CAN EVERYBODY BE HYPNOTIZED?toastclear
A friend recently told me that he couldn’t be hypnotized and that about 15% of all people are not suggestible. I thought this to be bullshit and googled. And now I wonder… There are are articles from sites like dailymail that even claim this to be 25% and there are sites that say that litterally everybody without any special mental illness can be hypnotized. I hope somebody on here canclarify :)

Diving in on this to tell a little story. Years ago, back when I was a mere slip of a girl making my way around the murky streets of England picking pockets and sweeping chimneys. I came across an advert requesting participants for a study. So me being the poor broke student I was at the time, signed up as studies were often pretty easy money. The study in question was on hypnosis and I had been hypnotized several times already at this point so I was pretty okay with it. So I was sat in what was basically a hospital room with medical equipment still out and a man came in and read an induction from a clipboard. It was the basic progressive relaxation induction and there have been ice ages that lasted for less time than that induction. The guy’s voice sounded like he wanted to be literally anywhere else than in that room at that moment. I dropped a little early on, but after about 10 minutes of moving up my legs muscle by muscle my head wandered to other things, like what was that medical equipment next to me? After about 20 minutes my brain was utterly elsewhere, I was mentally running through my chores for the day and plotting out a paper in my head. After what was about 45 minutes the man put the clipboard down onto his lap and did the balloon and weight suggestibility test. His voice was still totally uninterested and his eyes had that look of a man who just wanted to go home and go to bed. Of course, the test did nothing, I was more awake than when we started the induction due to getting myself pumped for doing the paper. So, the man looked at the other page on the clipboard and marked me asun-hypnotizable.
That is the problem with a lot of studies. They take one situation of one location, one hypnotist, one induction and use that to try and put people into a box. Often it wasn’t that the person can’t be hypnotized as much as the person can’t be hypnotized with one of those factors as it was. Change the hypnotist, the location or the induction and you might get a totally different result. Sometimes it is just a case of the subject having a bad day or being preoccupied with something else. This also comes down to the issue of how do we even test hypnosis. There are so many variables and the experience of hypnosis can be so personal making a test that accounts and covers all of them is reallydifficult.
Also some of this comes from how hypnosis is reported, often popular news articles will report the numbers of the study without giving any of the analysis the study gave. So I have often seen a small study which actually ended with “25% of our group did not experience significant phenomena from X” as “25% of people can’t be hypnotized.” There is also the issue of wording as someone who isn’t suggestible could still be hypnotized (though I would postulate it would be harder to elicit phenomena from them). However, in a lot of reporting words like “suggestible” are used as if they were a synonym for hypnotized. This is especially true with more, letssay sensationalist
,
sources like the Daily Mail and other magazines and newspapers whose audience isn’t likely to be familiar with the jargon of psychology and hypnosis. In conclusion, the debate and research into the question of “Can everyone be hypnotized” is going to continue for years to come and likely won’t be fully settled until we decide on the boundaries for what constitutes hypnosis. However, I hope that all of this helped you understand why there is so much variance between the quoted numbers and answers study to study and report to report.binaural-histolog

Actually that is very true. Some where of the area of 25% of the world’s population can’t be hypnotized.binaural-histolog
It’s true and it’s not true. It’s complicated. Generally, the studies done on “suggestability” used various suggestions as “scales” and said that if you didn’t follow any of the suggestions, you were not hypnotized. They were also given standardized scripts to follow, and the people reading from those scripts were not experienced hypnotists. Typically they were gradstudents.
