RESOURCES | CENTER FOR GREEN SCHOOLS USGBC and the Center for Green Schools advocate on the federal level on behalf of healthier, greener school facilities and high-quality sustainability education for all children. This brief explains the priorities for our legislative advocacy in 2021. Opportunities for Green Schools in 2021: A Resource for States. GREEN SCHOOL BUILDINGS ARE BETTER FOR TEACHERS AND Green school buildings create an environment where students and teachers are more comfortable, less prone to illness and more focused on teaching and learning. The quality of school facilities is often overlooked as a major factor in students’ scholastic performance. However, school buildings are not only the setting for learning—they can also help or hinder the learning process. SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATION FOR THE 2021 BEST OF GREEN SCHOOLS The Center for Green Schools at USGBC is excited to partner again with Green Schools National Network to co-present the Best of Green Schools and the Green Apple awards of 2021. Although 2020 was full of unexpected setbacks and shifts in expectations, green school leaders continuously worked to advance sustainability and help their communitymembers.
GLOBAL COALITION FOR GREEN SCHOOLS The Global Coalition for Green Schools unites groups around the world working to make their schools healthy and sustainable, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn in a green school. Launched in 2013 by the Center for Green Schools and the World Green Building Council (WGBC), the Coalition brings together 27 member organizations GUIDE TO ACHIEVING ZERO ENERGY IN SCHOOLS NOW AVAILABLE The Department of Energy and a group of nonprofit organizations recently released new guidance to support school stakeholders in their pursuit of net zero energy. The Advanced Energy Design Guide for K–12 School Buildings: Achieving Zero Energy (AEDG) represents an exciting milestone in our understanding of energy efficiency, and it encourages designers and school administration officials to WEBCAST SERIES ADDRESSES MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT AIR QUALITY Making the right decisions about air quality for school staff and students is important these days, as we respond to COVID-19. How do we make those decisions when differing opinions—and sometimes, complete myths—circulate widely? To share the relevant facts, we’re offering a special webcast series for schools professionals on indoorair quality.
BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING WITH GREEN IN MIND Green school supplies are not only better for the environment, but they are also beneficial for kids’ health and well-being.
