The mission of the Childhood Obesity Foundation is to lead a societal shift toward healthy eating and active lifestyles to promote childhood healthy weights and the resulting physical and emotional benefits. LEAP BC - CHILDHOOD OBESITY FOUNDATION LEAP BC is a set of resources that promotes healthy child development and was created by 2010 Legacies Now, with support from the Province of British Columbia. LEAP BC integrates Literacy, Education, Activity and Play, and is designed for families, caregivers and early learning practitioners who engage with young children. STATISTICS - CHILDHOOD OBESITY FOUNDATION There has been a dramatic increase in unhealthy weights in Canada. Childhood overweight and obesity has been rising steadily in Canada in recent decades. Between 1978/79 and 2004, the combined prevalence of overweight and obesity among those aged two to 17 years increased from 23 per cent to 34 per cent. 2 Obesity rates doubled from 6% to 12 %. WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF CHILDHOOD OBESITY Overweight or obese children: are more likely to be teased and bullied. are more likely to bully others. may have poor self-esteem and may feel socially isolated. may be at increased risk for depression. may have poorer social skills. may have high stress and anxiety. may have behaviour and/or learning problems as a result ofpsychological

SIMPLE STEPS FAMILIES CAN TAKE 5-2-1-0 Children who drink one can of pop per day increase their risk of childhood obesity by 60%. Studies show that 30-50% of Canadian teenagers drink at least one can of pop per day. A 13 year old boy needs to jog 50 minutes per day to burn off the 260 calories contained in each 20oz (590ml) bottle of pop. IS MY CHILD A HEALTHY WEIGHT? A healthy weight is defined by a body composition that positively contributes to an individuals’ overall health, wellbeing, and quality of life over their lifespan. ABOUT - CHILDHOOD OBESITY FOUNDATION The Childhood Obesity Foundation was founded in 2004 by a pediatrician and lawyer in British Columbia who wanted to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity in Canada. Studies show that 30-50% of Canadian teenagers drink at least one can of pop per day.
