CIESM - THE MEDITERRANEAN SCIENCE COMMISSION The Commission is currently funded by 22 Member States which support the work of a large scientific network - some 500 institutes and over 2500 researchers - united by a commitment to promote marine science for the lasting protection of the Mediterranean Sea CIESM - THE MEDITERRANEAN SCIENCE COMMISSION Anastasia Miliou, a marine biologist, leads scientific research at the Archipelagos Institute since 2000. Her main interests cover marine mammal research and management, fisheries research and co-management, conservation of marine protected habitats, with a focus on the Aegean Sea and linking marine research with local communities and variousstakeholder groups.

The advent and spread of alien species in the Mediterranean Sea were repeatedly discussed in CIESM forums over the past three decades, and it was widely perceived that the littoral and infralittoral biota of the sea is undergoing a rapid and profound change. It is estimated that about 220,000 vessels of CIESM HISTORIC RECORDS OF MARINE FAUNA The list links to 482 marine species (belonging to nine animal phyla and two algal phyla) records.