Meanwhile, clinical studies also showed that some hypnotists have much higher success rates than others: in other words, the problem is not in the subjects, but in the hypnotists. The habit of clinical psychology studies to keep everything standardized and vary the students means an easier study, but also means that people get “washed out” by the process. I think @hypnoticharlequin went to one of these studies, and what it comes down to is the worst case hypnotic scenario: a bored grad student reading a PMR from a script, with a minimal pre-talk, to an unmotivated subject. I did talk about this a bit in Alternative History of Hypnotism,
but I’ll see if I can track down various studies. One of the advances in hypnotism that Erickson made was recognizing that different people need different approaches, and while he’s remembered for permissive language, Erickson’s success came from choosing a technique that would best fit the person. For people who were very deferential, he was authoritarian. For people with control issues, he was permissive. For people who were easily distracted and twitchy, he would lean into that and switch their attention from one thing to the next very rapidly. For people were “analytical” he would use kinaesthetic confusion. Graham Old has a great book on this called Hypnosis with the Hard to Hypnotisethat
breaks down how to personalize an approach. So are there people who can’t be hypnotized? Yes, but fewer than you may think. People who are unable to focus at all or engage in a dialogue with the hypnotists are typically incapable. This could be a transient problem (drunk or drugged) or permanent, such as dementia, severe autism, traumatic brain injury. Outside of that, I think the ability to be hypnotized is like the ability to meditate: while some people are naturally gifted, if you can focus your mind and establish a practice, you can develop different mental states.writtenbynath
Research into hypnosis found that 25% of the people participating in the research did not experience hypnotic trance. This does not translate to the general population. The research uses a standardised induction, which may not work for everyone, because people have different needs and different tastes. Most hypnotherapists find that they can successfully hypnotise 100% of their clients. This also doesn’t translate to the general population, but it does show that a personalised approach has a higher success rate. Otherwise, see above.binaural-histolog
@hypnoticharlequin found it! It is Can Everyone Be Hypnotized.

12 DAYS OF GIRLY JUICE 2019: 2 FEARS DEFEATED Every December here, I chronicle 2 major fears I’ve – to some extent – conquered within the past year. (Read previous years’ fears: 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018.) This year I have one kinky o… When my beau and I first met and began discussing their hypnosis kink,
I think I told them pretty early on that I had no intention of learning how to hypnotize people. On December 19th of last year, however, we did our first trance scene with me topping. A large
part of my aversion to hypno-topping came from the misconception that you have to say the exact right words in the exact right order to make it happen but a year of being regularly hypnotized by a skilful person had taught me that the process is looser and more improvisational than I’d thought.Jan 4th, 2020

faculty.fuqua.duke.edu THE UNBEARABLE AUTOMATICITY OF BEING What was noted by E. J. Langer (1978) remains true today: that much of contemporary psychological research is based on the assumption that people are consciously and systematically processing incoming information in order to construe and interpret their world and to plan and engage in courses of action. As did Langer, the authors question this assumption. First, they review evidence that the ability to exercise such conscious, intentional control is actually quite limited, so that most of moment-to-moment psychological life must occur through nonconscious means if it is to occur at all. The authors then describe the different possible mechanisms that produce automatic, environmental control over these various phenomena and review evidence establishing both the existence of these mechanisms as well as their consequences for judgments, emotions, and behavior. Three major forms of automatic self-regulation are identified: an automatic effect of perception on action, automatic goal pursuit, and a continual automatic evaluation of one's experience. From the accumulating evidence, the authors conclude that these various nonconscious mental systems perform the lion's share of the self-regulatory burden, beneficently keeping the individual grounded in his or her current environment. CONSENSUAL HYPNOFICS ARCHIVEHi everyone!
So there was a post a few weeks ago decrying the lack of consensual hypnosis fic on the internet- to the point where some people stated they had barely seen any. This hasn’t been my experience, but I realize I’ve also been on the Tumblrs for a while and have had a good chance to curate my friends list so my percentages are probably off. Most people probably AREN’T seeing all of the quality consensual hypnofic that’s out there. To solve this (and to help people who are into consensual fic find more of what they like) I’ve started a new archive blog: @consensualhypnofics . I’ve currently got a queue set up so that blog will be posting 2 stories a day starting January 1. I’m excited to say that I already have enough stories for the month of January and am working on February. Please give that Tumblr a follow if consensual fics are your jam- and re-reblog any of the stories you like. The best way to increase the percentage of these fics that people are seeing is to reblog the stories you like to share with others. :) I would also really love it if you would share either your consensual fics or the consensual fics that you love from others with me so I can reblog them. You can either tag @consensualhypnofics or send that account an ask/DM. I’m realizing I’m reblogging a lot of the same authors over and over so would really love some variety. I’d also appreciate links to Mcstories since a lot of authors post primarily there and I don’t generally read it. (I know @spiralturquoise , for example, has a lot of high quality consensual hypnofic that’s mostly on the Mcstories website.) Stories do not necessarily have to be well-negotiated or best kink practices (although these are certainly welcomed and encouraged!) They don’t have to be floofy. I’ll take clear CONSENSUAL non-consent or strongly implied consent. I AM going to try and tag good, clear negotiation when I see it so am especially happy to reblog examples of this. To help me (since this is a lot of stories to read, y'all) please include this information in your message to the blog or in your tags (like #negotiation or #good consent practices) and I’ll move these fics to the front of the reblogging line. I’m tagging a few people who may be interested below, but would really appreciate a reblog from anyone who wants to spread the newsabout this.
