Short periods of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are often used to treat vasomotor symptoms around the time of the menopause, but long-term adherence to therapy is low. DIAGNOSTIC TESTING FOR LYME DISEASE: BEWARE OF FALSE Lyme disease is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted mainly via the tick vector Ixodes pacificus in British Columbia. Polymerase chain reaction testing finds Borrelia burgdorferi in only 1 in 200 ticks, whether they are collected from the wild or submitted by patients. This frequency is fiftyfold lower than in high-incidence areas of North America. RE: THE GENDER PAY GAP IN MEDICINE (2) I appreciate Dr Sin’s call to action in her April editorial : “Ultimately, the question we should each be asking ourselves is not whether a gender pay gap exists in medicine, but what can I do to help close it?” And I urge our professional representative body (Doctors of BC) and our main payer (BC Ministry of Health) to (1) engage experts to do a review of processes and RE: MANAGING VULNERABLE PATIENTS I was interested to read the April 2021 article, “Management of vulnerable adult patients seeking to leave hospital: Understanding and using relevant legislation,” having had just such a conundrum during my shift the previous evening.
