would drive out of the Republican Party> for it…
>
> Now as Colorado’s senator, Gardner just voted for a > spending bill that’s more than twice the size of Obama’s. > Gardner even advocated for specific policies that would have been > indistinguishable from the arguments for Obama’s bill in 2009. But > you see no Tea Party rallies in front of the capitol steps. And you > hear no concessions from Cory Gardner.>
> Looking back on the past decade, we have to wonder what America > would look like if the conservative Republican Party had decided the > economic health of the nation was more important than a hypothetical > election strategy. The 2009 recession might have been shorter and > less traumatic for a generation of our fellow citizens. Although the 2008 global economic crisis did not result from a pandemic disease outbreak, the situation was by far the worst economic crisis faced by the United States since the Great Depression, and it happened before Barack Obama became President. The choice by Republicans to lock down against anything that would reduce the impact of the ensuing Great Recession was a political choice, meant to harm Obama and Democrats politically by–and there’s no nice way to say this–_allowing the whole country to suffer._ Today, only the most hardcore elements of the conservative fringe–and Rep. KEN BUCK, of course–oppose
economic stimulus to hold the country together during the COVID-19 pandemic. The same Sen. CORY GARDNER who slammed the “failed stimulus” at every turn when he ran for Congress in 2010 only has the problem now of not having enough money to hand out–complaining bitterly about the depletion of PAYCHECK PROTECTION PROGRAM funds and voting for every stimulus bill he’s been presented with. What’s different today, of course, is that the well-heeled political consultant agitators who would otherwise be rallying the grassroots right into the streets to fight against the “bailout” stimulus bills have the public health orders to stay at home to exploit instead. President Trump’s chaotic management of the pandemic–first downplaying it for crucial weeks, then pretending to take it seriously, then starting to _actually_ take it seriously while laughably claiming he had always taken it seriously, building false hope with unsupported claims about various treatments, and the latest bizarre step of encouraging protests against the very same governors he claims every day to be “working with” to control the spread–has sent his supporters into a low-information frenzy of misguided rage. Sounds _awfully familiar_, doesn’t it? But this time, the consequences could be much more direct. The protesters headed to downtown Denver today understand even less about the COVID-19 pandemic than they did about the AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT OF 2009, let alone the AFFORDABLE CARE ACT OF 2010–which they would believe for the ensuing decade was killing Americans instead of driving the rate of uninsured to historic recordlows
.
The polls say overwhelmingly that the “COVID Resistance” does not represent anything close to a majority of Americans. It’s a great relief to see that Americans in every poll are much more concerned about the harm that could result from prematurely lifting stay-at-home orders than any other factor. The economic stimulus necessary to offset the inevitable economic damage from Americans staying at home is far from concluded, and is likely to increasingly divide conservatives going forward–remembering, as they surely must, what they said about economic stimulus in 2009. In the meantime? These are the same fringe folks who thought Obamacarewould kill them.
Judged by their behavior today, COVID-19 could well kill some of them. And that would be a tragic way to learn a lesson ten years coming. “SAVE OUR LIBERTY. SAVE OUR ECONOMY.”19

_(Promoted by Colorado Pols)_ A conservative talk radio host and former spokeswoman for a failed effort to recall Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) is helping spread the word about MayDay-Colorado.com , which is encouraging Colorado businesses to open May 1, whether or not they have government authorization to do so. Karen Kataline appeared this morning on conservative 710-AM radio to urge listeners to promote MayDay-Colorado and watch for the initiative’s banner at a drive-by “gridlock” rally in downtown from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 19. “Guess what? We are opening for business on May Day, the old socialist holiday,” said Kataline on air. “We are taking it back, and we don’t need the governor’s permission. We are on solid constitutional ground.” There’s no evidence that Polis’ order to shut down non-essential businesses to protect public health faces any serious constitutionalchallenge.
A MayDay-Colorado flyer available for download states : “Business Independence Day” and “MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Save our Liberty. Save our Economy.” Kataline said people should drive by the “gridlock” protest tomorrow and view the banner. Kataline, who substitutes for regular hosts on talk radio stations in the metro area, said last month that the response to the virus has been marked by hysteria. Polis has said that if the virus were to run rampant, it would do more damage to the economy than the efforts to try to fight it, as Coloradois doing.
Reached by phone, Kataline said she is not a spokeswoman for the group. She called the radio show to get the word out, she said. Greg Lopez, a former mayor of Parker who’s already announced his candidacy to oppose Polis in the next gubernatorial election, came up with the idea to push back with small businesses and open May 1 regardless of state directives, said Kataline. She also said social distancing would be respected. Lopez did not immediately return a call for comment. THE GET MORE SMARTER PODCAST: JUST STAY HOME AND LISTEN1

Vice President Pence was met on the tarmac at Petersen Air Force Base by Gov. JARED POLIS, and it appears a fairly…animated discussion tookplace:
To be a fly on _that_ tarmac, right? We’re excited to hear what they were talking about, whether it’s the recent FEMA ventilator grab in the headlines or COVID tests with your 7-Eleven Big Gulp.
Or maybe Gov. Polis is starting with the basics, explaining to Pence that COVID didn’t “disappear” after all. Stay tuned, and feel free to speculate in the meantime.WEEKEND OPEN THREAD