The Tumblr is @consensualhypnofics - please follow and send mestories. Thanks!

A CALL FOR NEGOTIATION IN EROTIC FICTION (HYPNOSIS OR OTHERWISE) I’ve spoken with a good number of people who have been in kink and hypnosis for 20+ years and the consensus seems to be that widespread Consent and Negotiation are a fairly new thing. Like past 10 years orso.
Consent has taken a front seat in a lot of the Cons I’ve gone to, especially with things like “The Consent Team”. There’s even a new phrase I’ve been seeing “Negotiation ishot”.
AND YET EROTIC FICTION HAS NOT BEEN KEEPING UP. I’M RARELY SEEINGIT.
In fact, I don’t read most Hypnosis/BDSM Fiction because it always makes me feel uncomfortable. That may be weird but, being a librarian, I often put myself in stories I read and to read someone not even asking Consent… I bought a book full of FemDom short stories back in February. The first one opens with a FemDom watching a boy dance at a vanilla club, goes behind him, grabs his waist, slips her hands into his pants, jacks his penis a few times, tells him she’s bringing him home and, on the way, orders him to call her Ma’am. I stopped reading 3 pages in. I glanced through to the end of chapter. She used a safeword… however ordered what safeword he’d say, rather than asking him for one. No other negotiations. If a friend told me this happened to him, I would call it a consentviolation.
Now, this wasn’t Hypnosis Fiction, it was a published book on BDSM. However, I’ve also attempted to read a good number of stories on MCStories. Same thing. Little to no consent. And I cannot continuereading.
Same thing with Erotic Fantasies posted here, on Tumblr. Fifty Shades of Gray is a great example of Erotic Fiction with terrible consent practices. New people are finding Hypnotic and BDSM fiction every day. They are reading these pieces of fiction, and thinking THAT’S HOW THINGSWORK.
They are reading things like the above or “he took my mind and I was helpless to stop him”. They think it’s hot. They want to play. They find someone they find attractive and immediately attempt to play and are told “You can’t do that. You didn’t ask consent.” What? Consent? Of all the Erotic Fiction they’ve been reading for the past 6 months none of them mention consent. The Dom/me just takes what submissive they want and that’s it. Or, if they are submissive, and a predator Dom wants to play without consent. That’s the norm. That‘s how it’s supposed to work. They don’t know anything different. In the majority of current Erotic Fiction being written, shared and consumed, it’s the same old “I want. I take.”. Which we are teaching new people is not _only_ okay, it’s expected, it’s what submissives/Doms want. And even for people writing Erotic Fiction for other kinksters, without the mention of Negotiation and Consent, they can be reinforcing not only bad consent policies, but also unhealthydynamics.
Now, going way back up to my example of “he took my mind and I was helpless to stop him”. If that same sentence was altered slightly “once we finished negotiations, he took my mind and I was helpless to stop him”. Or even a less direct route, “I knew he would take my mind, I had even told him how, however I didn’t know when.” That shows new people that some Consent/Negotiation was done, without “ruining” the control aspect. Although, if Negotiation is indeed hot*, then it shouldn’t ruin your Erotic Fiction but add to it. Yes, there are a good number of people who enjoy the fantasy of losing control. And you can have that loss of control, and still mention a single line of consent. Or even add in a bit of memory play. Which in itself can be extremelyhot.
If we, as content creators, start to add Negotiation and Consent, EVEN AS A SINGLE LINE, INTO OUR EROTIC FANTASIES, then Negotiation will not only become the norm for new people, they may also start to find it as erotic and arousing as the scene that follows. EROTIC FICTION CONTENT CREATORS, I ASK YOU TO START INCLUDING NEGOTIATIONS AND CONSENT IN YOUR EROTIC FICTION. Start making them both normal and erotic. We are going into not only a new year, but a new decade. Let’s fill this new decade with examples of good, hot Negotiation and Consent practices.Thank you,
~Sweet
*I am one of the people who finds Negotiation hot. Every single one of my pieces of erotic fiction/erotic non-fiction includes at least a single line of direct, or indirect, consent. the-not-so-hidden-debug-mode omg i have the same problem!!! i wish more authors would write negotiations into their stories!! i used to find nonconsensual erotic hypnosis or domination or sexual acts super hot, but then i got really interested in ethics and i started thinking about the implications of that stuff, and the unsexy consequences, etc, and…look, suffice it to say, i’m a hypnokinkster, but i’m also a political science major and a leftist, which means i think a _lot_ about justice and righteousness and the potential consequences of one’s actions. even during sexy times. so yeah…dominance is fun, and dominance using hypnosis is Freakin Amazing, but! only after negotiating!! otherwiseit can get dicey.
