The Founding of the Museum. Following British Aerospace’s announcement that they were going to sell off the most historic 40 acres of the original Brooklands Motor Racing Circuit, a 99-year Lease was entered into by Elmbridge Borough Council and Gallaher Ltd in 1984 for 30 of the 40 acres of the site, for the purpose of founding a museum at Brooklands. BROOKLANDS MUSEUM :: RACE TRACK Race Track. Originally constructed in 1907, the Brooklands race track was the 'Ascot of Motorsport' in its heyday. The outer circuit was 2 ¾ miles long, 100ft wide, with two long straights joined by two sections of the banked curve up to 30ft high. Today only sections of the race track survive. At the Museum, visitors can walk on the lowest BROOKLANDS MUSEUM :: VICKERS VIMY Vickers FB27 VIMY Replica ‘NX71MY' 1994, Vimy Pavilion, On long term display. The Vickers Vimy was designed as a long-range bomber capable of delivering a one ton payload to central Germany. BROOKLANDS MUSEUM :: ALVIS FRONT WHEEL DRIVE Alvis Front Wheel Drive 1928, Campbell Shed, On long term display. Commander J.B. Rooper of the Royal Navy took delivery of this car in 1928. It had been intended for the 1928 Tourist Trophy Team, but it was not completed in time for the race. BROOKLANDS MUSEUM :: BROUGH SUPERIOR 1000CC ‘WORKS SCRAPPER’ 1927, ERA Shed, On long term display. This motorcycle was built by Freddie Dixon and the Brough Superior Works to be used in an attempt to take the ‘World’s Fastest’ title. The bike was a heavily modified SS100 1000cc machine and was used extensively by Dixon in 1927. He took the record for the first bike with a sidecar to lapBrooklands
