A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR MIKE HURLEY THE ROAD TO REOPENING_May 28, 2020_
TO MY FELLOW BURNABY RESIDENTS, Since early March, in many unwelcome ways, COVID-19 has changed the way we live. Fortunately, working together, we have succeeded in flattening the COVID-19 curve sufficiently to allow for the restoration of some suspended City services and operations. Already, Burnaby citizens are again enjoying outdoor amenities such as golf courses, tennis courts, sports fields, skate parks and bike parks. The City was able to open these amenities first, because they are located outdoors in open spaces that allow for the critical physical distancing recommended by public health authorities. At the same time, I am so pleased to see that many of our City’s businesses are starting to carefully reopen or expanding suspended services. I know that we all look forward to resuming many of our familiar routines with the Burnaby businesses we’ve been missing. In the coming days and weeks – guided by the City’s RecoveryFramework
,
with safety at its core – we plan to reopen more City facilities in a way that is both safe and consistent with provincial orders, directives and guidelines. In June, we will launch the Enhanced Opening phase of our plan. This will include increased access to Burnaby Public Library services through a new curbside pickup program and limited home delivery. Playgrounds at parks and school sites, as well as outdoor fitness circuits for all ages, will be re-opened in phases in the coming weeks. For the purpose of property tax payments, limited access to City Hall will increase. In addition, select committees, commissions and the Board of Variance will again begin meeting, in consideration of physical distancing guidelines. We are grateful that the efforts of Burnaby citizens have enabled the City to begin to reopen facilities and reinstate services. Your continued focus on social distancing will help to ensure we can continue on this path. Meanwhile, thank you to all Burnaby citizens for the many contributions you have made and continue to make to flattening thecurve.
Sincerely,
Mayor Mike Hurley