CORY GARDNER SIPPING $1,000 CHAMPAGNE AS COVID-19 HIT U.S.20
by: Colorado Pols
April 17,
2020 at 2:49 PM MDT
Sen. Cory Gardner (R-BLING) We noted last month on THE GET MORE SMARTER PODCAST that Sen. CORY GARDNER (R-Yuma) was identified as a high-profile attendee of a lavish champagne-tasting party in Palm Beach, Florida. Today, JUSTIN WINGERTER of _The Denver Post_ catches up on this story and a related ethics complaint that looks really, really, REALLY bad for Gardner: > On a late February night in Palm Beach, a mansion owned by > billionaire art collectors>
> was teeming with activity. Pianist Chloe Flower played Chopin, a > four-course meal was served and, most importantly for the hosts, > $1,000 bottles of some of the world’s best champagne>
> were poured.
>
> Seated somewhere near the middle of this “by-invitation > bacchanal,” in the words of one attendee, was U.S. Sen. Cory > Gardner , according to > news reports, an Instagram video and a promotional photo of the> party…
>
> …State Rep. Tom Sullivan> , a Centennial
> Democrat and outspoken critic of Gardner, says Gardner’s > appearance at the champagne party is an ethics violation. Sullivan > claimed in a complaint to the Senate Ethics Committee this week that > Gardner violated a ban on gifts of more than $50, as well as a ban > on gifts from companies that hire lobbyists.>
> GARDNER’S CAMPAIGN SAYS HE DIDN’T TAKE A GIFT FROM KRUG > CHAMPAGNE OR ANYONE ELSE ON THAT FEBRUARY NIGHT. THE CAMPAIGN SAYS > IT FULLY PAID FOR GARDNER’S EVENING WHEN, WEEKS LATER, IT SENT > $350 FROM A CAMPAIGN ACCOUNT TO LAFORCE, A NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC > RELATIONS FIRM THAT REPRESENTS KRUG. LAFORCE DID NOT RESPOND TO A > REQUEST FOR CONFIRMATION THAT THE CHECK COVERED THE COST OF > GARDNER’S NIGHT._Gah!!!_
This would be a bad look for any politician, ever, but the context of the Palm Beach event makes it look even worse for Gardner. And that’s not just because Gardner’s campaign _paid_ $350 for him tobe there.
Earlier that week, the first coronavirus case of unknown origin appeared in California. Gardner was well aware of the coronavirus problem by that point anyway. A few weeks later, in fact, Gardner voluntarily self-quarantined himself in Washington D.C. after getting word that he came in contact with aninfected person.
The champagne event appears to have taken place on Saturday, Feb. 29, which was the same day that Gardner Tweeted being in Colorado Springsfor a funeral
; we
don’t doubt that Gardner was really in Colorado Springs that day, but he would have had to hustle to make it to the airport for a long flight to Palm Beach to arrive in time for the first flute of bubbly. It’s not like Gardner just _happened_ to be in Florida at the time. See if you can spot Sen. Cory Gardner in this photo. It’s also important to note that this Palm Beach event was not a fundraiser or charitable event of any kind. This was rich people getting together to drink expensive champagne…and that’s pretty much it. So why would Gardner go through so much trouble to attend this soiree? We’re guessing it was to ply said rich people for campaign donations. Again, from _The Denver Post_:
> The Krug Champagne event was held at the mansion of two wealthy > Gardner donors, John and Amy Phelan. Both contributed the maximum > amount allowed under law to Gardner’s 2014 Senate campaign. The > Phelans are part-time Colorado residents>
> and prominent figures in the Aspen arts scene…>
> …An Instagram video>
> of the event, posted to the pianist’s account and cited in the > ethics complaint, appears to show Gardner seated near the center of > a long table, watching intently in a dark suit. A promotional photo>
> released by Krug also shows Gardner near the center of the table, > seated across from Amy Phelan and Steve Wynn, a billionaire casino > magnate and GOP mega-donor who resigned from his role with the > Republican National Committee due to sexual misconduct allegations. Headline from “Town & Country” magazine story Here’s the blurb from a March 1 “Town & Country”
article that betrays Gardner’s appearance and the absurd opulence of the event (you can also read about the party in something called“Cool Hunting
“):
> Notable guests included Steve and Andrea Wynn, Pepe and Lourdes > Fanjul, Republican COLORADO SENATOR CORY GARDNER, > Jim and Cherie Flores, Karin Luter (the evening’s co-host), Earle > and Carol Mack and Jeff Markus.>
> Of course the real stars of the night were the Champagnes on offer, > ranging from Krug Grande Cuvée 161st Edition, served with canapés > at the beginning of the evening, on the terrace overlooking the > sparkling waters of Palm Beach, to the coveted Krug Clos du Mesnil > 2004 poured at the beginning of dinner and considered by many > experts to be the best of all Champagnes. Canapés on a terrace overlooking the sparkling waters of Palm Beach, Florida. Cory Gardner is just like you! Whether or not the ethics complaint goes anywhere in this case is almost beside the point. The television ads write themselves. Just like your backyard parties, right? Posts 1 - 25 of 24,25712 3
