Benjamin was born at 25 weeks at a nearby hospital. After a few weeks, Benjamin developed medical complications that his current hospital was unable to treat and was immediately transferred to CHOC Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Here at CHOC, Benjamin was given the best gift so far in his new life: a multidisciplinary team of medical experts that could care for his fragile life. One of those team members is Erin Karavedas, MS, OTR/L, SWC, PAMs, an occupational therapist (OT) who works specifically inthe NICU.
Erin learned early on how OT could make a big impact on a child’s life. “The whole goal of an OT is to look at a patient holistically and help them work on functions so that he/she could be as independentas possible.”
This certainly translated into the care for Benjamin. Since he was born so early, his body was not prepared to interact with the world outside of the womb. It’s part of Erin’s job to help Benjamin to build foundational skills for this environment. “I’m helping him learn to exist and continue to progress developmentally,” says Erin. Some of the therapies they started with were positioning, positive touch, massage, and parent bonding. “One of the things we do is teach families how to interact with their new fragile babies, and help them become comfortable with touching and handling them so they may build a connection,” explains Erin. Benjamin has also had help with oral exploration and guidance towards oral feedings. Erin, Benjamin and his family are now working on exercises, developmental activities and, most importantly, breast and bottle feeding. All of these therapies will hopefully help get himback home.
Though Benjamin will need continued occupational and physical therapy, Erin’s hope is that Benjamin is able to be at home with his family in a natural environment where he will be able to thrive in. With the help of Erin and the rest of his NICU team, we know Benjamin will get there. #OccupationalTherapyMonth* 0
