Since student arrival just over three weeks ago, circumstances on campus have been unpredictable and volatile, with an average of 20 new positive cases reported each day. Almost 70 percent of mammals are nocturnal, which means they must know something we don’t. HOW WILL THE MINIMUM WAGE DEBATE AFFECT THE UNIVERSITY Although the recent attempt to raise the federal minimum wage through the COVID-19 relief bill failed, a large following of citizens and politicians alike still support the idea. Whether it’s raised to $10 or $15 an hour, any increase would affect the number of students in their on-campus jobs. In a recent article published by the Wall Street Journal, Walmart announced that 425,000 of their employees will receive a significant raise in their wages. According to Walmart, the coronavirus has boosted business demand for workers who engage in online orders,prompting
UNIVERSITY CHAPTER OF KAPPA DELTA RHO SUSPENDED AFTER Last November, the Iota Chapter of Kappa Delta Rho (KDR) fraternity was terminated from the University on grounds of hazing, after having been previously reinstated nine years ago. This suspension comes two months after a federal lawsuit by former student John Jean accused multiple defendants — including the University, the local and national chapters of TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS Trans rights are human rights. The Sunshine State has become a very dark place for trans rights. On April 14, the Florida state House of Representatives added its contribution to a wave of discriminatory legislation that has swept the nation as of late, passing a bill banning transgender athletes from women’s sports. REFLECTING AND CELEBRATING THE UNIVERSITY’S 175 YEARS Feb. 5 marked the 175th anniversary of the University’s founding in 1846, sparking a number of celebratory acknowledgements and reflections. University President John Bravman emailed all students announcing the start of a year-long commemoration of the school’s founding. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the University was unable to host any in-person celebration or gatherings on THE UNIVERSITY'S MOVEMENT TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY The University is taking on the long term responsibility of working towards sustainability in many different ways.
