Friends of the Chicago River is the only organization solely dedicated to the Chicago River system. Since 1979, Friends has been working to improve the health of the Chicago River system for the benefit of people and wildlife and by doing so, has laid the foundation for the river to be a beautiful, continuous, easily accessible corridor of open space in the Chicago region. Located on Chicago’s South Side, Beaubien Woods is a 279-acre part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County (FPCC) with access to the Little Calumet River. It contains a myriad of ecosystems including woodlands, wetlands, prairie, pond, and river including Flatfoot Lake. Before European settlement, Beaubien Woodswas a

Volunteers have recorded 187 bird species, including more than 45 that breed at LaBagh, plus 20 mammal species, 30 species of butterflies, 22 types of dragonflies, four turtle species and two types of snakes. Volunteers have recorded 187 bird species, including more than 45 that breed at LaBagh, plus 20 mammal species, 30 species of butterflies, 22 types of dragonflies, four turtle species and two types of snakes. TUNNEL AND RESERVOIR PLAN The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), also known as "The Deep Tunnel," is the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s (MWRD) large scale engineering project designed to reduce flooding and combined sewer overflows (CSOs) within the MWRD’s service area including the Chicago River watershed in Cook County, an area that includes Chicago and dozens of other communities. STORY 4: BEAUBIEN WOODS Flatfoot Lake is a 19-acre former strip mine with a maximum depth of 15.4 feet. Surrounded by grassy groves populated with ancient oak trees, Flatfoot Lake is an accessible fishing area with a barrier free-fishing pier. It is also designated as an ice fishing lake. STORY 5: LABAGH WOODS LaBagh Woods is the home of animals found almost nowhere else in Chicago, including mink. Volunteers have recorded 187 bird species, including more than 45 that breed at LaBagh, plus 20 mammal species, 30 species of butterflies, 22 types of dragonflies, four turtle species and two types of snakes.