you know what?
i think i might make a masterpost of all the hypnokink stories that feature proper negotiations. HEY READERS! IF YOU KNOW OF ANY STORIES THAT FEATURE PROPER NEGOTIATION, PLEASE REBLOG AND ADD A LINK TO SAID STORIES! AND OF COURSE, I WILL READ THROUGH ALL OF THEM. JUST TO MAKE SURE THEY ALL HAVE REAL NEGOTIATION SCENES. DEFINITELY NOT FOR ANY OTHER REASON. OH YEAH, AND BONUS POINTS IF THE DYNAMIC BETWEEN THE CHARACTERSINVOLVED IS CUTE!
(oh and: _bonus_ bonus points if you find a story i haven’t read yet. also, bonus bonus _bonus_ points if you find an _author_ that i’ve never heard of whose stories all include negotiations. and before we get started, disclaimer: i have read all of @hypnoobiwan ’s stories, most of @arihi ’s stories, and a fair amount of @sex-obsessed-lesbian’s stories.)
ready? ok. now…

I may be making a mistake by responding to this, but here I go! First off, thanks for tagging me - I do tend to write towards softer stories, and a lot of my stories in that vein are tagged with the #softcoresleepy tag, courtesy of a hypnokinkster. I understand where you are coming from, and often some of my favorite stories are the ones where I am touched by the realistic depictions of kink and relationships, or ones that are soft and sweet. But. I take issue with the idea that we are what we consume, or that depictions of bad actions in fiction are bad because it inherently endorses or otherwise teaches the concept. I do believe that generally, people are capable of seeing the difference between fiction and reality, and know that not everything written is necessarily a guidebook for real life interactions. Those that don’t? That’s, to me, not on media to sanitize itself. This is the same argument I see in violent video game debates. This is a similar argument that people used to denounce ‘sinful content’ like porn. It feels inherently militant to nudge towards wanting to police expression in content, even if it IS towards consent, you know? I understand that some stories can be uncomfortable without it and that some people prefer it, but I am bothered by the fact that it is presented that our content TEACHES bad behaviors. Fiction is allowed to have bad people and bad takes. Even further, because this is kink specifically, it touches too close to judging what others choose to read, or what others might choose to write. I also think a lot, about justice and righteousness. I consider myself to be a pretty thoughtful and moral person, all things considered. I don’t think that I’m any less that because of what I write. Or read. I don’t hold media up to a specific standard in which it must be moral in all ways because I’m cognizant of the fact fiction can present something without inherently endorsing it, and personally see the benefits in fiction being able to do this, present topics that have issues and are problematic, and see how it goes about incorporating it into the story. Furthermore, again, because it’s kink, I doubly do not hold what people want to write or read or fantasize about to any moral standard. Fantasy lets us explore topics in a safe environment separate from reality and while I _do not disagree_ with seeing the hypocrisy in people talking about negotiation but not seeing any of it in the content we create, I also do not feel like this is the answer specifically. I write this as somebody who was tagged because of her many stories involving negotiation and consent! I write this as somebody who has favorite stories that show and depict this well. I write this as someone who kind of tends towards writing that a lot of the time, anyway. But I also write this as a content creator who understands that not all content has to be created towards my fashion. As someone who’s had people enjoy her realistic negotiation stories. But as someone who’s had people give her shit for some stories because it was ‘too dark’ for them and it didn’t fit their ‘image’ of me. As someone who’s been dissuaded more than once from posting stories on here because I don’t feel like dealing with more of that. I DO find negotiation hot. My partner whispering things that were on the table into my ear and waiting for my quivering response to each one. Accepting my yes’s and no’s. Teasing me for all those _wicked _things I had just agreed to, and reassuring me about the ones I didn’t want that evening. And that’s why so many of my stories feature that! But not all of them do, and I don’t feel like all ofthem HAVE to.
I respect the both of y’all. I _do _think more work could definitely feature consent. I don’t think there needs to start being a higher standard of duty and responsibility to.Source: sweettist
