COUNTER-DEPENDENCE
Counter-Dependence. Most people are familiar with the term “co-dependency”. Co-dependency often presents as a caring individual supporting another individual to a detriment to both themselves and the person that they are trying to “help”. BIOGRAPHY - BLACK SHEEP COUNSELLING Biography - Black Sheep Counselling. Why “Black Sheep”? Often in life we fall victim to dominant societal narratives. I have long been viewed as a black sheep. We have been led to believe that labels such as “black sheep”, “geek”, “weirdo” etc. have negative connotations.I disagree. What makes us different, makes us beautiful. THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY The Importance of Play . Play may seem like “kid stuff”, but it is paramount to our well-being. Research by Dr. Stuart Brown found a strong correlation between success and playful activity (interestingly, Dr. Brown’s previous research on murderers illuminated that a lack of play in childhood was a common characteristic in killers’ backgroundsit seems all work and no playcan make
THE MYTH OF CATHARSIS The Myth of Catharsis. The term catharsis comes from the Ancient Greek word katharsis, which means purification/cleansing through the purging of emotions or the relieving of emotional tensions. The grandfather of psychology, Sigmund Freud revived the concept of catharsis. Reframing Anger. Many of us have been led to believe that anger is a bad thing; a “sin”, even. Instead of viewing anger as a bad thing, it is helpful to recognize that anger is an intense reaction to an unmet need (think: a need for validation, a need to be understood, a need to have boundaries respected, a need for clarity, a need to move away from the feeling of overwhelm, et cetera). THE IMPORTANCE OF EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION The Importance of Emotional Expression. Culturally and societally there is a penchant towards valuing stoicism over emotional expression. I grew up in a British household where having a “stiff upper lip” and self discipline were embodied beliefs and values. This never sat well with me, and it turns out, denying our full emotional expression JUST LIKE THE MOON, WE ALL GO THROUGH PHASES Just like the moon, we all go through phases. We all make mistakes in life, but that doesn’t mean we have to pay for them the rest of their life. Bad choices do not equate to us being bad people. I find there is a common struggle present with many of my adult clients, and it centres around shame and regret for past choices. THE LAMPS ARE DIFFERENT BUT THE LIGHT’S THE SAME When we can recognize our common humanity, we remember than feelings of failure, exclusion, betrayal, inadequacy, and disappointment are universally painful experiences. Suffering is a part of living. When we are suffering, we often feel alone in our suffering. The pain I feel in difficult times is the same pain that you feel in difficulttimes.
AFFAIRS IN THE DIGITAL AGE: DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS Perel asserts that death and mortality live in the shadow of an affair – an affair can feel like an antidote to death (“beating back the deadness”) Historically, marriage was an economic enterprise and infidelity threatened financial security. Now that marriage is a romantic arrangement, infidelity threatens emotional security.
